This is the start of Bob Barker's legendary 50-year television career. We will miss you forever. Both are the legendary faces of television. Bob Barker (1923-2023) and Ralph Edwards (1913-2005)
3:05 "Remember this name. You're going to be hearing a lot about him." Just a little trivia. Ralph Edwards lived until 2005, by which time Barker was 33 years into hosting Price is Right. In other words, he lived long enough to see how unbelievably RIGHT he was! Rest in Peace to both Ralph and Bob.
I remembered my mother watching Truth or Consequences when i was a little girl. Thank you Bob for all the good memories you came into our home. You and Dorothy Jo together again R.IP🌹🙏
"The man we selected has one of the brightest futures in television... remember this name you're going to be hearing alot about him..." I thought it was interesting that The Price Is Right aired daily on NBC before this show and yet Bob went on to host it on CBS for so many years.
Ralph Edwards is a relative of mine on my biological fathers side. It's amazing to have this connection to him and Bob Barker. Unfortunately I never got to meet him (long story), but this is great that I can watch these things and see him. RIP Ralph and Bob.
I can remember watching Truth or Consequences as a young child on our black and white tv in the 60's. It was one of my parents favorite television shows and we never missed it. RIP Bob Barker
"The man we picked to host Truth or Consequences, we feel, has one of the brightest futures in television. Remember this name, you're going to be hearing a LOT about him, Mr. BOB BARKER!" Wow. I know this could have been just hype at the time, but OH, HOW RIGHT Ralph Edwards was!
Bob stepped up to the plate and hit a moon shot on the first pitch. What a talented man, hope he sees 100 this year. A lifetime of working your dream job is good for the heart I suppose.
@@willmack5909 He's up in heaven with Betty White. My grandmother did make it to 100-blind, deaf, osteoporosis, dementia, but she was proud she had made it to 100. Getting old-it's not for sissies.
The man we selected has one of the brightest futures in television... remember this name you're going to be hearing alot about him..." Ralph Edwards was right. Who would've ever thought Bob Barker would be such a legend after 65 years?!
Thank you for posting this video. Even though this episode occurred almost 67 years ago, it seems hard to believe it's been that long ago (for me). 🙂 (Chase)
This was broadcast slightly before I was born. I remember watching this when I was in Florida at the age of 3. When we moved to the Midwest, there was something comforting to see one show at our new location that we saw in Florida. Bob has always been around one way or another. RIP
I was 20 days old when this show aired (born Dec. 11, 1956). My mom wasn't due to have me till 1/2/1957, so I was a bit of a preemie and was still in the hospital. I only weighed about 5 pounds. (Jan Griffiths).
At first when I saw him, especially when he was staring down a man who could well have been a mentor to him, I was ready to go into the comments and say "I guess even Bob Barker was stiff when he was green." 10 minutes later, I see the 80's Bob Barker shine through, proven wrong.
Now I remember how Bob Barker got his start. It was on that day Monday December 31st 1956 when he actually started! That's why I'm glad to see this first show that aired on that day.😊 And Bob Barker look so young at that time! And by the way during that time. Did they ever give away that Studebaker Seahawk to some lucky contestant? Because back then that was one beautiful car!
@@leonardbrinkman4410 indeed…there are always two dates by which I remember Bob - December 12, his birthday (a Tuesday this year), and September 4, 1972, the airdate of the first “New Price is Right”, with him as host. This year 9/4 is Labor Day, as it was in 1972.:
@@mediachristiantv7472 I remember that too it is just one of those days that I would remember anyway. As a matter of fact I remember what I watched that on September 4th 1972 when Bob Barker's first episode was just done. It was really something that really made sense! Add your right September 4th of this year is on a Monday the same day that Bob Barker had his first episode of The Price is Right back in 1972! And by the way when they do to Bob Barker's 100th anniversary that would be great I mean his 100th birthday that is.
I will remember watching that myself when they do start the 100th anniversary, but there was only one thing that I do remember, he got close to 100 without going over!
R.I.P. Bob - When I was a young boy in the 50s, I took a bus into Hollywood & sat in the audience & raised my hand to be a contestant when Bob asked, "Who wants to be on Truth or Consequences?" He didn't pick me, so I came back the next day & when he asked, I stood up & went into the aisle next to him & said, "Bob, I keep coming here & you never choose me!" He said, "With that attitude, Come on down!" I remember it like yesterday. I a game show fanatic as a viewer & as a contestant. This was my first!! Joe
Thanks for posting this! The banter and commercials, while a little cringe-worthy today, were certainly typical for the era. Interesting that this had no paid commercial spots. They were all house ads for NBC. (affiliates could use the "station identification" 35-second pause to insert a paid ad if they wanted to.) So this was truly a pilot for a new show (i.e., a new daily time slot.) Barker and Edwards pulled off the scripted banter at the beginning very well. After Edwards left the stage and the contestants started coming in, Barker had to wing it and ... he was excellent! Of course, he came to this job after doing essentially the same kind of show (audience participation) at KGFJ radio for six years, so he knew how to handle the format. (KGFJ is now Korean-language KYPA.)
"I feel like I had Parry O'Brien's shot put right here!" Parry O'Brien being the two-time shot put Olympic champion having been fresh off his 2nd gold medal win in Melbourne that prior month.
I only knew it because I watched a documentary about him once. When he lived on the Sioux reservation he was apparently a nudist. He liked to swim in the nude quite a bit. He was also a practitioner of the martial arts. Bob Barker was an interesting man who lived an incredible life. May he Rest In Peace.
RIP Bob! Amazing that this was his television debut! And how about that spot for The Price Is Right (with Bill Cullen)? Staying home "sick" in bed watching my heroes (Bob, Art Linkletter, Art Fleming, Art James, Douglas Edwards) was a special treat for me. I specialized in the Arts when I was "away" from school. :)
Ralph Edwards was truly right about Bob Barker, he graced our TV screens and entertained kids and adults sick and home from school/work for 50 years, first on TOC and then TPIR. I still can hear the TPIR theme song ringing in my head, and Bob being a good sport while having a good heart. I hope that the animals he helped/saved are waiting for him at the Rainbow Bridge🌈. RIP Bob, you lived a good life.🎤🕊🦮🐕🦺🐕🐈🐈⬛
Bob Barker came close to 100 years old without going over.
Brilliant!
😁
Bz well said
😁
He's so young, but that voice is timeless.
Yes it was
So young????? Ha ha haaaaaaaaaaaaaa he is in the ground now and very creepy looking
When Ralph Edwards hired him for Truth or Consequences he said that Bob Barker sounded like a young Jack Benny!
Rest in peace, Mr. Barker. You were truly the best game show host ever!
He passed away in his sleep on Saturday night
He
WAS DEFINITELY
WITHOUT A DOUBT THE BEST EVER.
PURE CARISMA.
I was in LA last May and saw his house. He lived close to the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Pat Sajak of "Wheel of Fortune" would be second. He and Vanna are retiring at the end of 2023.
Yes. Absolute legend…
Wild to think he was on television for the next 51 years.
This is the start of Bob Barker's legendary 50-year television career.
We will miss you forever. Both are the legendary faces of television.
Bob Barker (1923-2023) and Ralph Edwards (1913-2005)
Bob's career in radio began long before that..
Ralph Edwards was right when he said we'd hear a lot about Bob.
RIP, Mr. Barker.

