Recipe for Even Keel Trail Bars:
1 Cup Peanut Butter
1 Cup Honey
1 TSP vanilla extract
Mix together and then add:
1/2 cup finely chopped nuts (I chose pecans)
1/4 cup wheat germ
1 cup chocolate chips
4 1/2 cups oatmeal
When mixed press is a "Well Buttered Pan" and cut into bars. Press almonds into the top of bars - close enough to get an almond in each bite.

Always enjoy watching your gear load out videos, as they are so insightful. All the success / safety on your record breaking FKT hike. Looking forward to your daily GPS updates, and comments, and you're a great source of knowledge, and a real inspiration...
+Daniel Berry Thank you Daniel for all your support
Your videos are so great!! I ran Grandma’s Marathon back when I was 59 years old. I am now I 66 years young hoping to hike the AT this spring ..good luck to you.. you will do great!!!
This is big time stuff here. With your precise planning you are poised for success. All you need to do is take along walk and get it over with. Good luck to you Sir!
Good luck man. I'm excited for your hike and am rooting for you.
Awesome video. I look forward to you breaking the record.
good luck buddy! you got a real nice set up here. almost all the same stuff id bring on a thruhike. cant wait to see some video when you're done!
+matanuska high Thanks MH!!!!!
my family is all in Duluth and im talking to them so i can give you somewhere to pitch your tent if you need to when you get to duluth. i have family is east duluth, my grandma lives on 9th and 13th street duluth a block from chester creek and my cousin has a house in west duluth. they are all good people and i can let em know you just need a spot to tent for the night in their yard. not sure how far from your route they are though but ill figure it out and get you the info.
i think my uncle in east duluth is real close to lester river..hes probably 5-6 blocks up from where the highway goes over lester river. so thats probably 30-40 miles from the end of the trail? im not sure but ill try to see what i can do to help..my family is all really good minnesotans and if i ask them to help me they wouldnt hesitate.
1209 9th street is right near chester bowl ski area and is my grandmas house patricia lemire.. you can A either stealth camp at chester bowl ( i used to do it when i was a kid) its all wooded up there and real selcuded. or you can pitch a tent in her backyard..ill give her a heads up that a strange dirty hiker might pitch a tent in the yard and be gone in the morning and explain to her that you are doing an unsupported thruhike so she cant try to feed shower or wash your clothes..(trust me she would wanna do all that and she has a sauna in the basement she would let you use) but it will be an option for you when you get to town. on the SHT map it shows you go right through chester park so its only a short walk from my grandmas house i used to make that walk all the time when i was a kid. i also have a cousin who lives on 60th ave west duluth. probably 3/4 of the way through the duluth section so you can have options depending on what part of town you are in at that time of night. ill get ahold of him and give you that address also. hes a young kid probably 23 ish and has spent summers in alaska with me. his name is dustin.
Hike on! Awesome video!
Dude you are a freaking scientist with how well you have your setup
I have total faith that you'll succeed in your attempt. Take a few days of chill out time before D-day and may the force be with you. If anything I would ditch the sticky food items, but it all looks green for go.
Best of luck to you. I'm catching up on your AT hike right now. I could feel your pain when the pizza shop stood you up in the parking lot! I'm heading over to Patreon to donate so I can follow you. Trek on brother!
+Joe Root that was a total bummer. Forgot about that pizza place, not accommodating to the hiking community at all. I couldn't believe they were so ignorant to not know where the AT cross through their home town that brings so much business in for them. Thanks for your support Joe, I'll send you a private message today!
good luck fella, you can do this.
+john middleton 👍👍👍
Hey Bigfoot! Very interesting watch you prep up and impressed with the small size of your pack for all those miles. The SHT looks beautiful and wish you the best on your FKT. You got this!
Wishing you all the very best. The journey should balance out for you in that at the start your pack will be heaviest but you will be fresh. At the end tired but with a light pack. Do your best and God Speed :)
If you use a Ziplock freezer bag for your freeze dried meals you can just pour your boiling water straight into it. I do it all the time. No mess to clean up. Best of luck on your FKT!
Been doing FBC (freezer bag cooking) for years. NO pot cleaning.
Fold up the bag, stick it in your trash, lick the spoon, DONE!
A bag cozy is needed to cook the meal but Reflectix is very lightweight. Only need a 2-3 cup pot to boil water.
The meal possibilities are so varied and the cost savings is good, especially compared to "backpacking meals."
Best reference I've seen is the Kirkconnell book.
Posted about that a while back but probably got caught in the utoob spam folder.
Good luck! I think you have this in the bag
In the bag, ISWYDT.
Let's go!!! Good luck man!
