You feel empty when you dont have a relationship with God. Jehovah, the Great Creator of Being, made us with an innate desire to worship him. You can fill that emptiness with love, relationships, money, things, traveling, work, etc... but it will always be empty. This system of things is designed to dampen your spirituality so you lose sight of true meaning: a relationship with our Maker.

For me this kindof has a darker overtone, it's like a metaphor of being in love with someone who's destroying themself, because you keep giving your own life to them to try to save them but it only ends up killing you both.

    SPOILERS
At the beginning they showed what happened to a robot who drove, while Sheldon watched from his bus seat. That being said, like someone else pointed out, the old woman shouting "You know what happens to robot's who drive" and Sheldon's polite agreement with her implied that he kind of knew what he was getting into when he got into the car. Over time he developed feelings for her, because of her spirit (which the robots usually don't have, aren't supposed to, or generally just seem to suppress.) He had grown disillusioned or dissatisfied with the regular state of affairs. She introduces him to music, to art. To the idea that he doesn't have to just simply exist. That there's more, that he can be HERE. She teaches him how to live and he loves her for it.
That being said, he was on some level aware of the possible negatives of the situation, specifically after the first incident. And in the second incident, she asks if she has a choice, and he says no. He's made up his mind, and he sees it through to the end.
His love was about gratitude, and perseverance. It was about accepting love, and being understanding and forgiving of flaws. Some of the comments I read insist the commenter "would never be that stupid" and that "love has limits", which are both true to some extent, but misses the point of the movie, I think. If Sheldon had asked her to change, if he had tried to control her, she wouldn't be the person he fell in love with. It may have been more responsible to walk away, but then Robot-God knows what would have happened to her, and he couldn't accept that, nor could he accept simply dismissing this new found hunger for life he had never known before.
And to those who say with full conviction that they will "never be that stupid", I truly feel sorry for you.
And I know what you're thinking: "But what does he get out of it?"
Well, firstly, he found a new way to look at life. And secondly, the story isn't over. The movie itself doesn't speak to her love of him, but it's hinted at towards the end when the taxi pulls up.
She's no longer driving. She in turn, has learned something about life from Sheldon, and we simply don't know what the future holds for them. If he had tried to force her to change all would have been lost.
And they live happily ever after, or something.
    tl;dr
She has to prove to the world she's alive (I'm Here!), and in the process teaches him how to live. He loves her for it, and wouldn't change her for anything, because doing so would take away the very thing he loves. When she finds herself in trouble, he steps in to save her (I'm Here!), and continues to do so, out of love, at his own peril. In the end, she may or may not have learned a lesson, but that's for another short film.

Also could add the thing about she getting into trouble and he lending his parts of body to her: she gradually becomes sort of his way - ending up that they both just have their own minds, but to bodies, he's got none after being there, and she's lost a lot of herself as she was in the beginning. I guess he didn't plan to but he's changed her anyways.

He cant buy body parts coz its representative of love. Once you give love, you cant just buy a new one, or just take it back. You become one with the person you love. You give your own. Theres no "fix" in love. But there is "loving what's broken". Thats what this is about.

He wasn't a fool. She wasn't using him or a "taker." He didn't have to "give his all for love," because he was doing it for HIS LOVE for her. It's a difference. Most people don't reach this level of intimacy to even understand it. Limbs are nothing to give when he would have lost her soul. He was still happy, just as a head. They looked so in love, and he didn't hesitant to tell the doctor "yes." Just as he did throughout the film. Love is patient, persistent, and everlasting when it's genuine and pure.
& She also showed him how to live! He was so monotone & repetitive on his own. She took him out in nature, to a concert, a kickback, added color in his home (w/ the "be back" note), had him meet new people, and she had this warming, comforting energy. He never met that before. As we seen, he was quite quiet, innocent. They were a great match & Everytime he gave her a limb, she valued it. At the end, she took a cab.

This is supposed to be based off of Shel Silvertein's Giving Tree, which is about a tree that gives all of it's branches and apples to a boy that it loves. in the end, the tree has given so much there's only a stump left, but the tree offers it to the boy (who is an old man now) to sit down on
Sheldon represents the tree and the female robot is the boy, Sheldon gives everything to her without asking for anything in return; it's about unconditional love

In a nutshell, sometimes we sacrifice so much of who we are in a relationship, that we lose ourselves. This really hit home to me, because I've seen this happen time, and time again. Givers need to set limits, because takers have no limits. That's just what I got out of it. Great, moving, and thought provoking short film!

