I have a large two volume dictionary of Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, and a book of a full translation of the Book of the Dead. Many years ago, one of my art teachers had us paint a large mural in ancient Egyptian style. Most of the students just copied out of books, I did my painting, but then surrounded it with a lot of text that actually said something. For the record, it WASN'T something polite. I revel in the fact I got kudos from the principle of the school for a painting that called his various hygiene and sexual practices into question and cast doubt upon the marital status of his parents. I love those books.
I am excited to revisit the Egyptian wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Perhaps I might even be able to interpret a phrase or two or at least pretend :-) thank you both. Nick you did a good job standing in for the rest of us, and Ilona you are an amazing teacher!
@@britishmuseum Oh wow, this confirms that Dr Finkel indeed is a time-traveling sorcerer of most probably Chaldean extraction. Aren't you glad I commented here, you'd never become a cuneiform expert otherwise!
Puh, didn't know this morning, that I would have lerned so much more in the evening. Thanks for that. And, as I tell my students: 'Always look for the verb.'
This was fascinating and fun! I missed my calling in life. It's amazing to be able to learn all this information about people who lived so long ago. Incredible!
To Dr. Ilona Regulski: Is the following accurate/correct to say then ---- Egyptian Hieroglyphs have more than one possible reading, dependent on context. Signs could have both a phonetic (single consonant or syllable) value or an ideogrammatic (word) reading, but could even be utilized as phonetic complements or logograms (a written character that represents a word or phrase), reinforcing the reading of words they were attached to.
Very much so! Hieroglyphs can be tricky, because even through they look like pictures, most of the time the meaning of the sign is not the same as the thing pictured. It is a mixed script - some signs are alphabetic, like the letters in our alphabet. Other signs make a group of sounds, like a syllable. Still other signs are an entire word. Occasionally the same hieroglyph can do all three things! And sometimes, hieroglyphs aren’t pronounced at all - these are called ‘determinatives’, and they sit at the end of a word to give us a clue to the meaning of that word.
Love this….. The only tiny ‘but’ was that i would have loved to hear the translation in its entirety, First in hiroglyphic and then in english (or the other Way around)
So Ilona does that right at the end, but it's alternating between Egyptian and English. But you mean all the way through in each language separately right? If so, will bank that in for the next one.
@@britishmuseum yes - that was exactly what i meant - switching it up if fine, but reading it all the way through in each language, just works better for some brains ;) To me it just made it confusing switching back and forth for each column…
After watching the webinar earlier and now this, I'm really looking forward to visiting the exhibition on the 29th. I'm only coming back to the UK for a short visit, but will always make time for the BM.
My mom is an archaeologist. Her professional interest lies in a completely different period in human history, but through all these years, she has managed to make archaeology fun for me. I do not deal with archaeology professionally, but topics like the one presented here will never cease to interest me. Great job to you for how wonderfully you promote science. As for Ms. Ilona’s accent… Polish is my native language, and it seems to me that I hear a tiny, tiny accent coming from this language. Am I right, folks?
Not only was this vid informative and teaching, it was also entertaining. To understand language gives insight to its culture. Also its Religion which seems to be linked to its civilization. Seeking to know the spiritual nature of Egypt and its origin said to be from the survivors of the Great Flood.
Excellent and informative video, this is Mark, I'm a tour guide at the Grand Egyptian museum...I'd love to thank you for such video and btw we Egyptians still till nowadays use the ancient Egyptian language in our daily conversations; for example whenever we wanna praise someone else we go to person and say "You have a Shen and Ren" which means basically "you're a pharaoh", 'cause only the pharaoh was allowed to have his or her name written on such manner...thanks a bunch and I'm waiting for you over there.
I've thought hieroglyphs were beautiful but I never knew that the ancient Egyptians also viewed their writing similarly and basically invented graphic design.
I actually burst out laughing when she looks at him and says, "Just read it!" What a charming human. I'm sure Ilona has better things to do as a curator than make content for YT but please know I will watch every single one she makes.
The earliest cave art to me is communication from heart and mind, very sophisticated subtle meaning. The Egyptians seem to have extended this concept into a systematically reproducible form.
So i have a quick question. I am quite new at reading hieroglyphs but wouldn't it make more sense for the meaning of irj in this case (instead of meaning to do or create) to be used to mean "to watch" as in watchful or watcher over the two lands?
I'm glad to hear that a suspicion I've always had is kinda true. I'd always thought that they sometimes seemed to go out of their way to use the 'cool looking' glyphs when they were writing the name of somebody important, even if it wasn't strictly the most appropriate symbol.
Sooooo…. Any suggestions for those of us who are well past school age on learning, at least the basics, of reading hieroglyphs? What books or other media might you recommend?
The curator was excellent. The presenter guy was presumably meant to help the average viewer relate, by coming off as even more confused and ignorant than the average viewer. Probably a nice guy in real life, but mostly just super annoying here.
Thank you for this great video, I enjoy it very much. Question for the gaming board, you said it was called 'men' . Very often I read or hear that archaeologists call it 'senet'. What is the link or difference between the two namings? Thank you very much in advance. Kindly, Miriam

