A little trick for Kappa Tech-Wrecker: Luis mentioned bouncing it, and one way to do it would be to attack with it while it has a counter, them not blocking, you can have it deal damage and remove the counter and still activate a ninjutsu from your hand to bounce it at end of combat. Propably wont come up too often, but is a good tool to have in mind.
Just wanted to clarify because I know there's a difference when a card says a creature that attacked vs. attacking creature. In the case of Ninjutsu, it says "unblocked attacker" which I'm not used to seeing. So based on the sequence you mentioned, the card is still considered an attacker after combat damage when you remove the counter?
Just wanted to say thanks guys for spending all the time and energy in getting this review out asap. All of your set reviews are such a huuuge help going into pre-release weekends. Appriciate you!
1:36:50 "A raccoon dog of some sort". That would be the Japanese raccoon dog also known as a tanuki. They are real animals, that blew my mind when I found that out.

An underappreciated aspect of Marshall is the integrity when shouting out sponsors.. warning the viewers that investing is risky and not to go head first into it is an added nuance that I don't find in a lot of content online. Huge integrity points.
I think Historian's Wisdom actually works if you tie. The wording is "a creature with the greatest power among creatures on the battlefield". If the greatest power among creatures on the battlefield is 5 and you put this on a 3/3, its power will be 5, so its power will in fact be the greatest power among creatures on the battlefield.
Previously they've specified if ties work, but it's possible this is just another cleaning up unnecessary text. It definitely makes sense to reduce "the creature with the greatest power or tied for the greatest power among creatures on the battlefield" down to "the creature with the the greatest power on the battlefield". I could also see it specifically excluding ties though.
19:29 Keep in mind: you only need to get some other artifact to die on your turn the first time. Once that happens, this feeds itself. Because that first trigger works with the token it makes.
After years of listening to marshal and Louis id say their letter rating system is closer to a pick order than a description of how "good" the card is. ards like that 3/3 defender are probably fine in their archetype but can probably be wheeled so it gets a C. And (even tho it gets owned by the reach dude) that 1 mana 1/1 artifact flying dork is important to take early because it's needed in a lot of different archetypes.
Don't necessarily agree, given that the letters are defined by properties that aren't just a continuous power scale. I think Marshall was asking too much of the card, if anything. The bad red 5-mana saga just before it and the 3/3 defender both getting a D? A big defensive body for a control deck strikes me as the definition of the "role player" line they use when they talk about Cs.
@@alexanderdickens2517 I hear you friend. Again, try not to think of the letter grades as a power scale and more of a pick order. So while yes, the 3/3 is great in a defensive enchantress deck it will probably wheel as most decks at your table want to attack with their 2 drops. So it gets a D bc it'll be in the pack w/ 5 cards that are like that 5 mana do nothing enchantment. In sealed, you're absolutely right, the 3/3 is probs a C. But these reviews are focused on draft primarily and the letter grades are more like a pick order.
Note on the Gainlands since nobody has posted it yet that I can tell: they aren't regular commons, they're in the land slot (L in the bottom left). You get either a regular basic, an ukiyo-e basic, or a gainland in each pack, which means they aren't really common and appear more similarly to an uncommon. so the set won't be super-multicolored like Khans when the gainlands were actual commons.
One of the huge things this set highlights that wotc got so much better at is making high synergy sets that have a lot of cards that fit multiple synergies. Basically secret gold cards where the hidden off color pairing is essentially hybrid.
Can someone explain for a relative newbie how Akki War Paint gets a grade of D trending towards F? (around 29:45). For only a cost of 1, it can pump up one of your creatures and provide a modification for a set that likes to reward modifications (especially when playing limited). Seems like a C to me. I've been playing for less than a year, so I'm trying to learn. Love the depth of this game, and I'm glad I decided to give it a shot!

one thing I think they kind of missed with fang of sangeki the 1/1 G deathtoucher is that being threatened an attack with this vs the green decks is always a risk because you never know when the enemy might swap it out for another ninja. good mind game potential here
The main issue is that a early 1/1 deathtouch attacking shoukd generally be blocked by another cheap creature (unless the opp can generate tokens with ease), so better save it for blocking. It can get through some clogged boardstates lategame, when you geberally would just take the one and then you can get a impactfull ninjutsu (such as the ninja turtle). Its not as reliable as a flying, but it can be seem as a soft ninjutsu enabler, but i would guess more towards the mid-late game
@@Blackvolttage sure I agree in most sets a cheap 1/1 deathtoucher serves as a board stall, but just think about last set how many times someone dropped the scorpion on turn 2 then attacked on turn 3. I wasn't generally willing to trade it off for my 3 drop, but knowing there's a chance they could swap it out I might have to take that trade more often. who knows maybe ninjutsu could just be a bust
1:52:00 It feels like this set had a bit of overdevelopment, and this card suffered. I'll bet it was designed at XGG or XXG, the latter of which seems fair.

