  • The 2013 science-fiction romance film 'Her,' directed by Spike Jonze, has been consistently praised for its inventive and practical design. He, along with production designer K. K. Barrett, created a believably tangible version of Los Angeles of the near future by developing emotional themes into visuals and then into sets and locations.

I had to use the soundtrack, it’s just so wonderful! It’s no surprise that it was nominated for Best Original Score. Arcade Fire’s Win Butler said: “There is a mysterious alchemy in the way sound and picture work together, notes and moods shifting and reacting to one another like a kaleidoscope. And even in the absence of visuals, the emotional landscape still remains.“

The film asks profound questions but leaves the viewer to contemplate the answers alone. It’s similar to the way that the technology in the film presents the same dilemmas in an aesthetically comforting form, almost like Trojan horses.

Luckily the film engages with the viewer primarily on an emotional rather than an intellectual level. Like Kubrick said: “The feel of the experience is the important thing, not the ability to verbalize or analyze it… The theme, what’s behind the emotion, the meaning, all that comes later… The truth of a thing is in the feel of it, not in the think of it.”
