- Many of you have asked how my Textualis Quadrata is different. Here is a video to explain why.
I built a geometric construct to help me learn TQ, over 20 years ago. It is what I start students off with in my Gothic Script Classes as it forms a sturdy framework on which they can graft historical textualis scripts as well as other gothic scripts, like Prescissus, Fraktur, Batarde and Rotunda as well as some of the more cursive vernacular hands found in the Middle Ages.

Calligraphy isn’t only about western script donee cannot think in this Latin dimension only. Textualis Quadrata resonates with Thuluth in a surprising way. It is something I had a chance to explore a little in Kuwait.

Hey Paul Antonio! I love watching and learning form your writing-have you ever dabbled in secretary hand? I’ve looked all over UA-cam and found plenty of examples of it but nothing of people actually writing it. Anyways, keep up the wonderful work!
I taught a class on it a few years ago. I am not sure where the handouts are as it was 3 studio moves ago. You also have to know which type of Secretary Hand and from which period as it spans a long period of use. Glad you like the work.
Paul, I will say, probably the best explanation out there of the variations. I will second that if you study TQ, they do appear irregular in their spacing and it’s frustrating for me, but you demonstrate why. Really wanted to attend your class coming up but I’m traveling that day :-(
