The problem with starting Sullivan earlier is that he did not get to Iowa until June. I believe he went through spring ball at Northwestern. Lester started at Iowa in February. Cade was able to study his new offense Lester brought to Iowa, long before Sullivan got there.
I have no problem with Cade getting time at quarterback. My problem is with the coaching staff not replacing him when he is struggling. Running back fumbles--out. DB gets torched--out. Lineman misses blocks--out. On an on and on. The reason why Sullivan did so well THIS game is because our line is struggling again. Sullivan mobility gives the play a chance. However, the young man does need to show more with his arm. Added with edit: the good news for Hawkeye fans, once Cade graduates, every Hawkeye QB is considered mobile.
IMO, Kirk views the QB in an old school and NFL line of thinking. I believe he views the QB position as a face of the program, extension of the coaching staff and almost always a team captain, so the leash is longer. Unfortunately we haven’t seen a QB take advantage of the many chances Kirk has given them
Two reasons this hasn't happened earlier, Coach Ferentz is a little too stubborn to admit this mistake (seems to only be with the QB position) and the second reason is he values loyalty maybe as the #1 characteristic of a player and he's to loyal to his QB choices. Having said that, for the future of the team it only makes sense to play Sullivan and Lainez going forward as they will be here next year & Cade won't as he's out of eligibility and he will not be drafted or play in the NFL. This should be an easy decision for someone with Kirk's experience, if not for his loyalty to his QB choices.
Erica is spot on!! Bench Cade , in fact Cade give your NIL money back cause you didn't prove yourself one bit. The only reason you were successful at Michigan was your surrounded talent on the line. You have no down field vision you cant run and you have a weak arm . Can't believe Iowa bought into you and you were supposed to be a God's send? Give me a break
Indiana, a basketball school is doing better with a new coach than long time kirk. While Iowa is phenomenal at developing, Kirk's coaching and talent evaluation is outdated.
Indiana hasn’t played anyone with a pulse 😂😂 they are having one of those seasons Iowa would get every 5 years or so cupcake schedule. Only beat Washington by 14 Iowa beat them by 26 or 24. Wait til they play someone
Sullivan was on the roster all year and we're going on week 9. Sullivan was a transfer QB and was benched. That's coaching. Sullivan was always better.
Sully in her opinion might not be an NFL caliber QB, but she should add the word “yet”. Give him time and give him situations and by the end of next year you just might see him get drafted
I think if Cade had not had that season ending injury, he would have been better. If you remember he was injured when he took off on a scramble. I don't know if that is still in his head, but it could be. If so he is ruined as QB. I've wondered that about Luke too. It is a sport player problem across the gambit. Every sport that has a danger of injury that is. How will the player respond is always in question after a bad injury. I think Luke will be fine just as Eric All was fine but Cade, maybe not. Remember it happened to him twice, so we need to acknowledge that and not judge him too hard but the bench is where he belongs now and Sully is our future.
It is true that the leash has consistently been too long for Iowa's QBs and Kirk needs a wake up call for that. It is especially hilarious that Kirk has repeatedly admitted to not being a good judge of the QB position. Then hire/defer to someone who is a QB expert! LOL. However, with all of this being said, it is also true that the QB in general does deserve a much longer leash than every other position. It is different than other positions and it is a stupid argument that these podcasters make to compare them to other positions.
What is your point in this comment? It's not cherry picking to look at the history of a coach and his QB changes. Some QB changes are done because of injuries. Cade has been injured. He's not what he was in 2021 and he doesn't have the same supporting cast /team he had before he transferred to Iowa years ago. Times change and players are capable or regressing the same way players are also able to develop. Cade has a ceiling that Sullivan can and has passed for a while. The examples she gave are relevant to the recent Iowa QB change in regards to forming a pattern on Kirk's decision making. If you feel like she's cherry picking then give your own examples/comparisons and we can have a discussion about them too.
Temper tantrum logic! The logical, patient, methodical process that is KF errors on giving a guy a chance to improve vs canning someone the first time they make an error. Sorry, but I’m taking KF all day! Temper tantrums are illogical and lack logical reasoning. MSU game was on the defense. MSU never punted! REPEAT, MSU NEVER PUNTED. KF considered going to Sully but in the 2nd half Cade led Iowa down the field and the offense was moving the ball.
MSU game was lost by the defense as MSU never punted. Repeat. MSU NEVER PUNTED IN THAT GAME. That’s not a CADE problem. KF pulled the plug after giving Cade a chance to redeem himself as KF is loyal and believes in his personal. KF doesn’t quit believing in his guys. That is a sign of a good person. Good people are getting more and more rare in the scapegoat world we live in.
You can point out where the game is lost at, but if you're not putting out your best players then you're handicapping yourself. Football is a complimentary sport and that Iowa defense has been expected by Kirk to win every single game, week after week, year after year because the offense has been that bad. There's such thing as mental and physical fatigue. Also the QB is the leader of the team. This QB change is an admission of lack of leadership at both the QB level and coaching level. Had Sullivan started week 1 and beat Iowa State, or kept drives going longer than Cade, there would be more confidence and leadership not just on the field but also accountability on the sidelines and practice. Defenses are going to struggle in this age of football. Look at the 42-41 game Georgia had in the playoffs. That was an amazing defense and they gave up 40+ points yet still won. That georgia team had leadership at the QB position and didn't go to the, "the defense struggled" excuse which would have been easy when they were down 2 touchdowns. Georgia isn't known for their offense yet scored 42. No matter where you want to put the blame go ahead, but at least make the coach play the best players. Saban made a QB change in the championship to win the natty. Some QB changes are more obvious than others and this Sullivan change was obvious before the season began to everyone but Kirk.
cool? kirk being “such a good guy. such good character” isn’t what he gets paid for. he gets paid to win games period. kirk being a nice guy ended their season. scapegoat ? dude get over it. kirk is not this holy, mystical football god who shall not be criticized, you and the rest of his ball washers think he is. You all have an excuse for everything as to how nothing is Kirk’s fault, and everyone who criticizes kirk are fake fair weather fans. or we should go root for nebraska or iowa state, or my favorite “ So what college were you the head coach of ? how many championships do you have?!” as many as Kirk. ZERO. Kirk’s archaic offensive mindset DOES NOT WORK WHEN PLAYING AGAINST GOOD PROGRAMS. He’s pissed away elite defenses multiple seasons in a row due to fielding the literal worst quarterbacks and offenses in the country. Nick saban benched his starting quarterback who had NEVER LOST A SINGLE GAME as the starting qb for Alabama during the middle of a national championship and put in a TRUE FRESHMAN in the biggest game on the biggest stage in all of college athletics, and guess what.. they came back and won. why? because nick saban understands that he’s paid to fkn win games and that’s it! enough with the excuses for kirk and telling us all about his character and being a nice guy. fk that who cares.. none of that shit matters at all especially when you lose games against inferior teams in humiliating fashion that cost you the entire season.

