I think they were all nervous. The rest of the group are looking at her in the beginning for their cue to start. Luckily they knew right away when to come in and rescue Diana and get the performance back on track. Whatever fighting went on behind the scenes, on this occasion you can see the teamwork taking place.
When she sang this song on the TCB special , OMG! Her voice had matured , and she was totally giving it 1000 percent . I get goose bumps! She is simply the grestest.
Diana Ross & The Supremes were Motown's top act -- and with good reason. Not only were the girls extremely glamorous and highly talented, Diana was the star of the show. She has more stage presence than any artist I've ever seen. Diana Ross' performances commanded attention, and, thank Heaven, she still does today! It was always fun to watch Mary & Flo (and, later, Mary & Cindy) performing in the background, but my eyes were constantly returning to Diana for fear of missing a single beat of her emotion-laden performance. I'm proud to say that, to this day, her fans are a loyal bunch -- yes, we are -- and we always will be. Diana Ross shall always remain the reigning Queen Of Motown!
Diana Ross is one of my all-time favorite female vocalists. Few could do justice to those Supremes songs like her. Then of course her solo hits like Ain't No Mountain, Remember Me, Touch Me In The Morning, Theme From Mahogany, It's My Turn etc.
The Supremes were the loves of my life ! Diana could do no wrong. "Come See About Me" was so emotional. One hit after another: I was just a kid so I couldn't keep up with buying the hits but I made a way. God bless Diana. If anything ever happened to her , they're gonna have to put me away too !
@Daxmusic I have never heard someone express their love for this woman the way you did, I thought I was the only one that paid attention to all of those things. I fell in love with her when I was 5yrs old and I saw Mahogany in 75 I love her so much that I remember the exact moment when I fell in love with her, it was during the mahogany montage and ever since her voice her face her movements her phrasing all of it has mesmerized me to the point of nervousness when she's about to perform ad if it was me about to perform and no one else can even match that to me. She is the love of my life.
Thank you very much! I simply do not understand how anyone cannot be in love with Diana Ross! I will definitely react to her theme from mahogany, which is one of my all-time favorites. Just the way it starts out simply melts me: “do you know where you’re going to ...”
It was noted that doing this performance I hear a symphony was just put out on the streets a week ago this is the first time that they had it this song Diana had forgotten the first part of the song since it was just coming out the first week as you can tell Diana looks and search for the lyrics that she catches up
The hesitation - what you say is nervousness- that DR shows, as you pointed out, is not because she’s nervous. It’s because the orchestration is completely different from the Motown studio recording. And she wasn’t enough of a professional stage performer to be able to handle it as the great singers and vocalists could do. The beginning of the song is strange it’s even strange to us who know the song so well and it’s understandable that DR got lost for a moment.
Flo and Mary just did there thing and kept on singing the “baby, baby. Diana was totally lost but she finally remembered the lyrics and finished strong with Flo bringing it home with that last note ❤️.
Musician, producer, music executive L.A. Reid released his memoir a few years ago. In it he admits that his entire career has been spent looking for the next Diana Ross. He has worked with some amazing talent but Diana is one of a kind, so I don't think he'll ever be successful in his quest.
Diana got into her Grove after she sang pulling me closer, and she closed her eyes she got comfortable got into her grove . But even from the start she carried herself well even while she nervous in the beginning. I believe in reading about that performance things in the background were going crazy and they were late and pushed out there with the music already going. They had to step in place and keep it moving and that is why she may have been nervous and why she missed the first few lines , they had just gotten to the mikes and they had to pull it off as if they were steady standing there. And inspite of all that Diana and Mary and Florence still pulled it off .yes they did ..

