  • A quick review of a pair of boots that have quite literally changed my life. I know that sounds very dramatic, but it's simply the truth. Never have I bought the same pair of boots twice and in this brief review I explain why the Salewa Rapace GTX are so damned good.

I can only confirm that for the narrow feet Salewa fits the best. I had WS Repace, the sole got worn out and I am considering resoling them. The only thing I had problem with were the original laces. They were constantly getting untired. I had to make tight double node ...and finally replaced them.

My experience thus far is Salewa has the best build quality of any boot I've EVER owned. I mean that. I use the Crow for work and the Rapace for hiking. The Crow gets use every single day. They're definitely more stiff and a little more narrow than the rapace, but both are incredible boots. If I cleaned them up you'd be amazed how little the materials have worn besides the rubber sole itself. Although after a few weeks I wasn't a fan of their factory insoles but no biggie. And after using their 3f lacing I have no idea how I could ever wear something else.

Thanks for your review pal. I’m using north face & Asolo boots for ascents / descents (Snowdonia, Peak District etc) which are both ok. Merrell low cut trek shoes for mild. Q - I’m going to The Himalayas October 2021 to summit Island Peak and need to invest in a proper mountaineering boots. I’ve got thin, narrow feet (size 11 uk) and thin ankles. Would you suggest the Selewa ? Also would they be appropriate for climbs at 20,000 feet / minus 30 degrees ? Look forward to hearing back from you (Tristan) 👍

I take a 46 in Scarpa, Zamberlan and Asolo, and I went up to a 46.5 in these- the inner sole was exactly the same, but I beleive the volume is greater. Fantastic heel pocket and instep cranking, with good width for my 'quite' wide forefoot. Very comforatble straight out of the box, but I will soon ditch the inner soles- they are naff. Sure, you can adjust them, but they have no substance. The laces are the opposite, they are bulky and overkill, which makes them harder to tighten because of the surface area contact of the leather lace loops- they are also too long. Ill be swapping out to some Tobby laces to help that. Overall, an awesome boot with good stiffness and build quality, perfect flex point for me, and medium weight, which is to be expected given their toughness.
I expect that the rubber will wear well before the upper- most high quality boots do. Good luck getting an affordable resole in a western country though...sadly... Ill be using these for 3 season off track trekking in Patagonia, and C2 crampons in milder winter conditions here. Bought in Chile. Enjoy!
Other boots Ive had- Scarpa Mantas, SL, Scarpa Deltas (awesome heavy boot), Scarpa Zodiac Mid (best allround non winter technical and general trekking), Asolo Greenwoods, Scarpa ZG Trek, Scarpa Jorasses, Boreal

Very helpful. Thanks! Appreciate some attention to Salewa for those with narrow feet. I found the Mtn Trainer 2 mids wonderful but the lacing system failed on one and the Goretex failed on the other (within the first 50 miles). Replaced under warranty with the Mtn Trainer Lite mid. Great traction but less protection underfoot and the Goretex failed badly after 120 miles. Debating moving to the Rapace (15mm drop, 31mm stack, 740g ) or the Crow (12mm, 35mm, 675g). Having dependable traction when having to cross wet talus fields or steep ledges is rare.

Hey, great review. Bit late to the party, but want to pull the trigger on the Rapaces and seen some reports saying the rubber outsoles have been falling apart after an unreasonably short period of time. Has this been your experience, or are they still standing tall? Any grievances at all? Cheers.

For regular hiking/trails these are overly stiff, i just tried a pair and was surprised... if you are on rough/challenging terrain they are fantastic, i bought the mountain trainer which is virtually identical with more give but they are still stiff compared to a typical walking boot, i had to go up a size also in comparison to other brands

Right!!! Just purchased these boots, they got delivered yesterday. And yes they do come with a second set of insoles in the box, inside another box. I have wide feet and its impossible to usually get boots to fit. I took a big chance with these boots. everyone said they are slim fitting boots. This is true but only with the slim fitting insoles are fitted. they come with the medium to wide insoles already fitted. I slipped on these boots and walked around the house for 20-mins and they seem to settle in a little. Today 15-mile hike and forgot I had them on my feet, my feet were warm and cosy. My God! these boots have some darn good ankle support wow! and no! slippage on wet mud climbing down slopes. When I got home I usually cart wait to get my boots off these I forgot about and messed the carpets up. Thanks so much Black Crag for the recommending these boots. Theses boots have some very aggresive soles and heel-brake this very useful on scree in Lakeland.. Out tomorrow in Lakeland test these boots high up on Pillar.
Kindest regards.... These boots have some very genius features never seen on any other boots.. Never seen boot with so many features.

Did you do the Cho La pass when on EBC trek. Was wondering how these would manage over that. Was put off buying them as they seem to burly for the EBC but might need crampon boots for Cho Lá in winter and. I then looked at the Mtn Trainer Mid GTX instead. But if they u wore them for EBC and they were great it makes me think again. Great looking boot also the Rapace.

