My first imperfect experiment. I’ve grown in buckets before with great success but watering is a twice a day just to keep up. Container plants have perfect fruits with little maintenance other then to fertilize more often on my old bucket type that didn’t have a water pocket. I will say this if not using a fill tube which I’m not, fill the bucket and water bottles so they don’t flow then dump your soil in. I used a gallon jug with water bottles. I threw in 18 onion bulbs and am excited to see how it does. Next season I. Going for 10 buckets. 4 tomato plants and will figure out the rest later. For people who think they have to dig up a plot, you don’t. Anybody can grow food.
How do you get the water inside of the plastic containers inside of the bucket so that water can wake up to the roots. Otherwise remove the plastic containers filled with dirt and like you said add water from the top not much sense I like your concept

The bottles are acting like air chambers, they dont all hold water. They will fill from those holes as water goes down through the soil but aren't meant to be filled. You can add a pipe to the jug to be a bottom watering reservoir that will disperse the water as the soil wicks it up.
Nice video and i like the set-up but a couple of questions. I would need to maintain a certain level of water and if i have to water it daily the self wicking defeats its purpose. I think a pipe to fill the jugs with water is needed. At what point is it self wicking if im not filling the jugs with water?
Thank you and great questions!!! A pipe would be great to fill the water in the main jug for sure the water bottles are a nice reservoir. Self wicking is the idea that there's always water available for the roots, keeping this in mind your set-up will work well for you!

As the plants are given water, it will rise inside the jug (up to the hole near the top). I would probably give it a head start by filling the jug with water before completely filling the bucket with soil...or insert a 1” pvc pipe into the jug (but that wouldn’t really be necessary since water always seeks its own level). You could do an experiment to see how it works by submerging an empty water bottle (with a hole in the bottom and one at the upper end) into a bowl of water to see how the water seeps in through the bottom to fill the bottle to the same level as in the bowl.
Great video except for the part where you water. Where do you put the water? In the milk jug? In the water bottles? How does the wicking process work with this? Basically, your entire video made no sense, especially for beginners.

This system will take too long to fill the reservoir because it has to go through the soil 1st. The pipe method will allow the filling of the reservoir without disturbing the soil.
I watched many videos to get a good understanding how this works and this explanation helped me the most. Best explanation and design in my opinion. Also not complicated. I love the joke too

Good morning. Things are getting better little by little do to the fires. Love our weather here. Very warm, but fall is here will be cooling down.
I love it here an hour or so to the beaches, or to the mountains where we get snow in the winter.