Best of luck!! I know you're going to crush it! Happy hiking!
Best of luck! hope the weather is in your favor
+JB Matt Weather looks to be about as perfect as it could be
Good Luck Bigfoot!
Chocolate covered espresso beans are an awesome snack or additive to GORP. Gives me my coffee fix, only real issue is they can melt. Safe trails!
You're gonna crush this!! Have fun. Question about your electronics. You're on an 8-day'r carrying a phone, InReach and Garmin watch. I know you'll be turning the InReach off to conserve juice and you have a battery bank. I carry an InReach, iPhone and Suunto Ambit, along with a 10k mAh battery, but now that batter will charge all my devices for 8 days.. I am curious how you are going to keep your gear charged for 8 days. What is your recharge plan??
I believe you are prepared :) Thanks for giving us insight into all that goes into this type of hike. I wish you well and I will be anxiously waiting to learn that you have had a successful hike !!! Take care and have fun along the way
Good luck brother! I know you can do it.
Happy Trails!!!
Put illumina florescent tape on everything so you can find it at night. Since you're going for speed, I'd really recommend those EFS 400 calorie syrup flasks for electrolytes and quik energy. Godspeed Bigfoot!
Nice setup! Only thing I would change is I'd take an eno with a rain shelter instead of a tent to save weight especially if it's a summer hike, just a personal preference though :)
Coming across this is the holy grail of camping food videos
get er done
Best gear video EVER!! Good luck. God speed.
Good luck mate, this is going to be a fair dinkum effort!
I'd Squeeze out air from any package I can, especially your quilt stuff sack.
Very well organized presentation, a man after my own style. This is a great presentation of what it takes to get a total starting weight of 25#. Questions: 1) Regarding your personal fitness and weight... do you pay much attention to BMI? Have you considered decreasing progressive total "foot weight" (body+clothes/gear on your back+pack/multipack) by lowing calories per day, thus losing some body fat? Are you familiar with the new science of intermittent fasting as it relates to endurance sport performance?
About the wet wipes. Pass this along. Carry them out because since they may not be paper they may not decompose, ever. Look for cellulose which is a paper product.
Can't wait to hear about how it goes!! Best of luck!
Just getting back into backpacking. How do you pack all that food in a bear can for those areas is required? Also, if using a bear can they say leave it secured on the ground vice putting it up in the air. Why is that?
Good luck man. You got this. 👍💪✌
Five years too late but... Why would you dry out the wet wipes? Isn't their purpose to be wet?
Or can you re-wet them?
hey what if you took a turkey size oven bag for a pillow blow it up (obviously) twist and fold the end, rubber band it, and cover with a clothing article from your gear I'm not sure it would work but the idea just popped watching ur vid
Great video! Hike On, Bigfoot!
For my toothbrush I just use a pursonic toothbrush head its 4.8g. Cheaper than the zpacks one and only .8g, if the zpacks is a true 4.0g, and I use the electric part when I'm at home. I highly recommend just buying an electric toothbrush and using the heads when backpacking.
+TheRjmayer Interesting, I like the idea. I'll have to look into it
Sounds like you couldn't be more ready. You're going to crush it
Do you work for atos/rts? Im an otp 3 for mcdonalds and our family org. Also an avid hiker in nj. Been following you for quite awhile. Love the vids! Have learned a lot from you. Great job and keep them coming! Good luck on the fkt this saturday. You got it!!!
+Joe SkyJumper Glad to hear you're part of the McFamily. I am a business consultant. Thanks for all the support!
Super helpfull...just order the nero...i didnt see you pack you sleeping bag?
This FKT is yours, go and get it!
Have you ever hiked Superior Hiking Trail before?
Best of luck!
+Victor P Yes, I have hiked about 230 miles of the 310
no knife? no cordage? only one small empty bottle for water? and no redundant container for boiler water, like a maybe a canteen and canteen cup, things like cotton bandanas, maybe a tarp, weird loadout.
so glad you're all healed up, will you be shooting pics or video during the hike?
+Kaylynn Strain he will be videos (miss Bigfoot)
I’m very close to purchasing a vacuum sealer. Are ziplocks any lighter than the vacuum sealed bags?
How do you use a pocketknife as a prophylactic?
Awesome!! Thanks for sharing.
wow holy shhhhh i would have never imagined it would be that much weight in food!!