The failure point of the meeting point of the rand and upper you mentioned is so true! My last two pairs of boots failed exactly there, Lowa Renegade and Salomon Quest 4. Both with less than 2 years of age and plenty of rubber in the sole, so disappointed as now they are of course not waterproof at all.

I wore a pair of BD last Scarpa sl's for 11 years and they're superb but I wanted a lighter boot for the khumbu and gokyo for a month next winter where every gram will count. The new SL just isn't a fit for me (TX last ?) so I tried a pair of Salewa "mountain trainers". They aren't as comfy, they overheat compared to my old SL's but the GRIP my god the traction of these things makes me want buy my other half a pair, I'm almost embarrassed how much security I get in these on steep descents.
No, they won't last 10 years+, no I wouldn't want a big rock falling on my feet in them, but I think I might be a Salewa convert too.

I wouldn't be put off, I have very wide feet at the forefoot/toes area, and I tried them before, and you can use the wider footbed that comes with the shoes (the yellow thing under the insole that he showed) and it was a very comfortable fit, but I did size up 1/2 a size so that probably helped. I ended up not going for them as they were too much boot for me, but definitely would if I was doing hardcore stuff in winter conditions.. They're a good price on Amazon right now UK11 so can return if no good. BTW I went for the La Sportiva TX4 in the end and love them. Wide forefoot (but their sizing is very odd) and Vibram Megagrip on the sole is outstanding!

    • @BlackCrag
      @BlackCrag  3 роки тому

Hope they fit you well. If you're not sure, send them back. The last thing you want to do is try to convince yourself they're a good fit and then end up in agony. Yes, I use Nikwax to make them easier to clean. I suppose it adds a bit of proofing and maybe keeps your feet warmer as the water beads off (like a jacket) 👍

Mammut are excellent. They can work well for those with narrow heels and medium to wide forefoots. They're low volume and their cushioning is excellent in my experience. I'm also impressed with the Michelin rubber, consistent fit, and their wide range of shoes and boots for pretty much every activity. Urban use to hiking to alpine to ice climbing.
I guess the best boot is the one that's well made and fits. You need both but, having had some amazing boots that didn't fit so well, I look for fit first. There will always be some negative reviews and the occasional not so well made batch of boots that left a factory but I'd rather a boot that and some early wear and tear than a boot that gave me blisters and ruined my walks. Anyone who I know who had Salewa was very happy with the fit

The phrase "wide feet" is misleading because the shape of the toebox is as important and the width of the heel is critical to avoid heel lift. About half Scarpa boots don't fit me comfortably because the toebox is too tapered. Scarpa heels are perfect for me however. Scarpa have many lasts and in some of their most technical boots (think Ribelle Tech) they use a narrower last and it doesn't work for me. Yet my best fitting boots are Scarpa Zodiacs. It's not possible to say a brand fits you well when there's a bit of variation for each shoe or boot type even from the same manufacturer.
Lowa heels can be wide unless it's a winter boot that I wear with thick socks. However after market insoles make Lowa wide fit boots perfect for me as they position my heel better in those shoes and the wide toebox and high instep are perfect.. None of this is obvious except for trying the boots on.
My feet are 11cm wide, around 29.8cm long but my toebox is plateau-shaped without a steep slope between the top 3 toes (same size) and the 4th and 5th. This is sometimes known as "roman toes" ironically. My wife has classic "Egyptian" slanted toes, an average width foot and she can wear pretty much any Italian technical boot.
Salewa are a snug fit for me but they put less pressure on my pinky toes than some otherwise wider Scarpa boots as the Salewas flare out a bit at the 5th metatarsal. If you have a narrow heel but sometimes feel pressure on your pinkie toes, Salewa might fit you well if other boots don't. Or they maybe be a poor fit. It's difficult to know unless you try.

As a dog walker rather than a mountain hiker Boots are very important to me, both for comfort and their water proof ability. Over the years I have tried many many different designs and brands...Unfortunately I'm yet to find a pair that will last me a whole winter before they have to go in the bin.....No matter how much I pay, the heels and soles always wear through within 6 months. It would be amazing to find some boots that were built for pavement/concrete/tarmac walking rather than just hills and mountains. The dogs only go to the hills in the better weather and as we don't get many months of good weather here in the UK I'm mostly on the pavements which wear the rubber down real quick :( ...They do look a quality build tho.

I've been using cheep boots thus far and I've been looking for a pair of good quality boots. I like you have Narrow feet but as a size 6 I find it difficult to find a good fit (I have child feet haha) so I'll give these a look as I need a boot that will keep my feet in place and stop them sliding, especially when I'm walking down hill and crunches my toes to death. I'm using a pair of Karrimor Hot Rocks at the moment and they are doing a decent job but I'm spending more and more time in the fells so I need to invest in better boots. I'll give these a look as that 3 f system looks like it will be beneficial.
Also are you a professional photographer or is this a hobby. I imagine your probably a mountain guide or something like that haha also nano Vlogs sound good but I do like those lengthy vlogs, much more detailed than most vlogs you find on youtube regarding hiking :)

Great boots with 3 remarks from my side.
    1. laces doesn’t hold tight more than 1 hour of walking. I repleaced them with Hanwag and since then without isue.
    2. insoles are garbage.
    3. this is bigger one - rubber compound of the sole. Seems to me, that Vibram is not able to make rubber compoud that sticks on wet surfaces a lasts at the same time… In this case the sole has decent grip (only climbing zone traction isn’t the best) but durability is on poor side. Especialy on rocky terrain.

