    Good video looking to get one of these for home lab. Whats are the CPU upgrade options?

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 місяців тому

      Thanks! 🙏 This machine should be able to take most of the haswell and Broadwell Xeon CPUs. But right now, my favorite option is the E5-2690v4. Available at my ebay store; see link in the video description.

    How can i connect PWM 120mm fans with motherboard fan connector in T7910 ?

      PWM fan splitter cable? That's what I would do...

    Thanks for the video .... I just did my first CPU change on an old dell and bent the socket pins and toasted the motherboard .....pc wouldn't post..... now a new motherboard and a 2nd attempt ... hopefully it will go smoothly! I googled the "art of changing a CPU" and found you!

      Lol, I hope this helps! But it sounds like I need to make a video on the Art of fixing bent CPU pins? They are fixable unless the pin broke.

    I wish I could make videos where I work, but no cameras are allowed. I did almost exactly this upgrade on several of our workstations, the same model you have there, just a few months ago. I doubled the amount of RAM in the systems and upgraded the processors from 4 Core to 8 Core so we have 128GB of memory and 16 cores for the processing workstations.

      have you had any thermal problems with these T7910 workstations? when i have the fan control set to complete automatic, under CPU load it doesn't seem to speed up the fans as much as I would like. I know i can override the minimum fan threshold, but was hoping automatic would do what i want.

    • @chrismoore9997
      @chrismoore9997 5 років тому +1

      @@ArtofServer - I have seen what I believe to be thermal throttling on the CPU under extended heavy workload. The Dell defaults appear to be configured to keep the sound level down without much regard to the thermals. The fan speed did ramp up, but not enough to control the temperature, instead the CPU would slow down. That may be because the new CPU gets hotter than the old one ever did. I didn't want the slowdown, so I had to take matters into my own hands.

    • @ArtofServer

      @@chrismoore9997 by "take matters into my own hands", do you mean you manually set the speed in the system BIOS? or something else?

      @@ArtofServer I had to set to fan speed in the BIOS to I think medium to get rid of my heating problem, automatic was just too low. Look at those CPU fans, The one on the right is constantly blowing hot air on the one on the left, so consequently one of the CPU's was always hotter that the other one.

    Wish that I had seen this video before I installed my 2 CPU's. I did the job carefully, making sure the CPUs fit. Turned on the PC. Both CPUs were posted in the Bios. Windows started fine. Updated drivers automatically. I think I did a good job. I used a program named Speccy, and often found that the CPU #1 (near the front of the PC) often runs 2 to 4 degrees cooler than the CPU #2 (near the back of the PC). Is it normal for a slight different in temperature ? Thanks for your video.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  2 роки тому

      yes, that's pretty normal. the way the airflow is setup in this machine, the 2nd CPU doesn't get the coolest air. it's usually the air coming out of the 1st heatsink which is already warmed up. So yes, I see the same thing with the 2nd CPU being hotter, sometimes significantly so, not just 2-4C.

    I thing I would do (if you're planning to use this machine for heavy load) - throw away those Dell cooling solutions, they are noisy as hell when you fully load all the cores, and replace them with Noctua solutions, like NH-U12P and you'll get a silent workstation.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 років тому

      Thanks for the suggestion! Actually, I've been thinking about that too and looking into it. But, from what I can tell, it's not an easy fan or cooler swap. The case cover has a handle that obstructs the use of something like Noctua CPU coolers... unless I want to do major mod and make my own side panel... also, thinking about replacing the case fans, but can't find anything with the specs i want yet...

    • @dorinxtg
      @dorinxtg 5 років тому +2

      @@ArtofServer those memory covers are simply an over-engineered job. Look at any desktop which has twice the memory speed (4000Mhz and above) and you'll see that most of the time you don't really need anything special to cool them off, as long as any fan passes air around them (front to back).
      As for the case fans - unfortunately, this is not Supermicro. Dell uses (IIRC) proprietary PWM connectors so you'll need to convert those connectors.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 років тому

      @@dorinxtg yeah, the memory air shrouds are not the issue. the height of the Noctua CPU coolers I've looked at is the issue... even though the case is large, the handle on the cover panel intrudes into that space and would obstruct a tall CPU cooler like my favorite Noctua units...
      As for the PWM fan connectors, yeah, i'm not afraid to swap some wires or solder on some connectors. I've built custom wire harnesses before... as long as they have the 4 connectors. I think Dell just changes the connector type and swaps the wires around, right?

    You do not know how to apply thermal compound. You just put a pea-size dot int he middle of the processor then lay the cooler dead center and apply the screws it will spread the compound for you without all that scrapping. Just my opinion. I do 5 to 6 computers a day just like that with no issues.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  5 років тому

      Feel free to do what works for you. I use to apply it as you described, for more years than what I do now, and it didn't always spread across the whole surface of the IHS consistently The effectiveness of the "apply pea size dot" really depends on pressure applied, the viscosity of the paste, etc. I found the results inconsistent, and eventually migrated to the current method which so far gives me consistent results, no matter the viscosity of paste, nor the pressure applied by the heatsink mounting mechanism, etc. But, you are entitled to your opinion, and I know my method works and is correct. :-)

    • @mikeadams78

      @@ArtofServer I guess just a lot of extra time applying thermal compound in my opinion.
