Challengers & The Complicated Nature of Product Placement
Вставка

- Product placement has long been a controversial issue within the world of cinema, and Challengers directed by Luca Guadagnino features an enormous amount of it. In this essay I explore the different types of product placement and how they’re used in Challengers, all leading to the central question of whether the film features too much of it or not.

great video mate!
@@cracklingsoda You’re too kind ! Thank you so much for watching ❤️
Is that why the 3rd act took so long? I noticed they had brand names but it didnt bother me. But great history breakdown. Learn something new today
@@ZachAttackReviews The effect brands had on the length of the film is very negligible, so in regard to the third act it’s definitely more to do with the structure of the screenplay. I hope you’re keeping well Zach ! 💚
Well, Chunking Express moves up my list now. Hope its streaming somewhere. Thanks for an intriguing critique once more.
@@bobbsaunders If someone asked me the impossible question of what my favourite film is I’d say Chungking Express. I cannot recommend it enough Bob ! It’s truly magical 🧙♂️
@@AuteurCinema Well, I'm excited Joe. The only way to see this film in Australia is at a 30th anniversary screening of a 4k restoration, at the Sydney Opera House in August. I have my tickets booked already. Woo hoo !
@@bobbsaunders That sounds amazing ! I am very excited to hear your thoughts once you’ve seen it ☺️
Great video!
@@grievegirl1 I’m glad you enjoyed it ! Thank you so much for watching ❤️
i'd say the applebees date was more egregious than the shot of the shoes. but maybe that's because i'm unfamiliar with the brand, so it didn't even register for me
@@fishtank39 It’s definitely another egregious example of product placement. I’m slightly more forgiving of it as it works better narratively than the On shoes. When Tashi and Art kiss, the branding is stripped away on the billboards, before the juxtaposition to the dumpster shutting. The Apple-bee serves as a connection to the commercial world of Tennis, and the characters inseparable relationship to it. It is also placed in a far less crucial moment of the story than the On Shoes, but it just goes to show you Challengers really scaled the brands up to a crazy degree (the fact that it’s noticeable confirms they went too far) 😂😂 Thank you so much for your comment and for watching ☺️
@@AuteurCinema to be fair to the director, the athletes are covered in branded clothing during matches (art more so because of his greater success), so it's just harder to find an angle where there isn't going to be a logo staring at you. i enjoyed the video though. it was a nice little hidden gem that got randomly suggested on youtube.
@@fishtank39 Luca is a master director and I definitely don’t wish to critique his work here. I’m overly protective of the art form of cinema 😂😂 and while Challengers is fine as an exception, it shouldn’t become the rule for product placement. I am glad you enjoyed the video ! You could be anywhere on the internet and yet you somehow found yourself here. Thank you so much once again 💚
really great video! keep them coming :)
@@lofi.cinema Thank you so much ! Apologies I missed one of your older comments, I just checked out your video on short form content and enjoyed it a lot ❤️
@@AuteurCinema Thank you :) This is a really original take on product placement, using it as an artistic tool to advance the story... And the example from Chungking Express is great - an efficient and poetic way to integrate products seamlessly into the narrative. Love it!
@@lofi.cinema I read in an article about Challengers :
“According to the production’s creative team, each of the carefully selected products plays a part in furthering the narrative that over time, the stakes have definitely changed for all three characters. “
And
“My whole notion was-instead of playing down the brands-it would be interesting to play up the brands,” Jonathan Anderson, the film’s costume designer and creative director of Loewe, told Bloomberg over email.
I felt it was important to explore these concepts, especially with Product placement becoming more and more prominent. I’ll be keeping an eye out for whatever you have planned next ☺️
@@AuteurCinema Haha, yes. And it's interesting how product placement can be done in different ways. You can go for the loud (vulgar) approach like Michael Bay is famous for, or you can use it subtly to enhance storytelling.
This really shows that you can tell a story with anything. Those unconventional storytelling methods always fascinate me, like how the most mundane things like production design can be a narrative tool... Every Frame a Painting actually has a great video on it called "In Praise of Chairs." Great stuff!
@@lofi.cinema Absolutely ! Every element that we see on screen is deliberate, so there are many tools available to enhance the story. I have seen that essay from Every Frame A Painting, it’s great ! Amazing to see that they’re back after such a long time !
Que tipo de mundo é esse