+Ruben Noya it's amazing what you need to hike 310 miles in 8 days. I feel really good about my food and volume. Crazy how much food weighs
have you tryed the tablet wipes yet?
hi i'm a new subscriber in your channel and your videos are greats!! can you answer one question please? your gps has a subscription plan. but if you dont pay one month you can use only like a gps? without the 2 way communicator.. because sometimes i dont need the 2 way communicator only a gps.. thanks and i like your tshirt haha
+buenti Thanks Buenti. There are the 4 different plans and you can choose a month to month plan, which is what I do since I don't need it all year, or an annual plan. The month to month is higher in cost as you would expect, but all 4 plans give you the ability to have two way. The lowest plan you get 10 texts and have to pay for each text after that. The higher the plan goes, you get more two way or unlimited two way. I have been doing the second tier plan and have never used all of my 40 texts they give me. Here's a link to the plans:
explore.garmin.com/en-US/inreach/content/docs/consumer-inreach-fees-us-only.pdf
thanks a lot!! But if you dont pay any plan your garmin will not work like a normal gps?
That's some good packing! Well done!
Drop the Gatorade. Just bring lemon juice and honey. Mix that with water. In my opinion, a healthier drink choice.
Carbage menu.....No real protein/fat on the table. Fake Sugar bombs are empty calories. Nutrition poor.
Good luck on the fkt hike, brother! I'm looking forward to following you on your adventures! Sub'd!
Great video as always, Thanks for making your videos assessable for us broke college kids!
+Jake Bates my pleasure
Is the clip on the pocket knife removable?
Lots of sweets!
No beef jerky?
Good luck, dude!
Oh, wait! I'm late!
Do you wet the dry wet wipes before you use them?
Yes sir
Hiya! I have a stupid question. I'm sure you're familiar with those emergency food bricks such as Mainstay and probably a million others. I just looked up the Mainstay on amazon, and their 3,600 cal. bar has 150 cal./ounce. If you're only doing 8 days, why not just bring those? Ten bricks is 15 pounds, and if you wanted a culinary experience, you'd go car camping rather than attempting a fastest-known time. I'm not saying you should or shouldn't; I'm just asking why you chose not to. Thanks in advance!
I haven't tried them before and I wanted food that I know crave and actually want to eat on the Trail. I learned from prior hikes, if I really don't look forward to eating my food then it brings my morale down. The last thing I needed to do was have anything that impacts my mental state on a FKT.
I wouldn't have thought of that; totally makes sense. Best regards, and thanks again!
Are you using Harriet Quarles again? We are doing a thru hike in a couple weeks, trying to reserve with her but she has been a bit busy I guess?
+Outdoor Adventures No, miss Bigfoot is dropping me off at the trailhead tomorrow
+Outdoor Adventures She was busy today when I ran into her. Shoot her a text, she doesn't like voicemails
Im going to watch this again to be sure but i feel like you didn't include any water filtration, not sure you show all the cloths/rain gear your going to bring and do you keep your food in your tent?
I only ask because I LOVE LOVE LOVE how light you get more than any hiker i follow but cant help but feel your leaving a little out, mabey you boil your water? Interested
I figured i think it was in the last gear video i forgot this was updates... Oops..
That was the Katadyn BeFree he put in the right pocket of his pack.
Any cooking involved with the Even Keel Trail Bars? Thanks
+Brad Holder no cooking
Do you buy your Altras a size Big?
Have a wonderful hike. Hope your your soon to be record lasts for decades. :-)
Keith and Cheryl Ridgway
Go tear it up BF!
You've got this!
The volume of food is amazing! I'd need a trailer or something
Take care and be Safe!
+Farmer Bob 😊Thanks Bob!
What about lunch?
Mio energy instead of Gatorade
This might be lost data but I was wondering how much weight you shaved by re-packaging all the food from their original containers?
I don’t think I checked that, but it probably wasn’t much more than a few ounces. I do it more for not having the large amount of trash to carry on the trail.
Do you do any fishing near a water source if its a planned short day
Thanks so much for posting this!
You got this man! Easy!
Great organization! I would make one suggestion, just in case a bad situation should present itself, it might be to your advantage to add a lanyard to your knife. Should you need to use it to defend yourself, put your wrist through the lanyard, spin the knife to tighten the lanyard around your wrist and your knife will not be able to get away from you when you need it most. You never know...better safe than sorry. Good luck! 🍀
How many miles is it?
+Phillip Strano 310
what's fkt mean?
+Ian Aycock Fastest Known Time
+Follow Bigfoot
I know nothing about the environment, but for such a short and busy trip, wouldnt a tent be a lot of trouble and wasted resources? Or is it more for just in case?
+Spring Bloom There are no shelters on this trail like the AT, no tent would mean no shelter for me
+Follow Bigfoot
Is the environment that rough? I often 'cowboy' around, for up to 2 weeks, in Central Texas. Of course, my aim is to rough it and it is quite uncomfortable. I just wouldnt think youd have the time or energy for camp making on a record run? What tent do you use?
