  • In this video, I'll show you how to make a simple self watering bucket. It is perfect for those who do not have time to constantly water, or those who just forget to water. It is also great for places with hot weather and can help your plants survive. You can also reuse this bucket many times when your plant dies from frost or disease. Fertilizers may be added through the reservoir tube as well.

    I participated in the original design of these about 12 years ago. You did a great tutorial!
    A few suggestions:
    1. Cut a 45° angle on the bottom of the fill tube so it doesn't sit flush on the bottom of the bucket. It'll allow for the water to flow into the Bucket.
    2. Be certain that whatever you use as the platform to hold that lid cut out will not collapse under the weight of the damp soil, otherwise your soil will end up in constant contact with the water and could become anaerobic.
    The overflow hole is cut an inch below the soil platform to create an AIR GAP between the soil and the water. It is very necessary that the gap doesn't dissappear under the weight of the wet soil collapsing into the reservoir.
    Finally, you can use a 2nd lid with a smaller hole cutout to allow your seedling to grow through it. This will protect the unit from becoming too saturated if it rains. Or, stretch a garbage bag over the top, and cut an "X" in the plastic. Set your seedling then affix the lid rim in place over the plastic. Trim off the excess plastic.
    I know these work!
    Our original design was based on the patented Earthbox, so we called these "eBuckets."
    Thanks for resurrecting this much-needed answer to promoting food security.
    "Feeding the world, one eBucket at a time!"

    there are two things you may want to do to keep mosquitos from getting to the water and laying eggs. I put screen material in the drain hole. Window screening also works. Put a cap on the pvc pipe that you use to refill with. I place coffee filters over the holes to hold the dirt from falling into the water area. A place a cut piece of screen cloth over the lid. Remember that the roots take a while to get its roots that deep, you will need to water from the surface.

    Thanks for taking the time to do this video. Some helpful hacks: Cut top off a plastic bottle for a funnel that can be left in place. Put a piece of window screen on the pipe first to keep out mosquitos. If no pipe available, piece of old garden hose works too. I had access to lots of buckets so just dropped one into another. Quick, easy, and doesn’t require cutting the lid or providing support in the reservoir. Just drill holes like you did. Microfiber cloths make great long-lasting wicks. Split end that goes into dirt into 3-4 strips to spread out in soil. Positioning overflow hole to allow about 1” of air space is vital, and do check that bucket is set on level ground to maintain that air space all the way around.
    Love these buckets for our hot Hawaiian summers!

    Thank you for this great tutorial. I appreciate all the comments that give tips, also. A great place to find lided buckets for free would be construction sites (like home communities) where you can ask for any empty paint buckets with lids. Just let the paint dry entirely then peel the dried latex paint off the buckets. And, the buckets are somewhat thicker than the Lowe's or Home Depot buckets. So, more muscle power, please. Thank you, Ms Hawaii for resurrecting this idea. Loving it. 🌺

    Improvement: for plants that need stakes, cages to support plant (tomatoes) drill hole for fill pipe in center of lid. Then run fill pipe wild too any length you need then use fill pipe to attach plant to pipe. This will work with any wicking bucket design. I glue a pipe fitting to bottom of bucket for extra support. If you use her design you can drill a hole in bottom of support container and run pipe thru it Don't glue pipe to fitting so you can remove pipe to change dirt. Dooesn't matter where wick hole is. I use a metal garden stake instead of plastic pipe, especially with indeterminate tomatoes. I think the "stake" is 1/2" by 8 or ten feet long. You can use a pipe cutter ($3- 5.00) or saw like she has or hacksaw. Well worth a little extra time! If your fill pipe is long, you can use a T fitting and elbow to create a fill point any where along fill point