Kamigawa is looking awesome. These artifacts and enchantments are interesting. A mono Red Armed Samurai (samurai/equip/modify) deck seems pretty viable. I can't wait to build some new stuff and check some of this stuff out in commander. This set is definitely going to make me re-look at my artifact/enchanment decks. BW vehicles is looking cool too.
@44:00 I wonder if the reason they didn’t do that is because it’s so similar to Mutate. That’s not even a bad thing, but I could see them not wanting to make a better mutate so soon.
With the ninja turtle you can attack/ninjutsu it in, deal damage, use the trigger, then activate ninjutsu with another ninja in the post damage step to return it to hand to reset it on a later turn.
Favorite (theoretical) way to use Kappa Tech-Wrecker: Attack with deathtouch, opponent doesn't block, use the trigger to kill something, Ninjutsu the still unblocked Kappa in the combat damage step and replay it with a fresh counter ready to block. Preferably with a second Kappa :D
They already solved the "Make the aura on an equipment apply to the creature that's equipped it" with the Kaldheim Rune auras. If they really wanted things to work that way, they already have it implemented mechanically.
Great overview, can't wait to try the set out I'm calling it now, I think you've undervalued Michiko's Saga. It's definitely a buildaround, it has no place outside of all-in on art/enchs, but in that deck it's not unreasonable for it to be a Monstrous Growth with rebound, then a big body at the end. When you're outmuscled on board this can let your Dragonfly Suit attack into their Dragon Spirit twice I don't think you cast it on curve, this is like a turn 5 play, ideally alongside some 3 drop art/ench.
20:34 Keep in mind treasures are also artifacts! And when we use them, we sacrifice them :) So, sack a treasure, get the mana, do something with that mana and get an additional 1/1? Yah! Can't use the mana? Use it's tap ability and drain! Yah yah!
They both missed something about Oni-Cult Anvil - you can sacrifice the token during each of your turn and it will always come back. The card need just 1 artifact to go off, so it's less build around and more like a solid card.
"During your turn"- so you can tap it on either turn to sacrifice an artifact but if you want the 1/1 you can only do it on your turn. And only once that turn.
I think they didn't understand Storyweave properly. So the idea is you have a Kamigawa saga, you target it to flip it, it then exiles and returns back into a creature WITH TWO +1/+1 COUNTERS. That makes this pretty good. And by the way, Discover The Impossible is NOT an F, even if you don't have a single 2 cost instant in your deck. Digging 5 deep for a card and putting it into your hand is amazing. It gets the answer you need, gets the bomb you need, it digs through your deck when you need a the card that will win you the game, the card WILL see a lot of limited play, standard play, modern play, legacy play, and vintage play.
It's always fun listening to Marshall and LSV disagree on a card. They both make valid points but in the end who would you want a tip from at the plate, Ted Williams or Joe Castiglione?
The thing is, they're both usually right. They're each just talking about 2 different game situations for the card or even different contexts for the card.
@@MuscleMTG I agree entirely, am glad and grateful for both their opinions. The $4-7 spent on patreon equals major gain in arena. Marshall does a great job at translating LSV for people like me that can only invest a minimal amount in time gaming.

Regarding Spinning wheel kick, I think that the card was designed so that you'd pair it with fangs of shingeki, kappas & other deathtouch creatures. That being said, even with that build around you really need multiple in addition to big creatures for it to pay off, so it's probably not worth it
One thing that was missed in the discussion is that Containment Construct can be good with Channel cards, since Channel is a discard ability. However, I agree that overall it's extremely clunky. It's a very expensive, situational card advantage engine that otherwise is a slightly bad artifact creature, so unless you're in the market for "slightly bad artifact creature," it's probably not worth it.
You know that 3/3 reach defender in green you were sort of down on? After watching the review of white... I think you need it to not get run over. I was wondering why there were so many cards with reach and there looks like a lot of aggressive fliers. White has a lot of early aggressive power that if it gets any of its incidental set up in place on curve you need something a bit bigger to deter aggression or at least trade until you get something big out. White looks pretty good.
I feel like moonssnare prototype may be better than you guys give credit. I mean it is a lanawar elf for the most part that can be a removal spell late game?
Pretty sure you can just attach from one creature directly onto another. It lets you unattached for the configure cost just so you have the option of getting your original creature back.
Isn't Mnemonic Sphere just Behold the Multiverse that you can sometimes buy back from the graveyard? BtW was solid in Kaldheim, and this time we have artifacts matter theme in the set to boot.
I'm comparing it to Cryptic Illumination from Amonkhet, either draw 2 for 4 or draw 1 for 1/2. Main difference is the timing, but its also nice that you can get the second card later if you couldn't before
@@MsMollieMac Yep, honestly I think it will be very good. 2 mana + 2 mana for a draw 2 also means it helps find your 3rd land drop. Though honestly you are normally going to be better off "cycling" it T1 for that because losing T2 and T3 is too brutal, so it is still usually a Hieroglyphic illumination there.
I think they missed that Spinning Wheel Kick is much better with all the Deathtouch in green. That probably bunps it up to D+/C- Still feels like it should have been XXG rather than XXGG though. Would that have been too strong?
For xxg you would run it mostly as a 3 mana bite. So they wanted you to bite(or in this case kick i guess) multiple creatures with it. Xggg could do the trick, but then it would scale insanely. (7 mana bite 4 is pretty close to a boardwipe)
For those of us who love this hobby, these shows are like Christmas morning. Thank you!

Jukai Naturalist is thinking of the 420 enchantments it's going to decrease the costs of...
Invigorating Hot Springs looks like a fixed Rhythm of the Wild, might be decent
Yeah but hot springs is better as a top deck, just start augmenting whats on the field already
Isn't Mnemonic Sphere just Behold the Multiverse that you can sometimes buy back from the graveyard? BtW was solid in Kaldheim, and this time we have artifacts matter theme in the set to boot.
I thought that too at first. Then I remembered the scry 2 on Behold
We need to give LSV a lot of credit for doing this set review in an earthquake.
I think they missed that Spinning Wheel Kick is much better with all the Deathtouch in green. That probably bunps it up to D+/C-
Still feels like it should have been XXG rather than XXGG though.
I think if it stayed at XXGG but also gave +X/+0 that would make it more appealing without being too strong