Im largely into 'bushing', as opposed to long hiking, but lightweight and more importantly SIMPLE gear, is of great interest to me.
Did I miss a spork or bamboo spoon to eat your hot meals with?
+Kathy Jenner I didn't show it, I have the toaks long handled spoon. For my full gear list check out this video:
ua-cam.com/video/WnU11F4XNIQ/v-deo.html
Awesome! Didn't want you to be squeezing your meals out of the pouch! Have fun, you'll do great...cheering you on from Wisconsin!
WTF job do you have that allows you to have that kind of work schedule? I'm doing the AT next year, and I'm going to have to QUIT to do it. Imagine this discussion:
Me: "Hey, boss, I need to take SIX MONTHS off."
Boss: "Why? Are you pregnant?"
Me: "No."
Boss: "Then NO."
Good luck and stay classy!
You are the man!
Hike the damn trail already!
Bobby Cobbler two more days!
With all these vids, sure would suck to not get the record .....
+Bobby Cobbler ☺️ be patient bobby.y start date hasn't changed, still the 29th of July.
+Bobby Cobbler Those thoughts don't even cross my mind. I am a positive and optimistic dude
I think for any FKT attempt i would go no cook.
The food seems to be an overkill, reduce it down, you will come off the track with food to spare in my view. The snacks / lunch can be halved.
LokSaks are the most expensive trash you could ever carry. They are throw-away bags that come with no warranty at an insane price. I tried to warranty one that had a manufacturing defect and they wouldn't do anything for me. I'll never buy another one again. I always thought when you pay insane prices you get excellent customer service. Not with LokSak bags.
IMO, that's a piss poor way of packing. Your going on an 8 day hike, the first thing in your bag should be 4 days worth of food.(breakfast, dinner and snacks) Especially since you are "chancing it" and not taking a Bear bag. You don't need to keep taking out all your food on the first half of the trip, you don't even need to see that food til day 5. If you put a piece of notebook paper between each day as you pack them into your bags, you don't even have to think while you are shifting things around each morning. You need to learn the 6 P's. Anyway, that's my two cents worth, Have fun and keep doing what your doing...
That first aid kit is pitiful for hiking.
That's not something I would cut corners on for weight.
An actual IFAK style trauma kit for emergencies and a separate boo-boo and medication kit for inconveniences is a much better idea.
cut wax paper and put between your sticky stuff
No Dr. Bronners
Wish I'd seen this video before you left. Food choices are okay, but you could have used more protein. Also a frame less pack is a miserable thing under a heavy load. All my small packs, even day packs have some kind of frame. But hey, each to there own.
Then don't carry a heavy load.
Watch them carbs and sugar. Diabeters.
Oh man. That tent is so small, mine is twice the size wahhhhh
I mean, that is a pretty sweet lil' knife. But why do you really need it? Especially for an FKT, I wouldn't think you'd have time or reason to be doing any of the more gnarly camp chores that you might need a bigger knife for. Maybe consider sewing scissors instead? Obviously it's just counting grams at this point, but something to consider for arguments sake. Good luck on the SHT!
Oh, and I forgot to put this is in my original comment, that food setup looks sweet! You look like you've got it totally dialled.
+Lachlan Derrick I don't need it. Could totally do without it. I saw the knife when I went to one of those backpacker magazine "get out more" tour that was in the cities and really like the knife. I told myself that if I could keep my Nero under 20lbs, not including what i had in my multi pack then I would bring it.
Same could be said about my decision to bring wet wipes. Could live without them but they make my life easier on the trail and it feels great to be a little cleaner at night.
+Lachlan Derrick Thanks, I feel really good about it. The decision to go back to cooking I think will pay off for me
17 pounds?
We did an 8 day trip with only 11 pounds of food
Mileage is the variable here. This setup was for hiking 311 miles in 8 days, just shy of 40 mile days. Need a lot of food to hike those kind of miles
@@FollowBigfoot oh yeah that makes more sense thanks
@@FollowBigfoot so you only had 7 pounds of gear?
Seems like a lot of food to me
I assume youll be packing out all your trash? Weigh it up for us, when youre done!
+Spring Bloom Great idea, will do!
Sir, except for the peanut M&Ms, "donate" the rest!
Beauty blog zpacks freak show, ahahha
Interesting, no sleeping clothes at all in the pack?? Really?? Just sleep in your gear? No thanks.
WTF is with all the Trump Ads? Are you a Russian Bot? Do you endorse Putin and the Kremlin?
Talk to UA-cam, creators don’t decide on the ad content, only that they allow ad content to be displayed on their channel