    I'm glad I wandered into your channel. Finally, someone from Hawaii who has experience, common sense, and does not over-talk.
    So many of the websites mention frost date and starting seedlings indoors. I live in Kealakekua, elevation 1,700 ft.
    Will my strawberries, cherry tomatoes, and sweet potatoes keep on growing because we don't have distinct seasons? I don't have the specifics about the plants. They were all given to me by friends. Mahalo

    • @HawaiiUrbanGardener
      @HawaiiUrbanGardener  2 роки тому +1

      Mahalo for stumbling upon my channel! I don't know much about the Big Island but I know you are near Kona. I think your plants will be fine. Sweet potatoes and tomatoes love sun and warm weather. I think even here on Oahu if you start seeds in "winter" when the night time temperature dips near the low 60s they will take a while to grow but they won't die. But if they're already mature they will be fine. If you start tomato seeds in summer they grow faster. Your strawberries will be most productive in our cooler weather in winter and spring but may die in the heat of summer. Happy gardening!

    Changes I'd make.... Screening or a cap over the intake, and a piece of screen over the overflow to keep bugs out. I'd also treat it more like an Earthbox, in that I'd mound the soil above the bucket's rim and cover the soil with a plastic sheet with X cut for the plant to stick through. This keeps weeds from growing, keeps rain from flooding and overflowing your fertilizers away through the overflow hole, and the cover also keeps moisture inside your bucket instead of letting it evaporate out the top.

  • @insipidgimp

    I made some of these, but I used an empty potting soil bag as “mulch”.
    1. After setting up bucket, cut a big circle of the plastic bag to fit over over bucket, leaving 4-5 “ to spare.
    2. Lay plastic circle on top of bucket soil.
    3. Snap on the leftover circle you cut off of lid (to hold plastic bag circle in place).
    4. Cut X in plastic bag “mulch” where you want to plant your seedling. (You can also direct sow seeds too)
    5. Water transplant like in your video
    6. To hide plastic, cover with regular mulch or shredded paper, etc.
    This method works great in hot climates in Texas. Also, it makes removing regular mulch much easier because after harvest, simply roll up plastic and shake mulch into compost bin. If you’re carful, you can reuse the plastic mulch again.

    This was so cool to learn! Bet it’s a lot more affordable than buying these. The little drainage/overflow hole on the side…what do you use to gauge its placement? Is the goal to have it as close to the big lid down in the bucket as possible but making sure it’s below that lid line, not above it? Love how the lid piece you cut off can be snapped back on so it doesn’t end up in a trash heap too!

    • @HawaiiUrbanGardener
      @HawaiiUrbanGardener  2 роки тому +2

      Sorry it was a little hard to explain, but for the drainage hole placement, I lift the bucket up into the light/sunlight and you will be able to see the shadow of the lid inside. I place my mark to drill the hole right below the lid line. You could make it right above the lid line if you live somewhere really hot. But if you don't then you may risk mold or root rot if it sits in moist soil too long. Thanks for the comment!

    The lid rim going back on the bucket rim stabilizes the bucket. Especially if you tend to move buckets around. Which i have to as i rent and the management requires i move them when they mow.

      @@pushpamitha430 honestly as a rose plant lover I would not risk it. With veggies the eventually die and it gives you time to replenish the soil and clean out the water reservoir. After a season the water will get dirty and you will have to clean the bucket. It is reusable after cleaning. You may use cans or other items to hold the lid. I'd stick to veggies. Roses live a long time and are precious.

    Great video with such clear instructions. It’s amazing how big your veggies get in a 5 gallon bucket. I didn’t catch how tall your Tupperware is and wanted to know how many inches of soil mix you can have per bucket.

      The Tupperware was maybe about 6 or 7 inches tall. But there's no rules. Just remember the shorter things you use the less water in your reservoir and more soil you have to put in the bucket. The less water means more refilling. If you don't mind refilling then it's not a problem. Doesn't matter how much soil you put as long as there is a good amount for the plants roots to grow and spread. I'd say my water reservoir is 1/4 of the bucket and the rest is soil.
