    Alois and Jeff, you guys have improved my game exponentially better in the last few days. And I was already considered one of the best players (but far from the best) at Hacker Dojo in Silicon Valley. I'm loving playing with the correct technique and this has dramatically improved my consistency - I used to be known for making a lot of unforced errors and my inability to return a ball 3 times in a row, but now I can match most people in forehand, backhand, chops without making unforced errors.
    And my defensive game is getting better each day (it didn't even exist about a week ago)! Thank you, PingSkills!

    I think it is a matter of practicing more to get used to the stroke. If you are constantly hitting the ball off the end of the table, then you can change the angle of your bat slightly to face down more.

    @liebefussball there's two way of backhand. you can use your forehand side or backhand side. watch pingskills' video for forehand side one. for penhold, backhand using backhand side rubber is called reverse penhold backhand. rpb counterhit is basically the same stroke except that the head of the bat will be lower than your hand at the start position, and that you have to lift your elbow a little bit. try searching something like 'wang hao backhand','reverse penhold backhand'.

    Hi. Thank you in advance for the incredible quantity and quality of material you uploaded on youtube!
    I'd like to ask a question about the difference of the role of the wrist between forehand and backhand.
    It seems to me that on the backhand the wrist is way more flexible than on the forehand, am I right? Or is it flexible also in the forehand? Thank you for you time!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  8 років тому

      Hi Marco,
      You are correct. The wrist is much easier to use and much more effective on the backhand. If you take a look at our advanced forehand video we describe how the wrist can help with that shot. And we talk more about the wrist for the backhand in our advanced backhand topspin video. You can find both of these here: www.pingskills.com/table-tennis/strokes-and-technique/

    Then try blocking it. However the best advice is to keep the ball low so it makes it hard for them to smash it in the first place.

    Is it possible to stay still with the backhand counterhit instead of having to shift every hit or so? I can never stay still I always shift even a small cm to get in position.

    Hello Alois, thank you for these great and informative videos.
    I have a question regarding one of the beginner mistakes you named.
    I'm trying to teach my girlfriend how to play correctly and your videos are a great help. She does however tend to push her right foot forward when she hits a backhand. Is there a good exercise that would help to correct this mistake? I try to make her be aware of her stance and she realises, what she's making wrong, but the stance remains the same.
    Thanks

    • @PingSkillsFrench
      @PingSkillsFrench 8 років тому +1

      Good to hear you are helping your girlfriend with her game. He right foot coming forward happens a bit if they are unbalanced and not low enough with their legs. The other thing that causes this is being impatient to hit the ball rather than waiting for it to come to you. Get her in a low leg position and waiting for the ball to come to her and see if this helps.

    Should we keep our legs stamp when forehand counterhit...or should i just footwork when striving for topspin ?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 років тому

      Try to move into place and be steady before you actually play the shot. This is the ideal way but sometimes you don't have time so you need to do the best you can.

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 років тому

      That's right. This stroke is really a building block for the backhand topspin which is more aggressive.

    hi at 2:12 you mention that the bat should be flat facing where you want to the ball to go. is this technique the same for the forehand counter hit? (I've watched the FH counter video, but I don't think it was mentioned?

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 років тому

      The bat itself will face where you want the ball to go but with the forehand the bat is obviously to your side. We point this out here for the backhand because a lot of people when learning try to swing outside of their body.

    • @pingskills

      The best tip is to start slowly. Don't swing very fast and once you get some more balls on the table then you can increase the speed. If the ball is going off the end of the table then close the racket angle slightly on contact. Good luck!

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  5 років тому

      Yes it can come at different heights but if the ball goes really high then you might have time to move around and play a forehand. The backhand can be very awkward if the ball gets above shoulder height.

    My friend and I play TT. He always serves me a combination of top spin+side spin, so the ball would spin at an angle of about 30-40 degree. I'd try to return his serve with a backhand counter hit. 80% of the time the ball would swerve off the right or left side of the table without hitting it. I am getting frustrated and now I don't know what to do. :(

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  6 років тому +1

      Are you able to tell when the ball is going to spin to the left and when it's going to spin to the right? This is the starting point. Once you can tell this then you need to angle your bat as you mention to counter the spin. You can find all our tutorials on this topic on our website at: www.pingskills.com/categories/serving-and-receiving

    • @pingskills

      If the ball goes too low then you are better off putting more topspin on the ball to get it to dip down. Here's a video that might help you in that situation - ua-cam.com/video/sGki_uhx_c8/v-deo.html
      If you want to attack the ball you are better off hitting it before it drops too low.

      Good luck!

    This video completely ignores the very important fact of body posture, bending over the ball and stuff like that, do you have any advanced videos where you go into detail over body postures, when to take the ball, because that's my main issue. I've learned the strokes quite well, and am a decent player, but coach says I always take the ball too early, and i can feel my self leaning my bodyweight on my heels instead of toes.. also if you could touch on the subject of leg work coordination with the strokes, that would really benefit myself(and I'm sure a lot of other players would also appreciate it)
    Thanks,
    Rob.

      ugotownedk Thanks for the feedback Rob. We generally like to keep things simple. If beginners focus on too many things it becomes overwhelming. If you get the basics of the correct feet position, the correct starting position, and the correction finishing position, most people will have the stroke working very well.
      We do cover some more advanced points in some of our other videos though. Take a look at our advanced backhand topspin for an example:
      www.pingskills.com/table-tennis/strokes-and-technique/advanced-backhand-topspin/
      It's great that you are aware of what your issues are. If you are taking the ball too early try to wait. The best way to do this is to think about letting the ball come to you. Try to hit the ball where you could comfortably catch the ball with two hands. Let me know if that helps. You can also ask any questions on our website using the ask the coach page. We check there often and usually respond pretty quickly.

    i have noticed that almost all world class players change their grip during the rally (forehand/backhand) so there must be more pros than cons about it or idk the reason then xD

    • @pingskills
      @pingskills  7 років тому

      As long as it's only a small change in grip such that just by getting ready for the stroke on either side the bat is already in position then it's not a problem. It only becomes an issue if it's a really big grip change and the player gets caught out with the incorrect grip.
