    This is a great tutorial! Thank you! I’ve been sewing since my dear Grandmother taught me at about age 10. Then had every sewing class in H.S. I usually sew from my own pattern or a commercial one. When my daughter began going to formal dances in Jr&Sr H.S. we’d shop for party dresses and so many times we’d find a great deal but it needed tailored or she wanted something added or removed. Same with her wedding gown, which had a zipper and she wanted a lace up back. I’ve learned so much over the years, how to “redesign/remodel” garments. I’ve shied away from jackets/blazers, but no more since this tutorial! This is so appreciated!! It looks great!

    Thank you so much for this video! I used to tailor clothes a bit back when I used to sew costumes, but haven't had to do any tailoring in a long time. However, I just bought a new costume, and the shoulders on the jacket desperately need to be taken in, and it seems so daunting because it's been so long since I had to go as far as to in inside the lining to tailor something, but this tutorial definitely makes me feel better about it.

    Wouldn’t taking out the shoulder pads affect how the jacket fits?

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  2 роки тому +6

      It could. This jacket didn’t have crazy huge shoulder pads & was fine with out taking in the shoulder seam but it really is situational for each jacket. The fun of up cycling & alterations is dealing with all the individual projects. So yeah if your shoulder is feeling saggy or putting drapes in your top chest you definitely need to take in that shoulder. Thanks for watching & the great question. 🎀

    Awesome video. I always wondered how they put in the lining in jackets... never looked at the edge stitching in sleeves. I have a question... is there a way to alter a soft jacket at the shoulder seam connecting to the collar? I always need to shorten jackets up top so they hit more at my waistline. Haven't found anyone on UA-cam who has discussed this... love your and anyone else's thoughts.

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  2 роки тому

      Cant you just shorten it from the bottom and tailor it through out the body so it fits at the waist? Also you can only take out so much in the shoulder seam before the sleeve gets too high in the armpit but from the bottom up you can tailor all day long. Hope that helps and I understood what you where asking. Thanks for watching.

    • @lesleymcneill1403
      @lesleymcneill1403 2 роки тому

      Shortening from the bottom won’t alter where the waistline hits. I am short shoulder to bust point (nipple) and all jackets have the button that sits at the waist an inch too low. Can’t change button holes. To raise the shoulders would rise the waist. But I understand it could only be lifted a small amount.

      @@SewAnastasia I have the same question! I love your videos, and in this one you very briefly mentioned something (I think is) essential to getting a nicely tailored shoulder after removing shoulder pads: shortening and narrowing the sleeve cap and taking up the top shoulder seam. When I remove big 80s shoulder pads from a garment, the bust line and waist line on the garment are lowered because the padding that held it up above my shoulder is gone. So a jacket that fit perfectly in the bodice when the shoulder pads were in becomes slouchy and sloppy, with the waist below my anatomical waist and the bust point sagging below my physical bust. In this senario, taking up the top shoulder seam wouldn't make the arm holes too small because there was extra space at the top for the shoulder pads. I know that one way to deal with the extra fabric in the sleave cap is to gather the fabric and create a puffy shoulder, but I have broad shoulders and puffy sleaves have the same affect on me as shoulder pads - they make me look like a linebacker! Have you ever tailored something to remove excess fabric in those areas and retain the bodice fit? If so, I would LOVE love love a video so I can do it too 🙂

    Wouldn't shifting the shoulder in cause the sleeve pitch to change? You would have to take off the entire armhole and rotate it then right?

    Does this work for a men's jacket as well? I've heard many people say you can't change the shoulders on a jacket you can take in the sides but not the shoulders on a jacket that's off the rack

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  2 роки тому +1

      I don’t see why you can’t. You might need to adjust the sleeve cap a bit but as long as it’s not a super extreme downsize you should be good. You might also need to cut down your shoulder pad if you want to leave it or if you completely take it out & it was a full sized shoulder pad you will need to take in the shoulder seam because shoulder seams are extended for the shoulder pad when drafting. You also might need to cut out some of the armhole. I find that a lot of alterations businesses say no to stuff cause they don’t want to do all the work involved in it. I say buy a thrifted coat & practice on it. Also if your in Chicago my tailoring/upcycling class starts sept 7th. Thanks for watching 🎀

    When you take in the shoulders does it shorten the sleeves

    • @SewAnastasia
      @SewAnastasia  Рік тому

      If you take it up a ton yes it will be noticeable. If you get rid of the shoulder pad and take in the shoulder seam then it lowers the sleeve a bit. The simple answer is that yes it can adjust the length of the sleeve so always hem your sleeves last. Happy tailoring!

    But women who have sloping shoulders want to keep the shoulder pads in. How do you trim a shoulder pad in order to eliminate the "football player" look and provide only a nice trim look with level shoulders?

    • @SewAnastasia
