The movements create the phrase, not the phrase dictating the motions. Economy of motion getting three notes from one motion, also the benefit of being relaxed when playing and avoiding injuries common to drummers. These are golden nuggets of truth for all of us, no matter what genre of music we play. Thanks, Phil, as usual, you hit it out of the park with this video!
This leads on to a question that seems sort of dumb but in medium tempo jazz ride with rebound double = 1 2 - D 3 4 - D should I be bouncing into the 3 and 1 from the D putting an accent on the off beat ( D ) or playing it like a hi hat shuffle that plays into the down beats 1 2 3 4 . Jazz ride can be a straight 4 Feel It's hard to put into text but basically "am I meant to be accenting the ride to pulse the 4s .1 2 3 4 ." Playing the grace notes as a bounce I'm sort of playing a feel that ends up feeling a mix of down beat and up beat for the double . Dumb question but I best ask it or remain dumb !
I would say don't let technique dictate what the music needs. Rather see what swings and work your technique to facilitate that. As long as you are executing correctly the body is safe. Everything else when it come to music, groove etc, is another story and skill. Know what i mean? A deep and very good question! Thank you!
Thanks for including tradition grip in your lessons.
You got it Jim :-) Many greetings from Bali!