And the rest was history.
He's a little nervous, understandably, but he recovers quickly. A legend from day one. :)
I will miss Bob Barker very dearly, but at least we have this debut episode of Truth Or Consequences to remember him by. RIP Bob Barker!

and I remember originally "The Price is Right" was hosted by Bill Cullen!
What a spot on prediction that turned out to be.
Don Pardo was invited to move to move to ABC when the original Price is Right went to that network, but Pardo was loyal to NBC.
Ralph Edwards is a relative of mine on my biological fathers side. It's amazing to have this connection to him and Bob Barker. Unfortunately I never got to meet him (long story), but this is great that I can watch these things and see him. RIP Ralph and Bob.
Bob had it from the start- so relaxed, personable and confident on camera. R.I.P. to a true t.v. legend.
Thank you nice to see his first appearance, may he rest in peace.

He was stunning, even as a young man. May he RIP. Lifting prayers & condolences for his loved ones.
We grew up watching Truth or Consequences !! Bob was the best !
We were lucky growing up when we did 🇺🇲
Long live Bob and Barker's BEAUTIES !
When I lived on campus in 1977 for a semester, I always made it back to my dorm to catch some of TPIR before lunch.
I wish I was around when this game show was popular. Always good to see Bob Barker back in earlier days of television
Whether it was T or C or TPIR, Bob Barker was the greatest MC ever. RIP Bob 😢
What a legend...RIP Mr. Barker. I pray you went to heaven and are enjoying using your talents on the streets of gold.
Rest in peace to the legend Bob Barker 🙏
Funny, Bob’s voice sounds exactly the same, like it never aged
Please make a movie about this guy!
God bless you Bob Barker. Thank you for being an important part of GENERATIONS. Thank you
What a wonderful show! Halfway through, I had no idea what it was about. It's hilarious!