Do you have the performance info on this clip”? This is my favorite performance of Symphony, and I used to play it on UA-cam all the time, however, I can’t seem to find it any more. Also, you’re absolutely right about Diana, she made you feel her lyrics. The group was such a call act!
Interesting video and commentary....however you have to be half deaf to not comment on that big beautiful soprano voice booming out behind Miss Ross. There are two noteworthy aspects to this performance: Diana's flubbing of the song throughout AND the powerhouse performance of Florence Ballard.
If memory serves, this may have been the performance that followed an argument backstage between Diana and Mary (who seems to be zeroed in on Diana at the beginning of the song). This was during one of their "we're not talking to each other" periods, but it rarely showed onstage, where they were known for perfection. Once Diana caught up, she was, as usual, everything the song needed her to be. You can't poke around backstage and expect to enjoy the show out front.
Very nice. Any Supremes expert would clearly see that Diana Ross messed up the lyrics at the first part of the song. She recovered, but she still doesn't have all the words correct throughout the rest of the song. But, she is a pro. By this time The Supremes already had five #1 records and I Hear A Symphony would soon be their 6th #1. Diana Ross is amazing. Even the best mess up. Human. Back up vocals by Florence and Mary: "When you're close to me, close to me. Baby baby. I hear a symphony"
Hey Dax. When you mentioned that Diana messed up I thought that maybe she messed up the lip syncing because as you said lip syncing was standard and expected on those t.v. shows back then. But when it started and since it was real singing I wouldn't have noticed the mistake if you had not mentioned it. The Supremes were definitely the best girl group in those days. Maybe the best ever. Lots of hits and radio plays. Loved them. Really nice reaction. Take care. JC
Johnny, she recovered really well from the goof at the beginning, almost seamlessly, and if you notice, the other two girls were looking over at her because of the way she started out and they recovered well as well. Yeah they were amazing! Thanks!
Very interesting. I'm always befuddled by those who think that Flo was a better singer and thus more deserving of the lead. I, for one, think Diana's voice was more distinctive and better, and that's a matter for debate, but what's unquestionable is that in the matter of allure and charisma there was no contest, whatsoever. Diana all the way. Featuring Diana was a brilliant business decision, without which the Supremes would be merely historical rather than legendary and unsurpassed. The pure majesty of this song, by the way, has always moved me to tears.... from way back in the 60's to even now as you present it anew. And, for whatever reason, these past few days I've been craving it. An insatiable jones for it. Seeking out covers, praising those who have done it well (there are three I found particularly charming)... so when I see that you in these past few days have posted this, with the love for it I see on your face, as have I... this seems like more than mere coincidence. LOL. Thank you for this.
Wow, that's something, must be nerves. I know I couldn't remember every word of songs especially with groups like CCR, 3 Dog Night, Turtles and such. That's,a talent in itself. I'm a music historian listening over 60 years. I believe the 60s were the greatest decade for music then the 80s. I agree with some that say 73and 74 were the worst years in music. My favorite group of all time is CCR. John took a hiatus off for Covid, no doubt he will be touring. Best success on yr channel

Some background story to this performance would have let the listener what was going on and why Diana screwed up the intro. If you listen to subsequent performances of "I Hear a Symphony" Diana RARELY can get through the lyrics without error. There is a valid reason for this: Each musical line/verse is repeated throughout the song. The only change is the key signature, which goes up chromatically one half step with each verse. The lyrics don't really tell a story: each line /lyric basically repeats a whimsical feeling, not an action. There's no resolution of thought for the preceding lyric. Finally, you can see that Diana is back on board when she nods her head and smiles, indicating that she has control of the song. Prior, she looks a deer caught in the headlights. Still, a GREAT performance!
Terrific background and analysis. I personally now I have a better understanding. Thank you very much. And yes, indeed, I don’t think it was possible for Diana to give a bad performance.

The reason why DR was off at the very beginning is because the recording or the orchestration of the music is not the Motown arrangement. And it’s easy to understand that it was difficult for her to find her way even to come in at the right time. In my opinion that’s the reason why she messed up the lyrics at the very beginning.
It’s a great song. All their songs are. You completely ignore the voices of both Flo and Mary. They are just as powerful. Listen to this song and focus on Flo and Mary. I would argue they are better than the lead.
I disagree and Berry has said the other two sounded to much like all the other groups nothing that sets them apart from all the other groups Diana's voice sets them apart from other group it's part of reason they became huge the history speaks for itself undeniable and indisputable Mary Wilson has said as late as 2016-17 when Berry Gordy did his stage show about his life Mary said she really did put the right one up front and that is Diana Ross no question. Now if Mary can now reconcile herself then people who for whatever reason should be able to do the same and stop all this corrosive back bitting let that mess go after all no one has done nothing to you all personally , one more thing Mary didn't miss or did she mind cashing those checks when they put them in her hands. She took them straight to the bank I betcha. She did not say no, no I think me or Flo sounded better so I'm not gonna cash this check until you put me or Florence in lead then I'll cash this check nope she cashed those fast as they gave to them .
I can understand you falling all over yourself over Diana Ross. It’s because the camera is not focusing at all on Florence and Mary. The rest of us who know the Supremes are always waiting to see Florence and Mary and if those two ladies get close ups then we start fawning over them as you do over DR.