I must echo this last point. I bought a pair two weeks ago to replace my knackered old berghaus....things! I was looking forward to the step up in performance hopefully. To be fair, the berghaus had done pretty well, 120 wainrights knocked off and heaps of other mileage but the grips on the sole's are getting a bit slick like! Anywho, step up the salewa's, I liked the look of these and had rave reviews. 1st impressions out the box were good, well made and bloody comfortable! 1st walk in them though left me feeling a little sour. I walk to work, its about 2.5 miles, so 5 miles a day, ideal to break them in. Initially I did notice on wet ground they did seem to be a bit slippy, especially on rock or wood (stile's). I thought I'd just need to scuff the shine off them and maybe get them "flexing" a wee bit. Anyway, I persevered with them for about 2 weeks and they didn't really seem to improve although I didn't have any major problems with them. So I bit the bullet and took them to the lakes this morning, Causey Pike which I've done before. Conditions I would describe as dry to mildy moist, nothing that would have phased me before. Causey I remember being a little scrambly (Rowling End) but nothing that technical. However when I got to my 1st real scrambly bit, it was a struggle, the salewa's had absolutely no purchase. I know its wet rock which can be slippy as hell but I've not experienced anything like this, its as if the rock was covered in black ice! Anyway, I eventually did manage to get up and without any major incident. I actually thought, they're not great but I have got up, I didn't have any major frights, I just had to be more careful. At this point the jury was out. However, I came back over Outerside and barrow which is absolutaly nothing of a walk and had a few bad slips! Then on a very small and insignificant scramble down, something that would normally not even register I had a really bad slip. Luckily I caught it but if I hadn't there was a really bad sharp piece of rock where I was going to fall! That pretty much sealed it for me, these are not the boots for me. Not sure I can send them back now, will possibly just use them to walk to work of give them to my old man to walk the dogs. He has a dodgy ankle and the ankle support and comfort on these is very good. I feel as a walking boot for relatively flat terrain these would be excellent or even mountains with decent paths, ben nevis etc but if there's a scramble involved, or at least in the wet, they're lethal!

@@tomdorazio681 that yellow innards do their job - you can adjust the width and they cradle your feet.
Not delivering upon the "no blister" promise though - had to break them in like any other boot.
To anyone still wondering - if it's available near you - have your feet scanned in 3D - it does wonders when buying shoes/boots online (if not available, you may try a 2D version from eobuwie.pl but have no idea how it performs).

Cool.....but this is a review on Bergfreunde....
Nice shoes, poor quality from Salewa
The shoes are great right out of the box. Comfortable. good grip etc.
Only, these Salewa shoes also break quickly. I used them for 4 days with hikes in the Alps after purchase. Nothing crazy. No rocks. Just on the hiking trails. And the seam on the inside of the ankle has already been sanded to pieces.
That is not allowed with this kind of shoes for this price from a brand that calls itself renowned.
These are my 3rd pair of Salewa shoes in 1.5 years where the quality is just not good. 2x mtn trainers gtx both of which broke at the seam within 6 months. I have been reimbursed but the quality does not change. No more Salewa products for me.

Hi my Englishl is not good, I come from Austria and we have a lot of mountains and glaciers. I cannot recommend this shoe for mountaineering, the rubble protection is poorly processed and the synthetic leather scratches very quickly. In addition, the new model is no longer made in Vietnam but in Romania. I've already complained about the shoe twice and it's enough for me ..... There are far better and cheaper shoes. If you don't believe me ... Just take a look at the reviews on Amazon ... There are enough pictures there.

I have found them to be excellent in their construction. As I said in this video I showed them no mercy and walked in some very tough terrain and they excelled in every way. Personally I feel that where they are made is irrelevant. Perhaps you were just unlucky and had a pair that were flawed.

They great on easy dry terrain but... in Scotland winter on the wet rocks, wet timber logs crossing or wet decking or wet muddy rocky terrain they're Absolutely Bad ,bad ,bad . I am speaking about the sole . Very ,very slippy, very dangerous if you walk on sea side rocks , salt water rocks . Totally dissatisfied. What's the point to pay top dollar for boots you can use them in summer or dry terrain????? My old Simond they don't move at all on this conditions.. yes , salewa it's more comfort and well build but Absolutely dangerous on what I said . A wee cheap pair of trainers can do better on the terrain above mentioned. Really disappointed 😞