He'd probably also be irked that you confuse a principal with a principle. 😢
@@Steviepinhead What can I say?
I spell better in Hieroglyphs than I do in English.
😁
Her talent to read such a difficult form of recording information is very incredible

“A beautiful verb” says it all. Language as art. The art of language.
I love it’s ❤ we thirst for more knowledge of this kind, please post more videos to feed our souls.😊

Well done! I love these videos and Ilona’s passion for and deep well of knowledge in this incredible system of art / language. Brava!
Yes! More of this, please!!!
Please don't make me try to learn more ancient languages 🤣

@@britishmuseum Oh wow, this confirms that Dr Finkel indeed is a time-traveling sorcerer of most probably Chaldean extraction. Aren't you glad I commented here, you'd never become a cuneiform expert otherwise!
@@britishmuseum Only if he’s ok with it! :)
Please make more videos like this about hieroglyphs. This one was wonderful.

Puh, didn't know this morning, that I would have lerned so much more in the evening. Thanks for that. And, as I tell my students: 'Always look for the verb.'
I've never heard about the grid line piece and it has become one of my favorites. Amazing.

It is remarkable what one may find on UA-cam . Fascinating stuff thank you for going to all the trouble to post !!

@@britishmuseum yes - that was exactly what i meant - switching it up if fine, but reading it all the way through in each language, just works better for some brains ;)
To me it just made it confusing switching back and forth for each column…

After watching the webinar earlier and now this, I'm really looking forward to visiting the exhibition on the 29th. I'm only coming back to the UK for a short visit, but will always make time for the BM.
Enjoy your time in the exhibition and thanks for making time for us on a short trip
Kei tof gedaan, Ilona! Meer grammatica!
To Nick: we need more of both of you. 😁
"I like verbs" followed by the giggle 😊
Quite complex and fascinating. We need more. Videos of this type.

Not only was this vid informative and teaching, it was also entertaining. To understand language gives insight to its culture. Also its Religion which seems to be linked to its civilization. Seeking to know the spiritual nature of Egypt and its origin said to be from the survivors of the Great Flood.
The lady gives very interesting and easy to understand explanations 👍🏼.
It's a shame that the young man keeps interrupting with stupid comments.
The presenters were great, but the editor made some weird choices. Why the parts where the screen fades to and from black? Just let us see the things.
This was so interesting! The explanation of hieroglyphs was so clear.
It's fascinating to catch glimpse inside the mind of these ancients. I love this stuff
So i have a quick question. I am quite new at reading hieroglyphs but wouldn't it make more sense for the meaning of irj in this case (instead of meaning to do or create) to be used to mean "to watch" as in watchful or watcher over the two lands?
Let the lady talk.
Bravo. Loved it. Would like to hear more from Ilona please.

I think even my English teachers in school looked at grammar as a necessary evil.
I love Curtors Corner.
Curator's corner I mean.
I'm glad to hear that a suspicion I've always had is kinda true. I'd always thought that they sometimes seemed to go out of their way to use the 'cool looking' glyphs when they were writing the name of somebody important, even if it wasn't strictly the most appropriate symbol.
I can't believe that people have become so uncomfortable saying , person , man or feminine. It's just uncalled for .
Unfortunately this is true throughout our societies today. Either fight back or take it on the chin.
Sooooo…. Any suggestions for those of us who are well past school age on learning, at least the basics, of reading hieroglyphs? What books or other media might you recommend?
Eminems Hat . Got it ! 👍
This was absolutely amazing to watch - and I finally understand what these hieroglyphs mean (not literally but I always wondered what the deal was).

The curator was excellent. The presenter guy was presumably meant to help the average viewer relate, by coming off as even more confused and ignorant than the average viewer. Probably a nice guy in real life, but mostly just super annoying here.
Wonderful exhibit!!! So inspired that we've booked a Nile cruise in 2025 to see and learn more about this fascinating culture and period in history.
The only reason the pyramids are still in Egypt is because they were too heavy for the British to carry them away.
1000%
It’s ironic considering how peaceful and egalitarian the ancient Egyptians were.🙄
A wise man points to the moon. The monkey points to the wise man’s finger.
@theom.., Point well taken..!!
Unfortunately there was no similar obstacle to you stealing that joke.
Thank you for this great video, I enjoy it very much. Question for the gaming board, you said it was called 'men' . Very often I read or hear that archaeologists call it 'senet'. What is the link or difference between the two namings? Thank you very much in advance. Kindly, Miriam
Nick seems a really nice person, but dear British Museum, let's face it: people watching this video are irreducible language nerds. GIVE US A LONG AND BORING HIEROGLYPHS CLASS. No mercy, bring it on. No sugarcoating, no attempt to make it engaging. Just hard, dry and technical.
In future we will take this approach. Yours sincerely Nick 'sugar coating the grammar' Harris
Thank you both! This was an enlightening talk and I'd love to learn more!
