I keep waiting for the Brits to figure out they should spread some butter on the cornbread before eating it, but they just keep on eating it dry every time.

Actually I need to do that next time I cook for my British spouse family, but living in south England (Kent ) British seem to like grainy texture , because every single family member love the cornbread and I just use a jiffy box I brought back ! One of the kids took a mini bowl full of it. Even my pickest friend who only ate turkey and pigs in a blanket ate it and like it . That being said , it probably wouldn’t matter if they put butter on it since they love the texture like that, even melted cheese here is grainy as heck! Maybe honey ! Or try jalapeños

Willie Mae was sort of a common name in the Southern African American community, in the early to middle part of last century. You will not hear it much anymore, but made a few here or there. Willie Mays was a famous Baseball player, with nothing to do with the restaurant.

Growing up in the U.S. South, we had fried chicken every Sunday at my Grandmothers house after church. I know everyone is biased when it comes to their G-mothers cooking, but that aside I can say with confidence that my G-mothers fried chicken was the best ever. I've yet to have any better and I miss her cooking so.

Willie Mae was the woman in the photo and the originator of the restaurant, called Willie Mae's [Scotch House] (-the restaurant was previously a bar). Willie Mays was the famous baseball player. I couldn't find anything about the origin of Willie Mae [Seaton]'s first name, whether it was an affectionate form of Wilma or not, so not sure about that.
I was thinking Wilhelmina, lol. Wilma sounds much more plausible.
No, Willie Mae is not an affectionate term for any other name. It was a first name given to many girls born in the southern U.S. states (generally born between the years 1890 - 1965ish). Such is the same for Essie Mae, Bessie Mae, Anna Mae, Annie Mae, Addie Mae, Hattie Mae, Ella Mae, Ellie Mae, and Elsie Mae. You don't generally find any younger females with those names today (in some rare cases you may find young women named Ella Mae, but that's rare in the states). Those names are very old and southern.

It’s actually not unusual to have a girl named Willie Mae back in the day. My great grandmother suggested I be named Davealine because I looked liked my father.😩 Thank God my mother was more compassionate. 😂
@@brianlewis5692 I didn't misunderstand the "discussion". The female name "Willie" is just that -- Willie. To distinguish male from female, Mae was added to it. Willie for a woman is not short for any other name nor is it some term of endearment. I would know considering many women in my family have that name or one of the others I mentioned. Taking offense to that just shows your level of maturity. Do all the research you want trying to make it deeper than it is. You just look silly!

As one who has been to Willie Mae's in New Orleans twice and the fairly new location in Venice California, recently, I can tell you that fried chicken IS delicious! Another thing I can say is that Willie Mae's in New Orleans suffered some fire damage in 2019, and they are looking to reopen the main location from what I read in an article dated back in November of last year. The location where Josh and Ollie are at in THIS VIDEO is at the Venice, California location. We were there a few months ago and the food is just as good as we remember it. It's a bit of a drive for us to enjoy fried chicken on a regular basis but it sure is worth the drive to Venice, CA for that delicious fried chicken. I would suggest you contact Willie Mae's in New Orleans before you decide to go to New Orleans, just to find out the status on their reopening. I enjoyed your reaction. Peace. ☮

A great thing about the chicken there is that the breading doesn't slide off the meat of the chicken! Also I cringe when they try cornbread because they should eat it with something! Definitely hot with butter but it's also made to try with the cabbage or greens.
Daz, for Biscuits, it's just as easy to buy the Pillsbury Dough premade biscuits in a can. You just pop open the can, cut the dough in the thickness you want, and then back them. But I think they come pre-cut, but I'm not sure. We haven't personallg used them since the 80s I think.

Haven’t been there so I don’t know if it’s the best but glad they went to a mom pop owned place instead of rolling their eyes like it’s the best thing they ever ate while shoving garbage in their face from Whataburger or some other trash fast food place.
As for the comments about “sauce” I’m assuming you’re talking about white gravy and yes it is amazing on fried chicken. A lot of times people will fry chicken first and then use the grease and bits of crispy chicken breading left in the frying pan to make the white gravy to pour over the mashed potatoes and it’s freakin’ amazing.

There are only 2 Willie Mae's, the OG spot here in New Orleans (still closed b/c of a fire a while back), and that one that Jolly visited in Santa Monica, CA.
Britain created a huge empire, in part because of the search for spices, then they decided to never use them with their food. : ^)

You would love new orleans. Everybody use to go their to pwrty before they started going to nashville. The city has some crazy history. Especially the voodoo history.
I've been the original willie mae's years ago. was truly the best fried chicken i've ever had. new orleans is an awesome city with some of the best food in the US.
Surprisingly the best fried chicken in the US is not from a chicken restaurant. It’s a supermarket chain called Publix, in the deli, prepared foods section. Publix is mainly in the south east and especially concentrated in their home state of Florida. They stick to a recipe so it is consistent from store to store. Sooo good, not super greasy at all and very affordable. I think it’s $7.99 for 8 pcs (whole chicken).

There are cornbread muffins.....and then there are variations on cornbread, like having corn kernels in it, some have more flour that makes them cake like, some use more cornmeal that makes it grainy...then there are blueberry cornbread, and jalapeños cornbread.
All are tasty.
There are some great fried chicken places in Memphis. Uncle Lou's for example.
Like how Texas has the best BBQ. Louisiana and Mississippi have the best soul foods. They have a cuisine that is underrated beyond belief. Cracklins, Jambalaya, Gumbo, Fried Chicken, Red Beans and Rice, Grits, and Crawfish Boils. Some of the best seafood in the world. The list of things could go on... The point is I don't even live there. My first time trying it I had to drive 700 Miles. And it was worth the trip.

The reason it tastes different and better is when you eat chicken with your fingers you also have the habit of licking your fingers because of the grease and that's alot of flavor...
It's honestly not that hard to make good fried anything. You just gotta discover a good combination of spices to put in your batter mix, and perhaps even marinate your meat before putting it in the batter. And then when you fry it, your oil has to be hot enough so that it starts cooking the batter right off the bat, which seals most of the juices in. If the oil isn't hot enough, the oio will soak into the batter and food, making disgusting greasy and floppy food. The ideal temp is between 325 and 375°F. When I used to work at our Knights of Columbus Fish Fries for Lent back in thd 90s, one of our old timers said that you gotta get that oil up to temp, otherwise you're gonna get some soggy and greasy fish.
If your chicken isn't juicy, it's been overcooked. Plain and simple.

Watching the superbowl at a bar is fine as long as youre in a well populated area for that experience and not just a small town. Its even better to go to the city where its being played or one of the cities where the teams are from. Willie Mae's chicken is absolutely one of the best in the country, but I'm sorry it is not the best. It can get voted #1 all it wants, there are many, many mom and pops spots better and I've been to chicken shops in Brooklyn NY and in a couple other states that are better also. But the chicken is amazing at Willie Mae's so you can't complain too much. Plus the sides are really good also, so it's a win win.
Well remember we were Brits at one point so we could get the spices. As our population grew we started using those spices and passing down the good family recipes. And since we are one of the bigger populations in the world and we have focused on doing things well. U do not stay in business producing something that tastes like crap or is just okay. Here there was not just one King that got to enjoy the high end stuff.
Here each Mans home is his castle so we are each kings that deserve to eat well.