Not to mention all of the NIL $$$ invested into Cade. I've heard it was a million dollar deal to get him to Iowa. If you have million invested in your qb, he was injured all last year (basically), started slow this year- the knee jerk reaction is to yank Cade..... Well folks.......if they yank Cade prior to when Sully is ready-forcing Sully to play and whatnot he folds? What if he wasn't ready and he crumbled? Throw Cade back in? Sure. What happens if the injury prone Cade, gets smoked 3downs after being put back in? Put Sully back in? How do you think that would go? I'll tell you.......we'd have a bigger mess than we do now. But still won't hold a candle to the shit show that will transpire when KF retires.
"vs canning someone the first time they make an error." Cade has been around for years. We know what he is. Nobody has been waiting on anything other than for dissapointment from cade. We're not talking about waiting for Cade to make an error say week 1 or week 3. It was obvious by their past performances who was better simply overall. That's basic QB evaluation. You trust Kirk's ability to evaluate the QB position? If you listened to the caller, the caller also gave past examples where kirk flubbed up not just now. You don't have to point out errors to say one person is simply better at a job than someone else. People wanted Sullivan to start way before the season began. Stop making up boogeymen/strawmen in your head.
Kirks track record with QB is trash we need to move on from Kirk he couldn't even admit he was wrong when Sullivan had a good game he gave the credit to the defense when fans have called for Sullivan since the ISU game this year he hasn't listened
2:47 FACTS!
Erica is making America great again 😉
The problem with starting Sullivan earlier is that he did not get to Iowa until June. I believe he went through spring ball at Northwestern. Lester started at Iowa in February. Cade was able to study his new offense Lester brought to Iowa, long before Sullivan got there.
Who thinks kirk has lost his touch to feel for the game? Time for him to step down

@@skylermummert24good thing Iowa lost to a cupcake last week...the thing about cupcakes is that you still have to beat them.

Right choice too late. The MSU game was already played. That loss is on Kirk.

Cherry picking past QB changes? You wanna go there? Look at QB changes anywhere else! Those were all bad decisions then right?
