  • Rammed earth, an ancient building technique, has proven its ability to stand the test of time, but some maintenance is required to keep structures standing tall. Aussie Built uses Tech-Dry® Plasticure in all of our projects to ensure waterproofing for the lifetime of each build, but surface sealers are also effective. Without Plasticure, Aussie Built recommends using both Tech-Dry’s Earth Binder and Stabilised Earth Water Repellent W.
    In this video, we’re going to walk through the general maintenance of an earth structure required every 3-5 years depending on weathering. This includes cleaning rammed earth, as well as how to seal your rammed earth with Earth Binder and Stabilised Earth Water Repellent W.

    Thank you. I have been falling in love with rammed earth and wanting to build with it here in the USA. While there are a lot of "how to build videos," there are not many "how to care and maintain" videos. This was wonderful. Thank you from the USA!

    Just built our walls over the last 3 months. I’m located in New Hampshire USA.
    Now it’s time to clean and seal. This video was very helpful. Thanks!

    Water effectively neutralizes muriatic acid used in cleaning large brick buildings, making extensive rinsing a key step and eliminating the need for separate neutralizers. It’s essential to pre-wet the building thoroughly, ensuring water is absorbed first, to prevent the acid from penetrating deeply into the material. This approach prevents the acid from becoming trapped within the structure, a scenario that could lead to leaching issues over time. Additionally, be mindful of muriatic acid's potential to stain concrete surfaces. Saturate these areas with water for about 10 minutes before applying the acid, especially if working with a structure from scratch and planning to add concrete around the building. Conducting the acid wash before setting concrete on the ground streamlines the process and minimizes stress. While I haven't specifically applied these methods to 'dirt block' cleaning, the principles should be closely related.

    Nicely done! Does the wall still "breathe" after these products? I guess what I'm really asking is the breathability affected in "any" way using these products vs not using. Thanks!

      Tech Dry sealers and binders, formulated specifically for Earth walls, are breathable if applied at the recommended dosage.
      A Rammed Earth wall should always breathe.

    I have limestone in the area large amounts. Can I use this to make a ram earth

    • @aussiebuiltsupply

      A typical stabilized rammed earth mix is ideally comprised of a gradient mix...3/4 to 1/2" rock, coarse sand, fine sand, clay, silt, and portland cement. Limestone could be used, as long as you have a mixture of all gradients. Your mixture can vary depending on your desired esthetics and strength needed.

    How long should it take after building your rammed earth wall can you clean it

    • @aussiebuiltsupply
      @aussiebuiltsupply  2 місяці тому

      Generally rule is 48 to 72 hours to allow any moisture to leave the walls. It is important to use a breathable sealer so as not to trap any moisture in the wall. All our sealers are breathable if diluted per our formulas.

    How often should one be cleaning such walls

    • @aussiebuiltsupply
      @aussiebuiltsupply  Рік тому +2

      We recommend you conduct the muriatic acid and ammonia cleaning process after the construction of the wall to clean the RE Walls from efflorescence (leaching of salts), concrete, water, or other construction stains and streaks. Following the cleaning process, you can apply the TechDry Earth Binder and Stabilised Earth Water Repellent. It should also be completed prior to any maintenance application of Earth Binder or Stabilised Earth Water Repellent.

    I'm in Sydney, who can I talk to about cleaning and repairing my rammed earth walls?

    • @aussiebuiltsupply
      @aussiebuiltsupply  Рік тому +1

      G'day Matt. We recommend reaching out to techdry.com.au for support. They sell the sealers mentioned here and may have references to people in your area who can clean and seal your walls. Any qualified painter may also be willing to do the job.

    how long it can protect wall from rain?

    • @aussiebuiltsupply
      @aussiebuiltsupply  7 місяців тому +2

      It depends on exposure in your area. We recommend reapplication every 3 -5 years depending on the rate of exposure to rain and weathering.

    You know of any good book on the subject you can recommend? You should put some good books in your video and you can get revenue from people clicking the link. And, mate, we are in Australia. We don't use ounces here.

      David Easton’s "Rammed Earth House" is a good starter book.
      Also, "Modern Earth Buildings" by Hall, Linsay, and Krayenhoff recommended for more comprehensive and technical information.

    Isn't the advantage of earth wall to breathe ? Why would you seal it ?

    • @aussiebuiltsupply

      Yes, it is critical that you allow rammed earth walls to breathe. All our sealers and products are water-based, non-toxic, and allow a wall to breathe.