+neal kelly thats exactly what I walked away from this short film with... that he had so much to give, he gave all of himself to essentially not the best person.... though fun etc she deprived him of himself.. the innate things he needed.. leaving him wounded and less than his original self was to begin with..
in the end... she has all of him...... and he has none of him......

    • @MediaFilter
      @MediaFilter 8 років тому +12

+neal kelly You're right of course. But there is something more going on between them, something unquantifiable. The way the make each other feel is a kind of deep eternal peace that they won't find anywhere else. Have you experienced that? Not many people can make you just feel... Right. Feels like forever. Finally at peace. I like to think that's the reason he gives to her of his own body. Also, that's the only reason he can make her accept the leg when she is trying to refuse it... she believes in his dream (an artifact of his soul) so totally that she cannot, out of love, refuse to let him give the leg to her. And the last accident... well, that wasn't her choice. She should have been dead anyway - you don't suffer an accident like that in order to take from another person. But by then she was lights out and couldn't refuse, and he could. So he did.

      Who hustles and scores

But she says, beat off, creep
One night they spot you on the street in your skivvies
      Trying to sell your shoes
You tell them who you are
      But they nail you
      Then she happens by

This is a movie disguised as a love story but its not. She has self destructive qualities and he was hopeless and unconditionally in love with her. The ending made me so sad for him. Sometimes you give and give to the other person until theres nothing left of you to give. I get that shes full of life but she was living recklessly and poor guy just didnt see that. He was just so happy to feel "alive."( Side note mostly every project AG does makes me cry. Like what the hell Andrew Garfield! Stop making me cry)

After listening to it MULTIPLE times and watching the film twice, I can assuringly say I'm very glad with my purchase. It's a great film with a very deep and meaningful theme, and has become one of my favorite vinyls in my collection.

Throughout this I wondered where the Philosophy lies but I believe you have to watch it until the end to take your own philosophical standpoint.
As I watched I couldnt help but to think the first time he gave his limb she respected that but also saw weakness in him. A weakness in him that was obvious ( atleast to me) from their first encounter with each other. As the story progressed I started to think the theme was that we'd give our all to the people we cared about but that changed. In my perspective the female robot was selfish and the male a fool.
His lack of companionship made him willing to give up his all until he was just a robot head just to make sure that she would be ok and the female robot kept receiving without any real objections. That is not love. One is receiving while the other is suffering. It is unclear if she is conscious of what is actually going on with the male robot but the weakness I saw was that he'd do anything for that sense of fulfillment, he was desperate. The female robot stated that "this usually doesn't happen often". If it doesn't happen often then that means it happened before and I'm saying possibly happened before she lost her arm at the club. With that being said it raises the question what if she initiated the interaction with him because she knew he was vulnerable and would do anything she needed him to just to keep her around and happy. Was his sacrifice worth it? Is dying worth your love ones living ?
    God I Love Philosophy

There is truth in your words. Whether she was deliberate in her actions or merely compelled by her own insecurities, the story can be seen from different perspectives. Sacrificial love is indeed a noble thing, but upon reflection, it's also a tale of vulnerability and need. Ultimately he remained happy unto the end, but did she understand the depth of his sacrifice? Hope would suggest she could. Reality may reveal something else.

I am in the same kind of relationship as the male robot. My lady had her fist brain aneurism nine years ago then another one, after that her short term memory went and her eyes now no longer focus right. Her control of her hands went next. Two operations so far to fix that and the list goes on and on. I have had to give up my painting, street preforming, going out with friends and all most ever thing that made me, me. I work now cleaning up junk and garbage from houses, yards or apartment that people (pigs) have left behind. Its dirt, smelly and stomach turning work. But I LOVE her so I gave up my life for her, I understand the male robot.

*DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE FINISHED WATCHING THE FILM*
Well I see a "Male" robot who is not satisfied with his own life, Not stimulated by his environment nor by himself he is in my sense to me, a lethargic spirit. His meeting with that group of crazies did not deter him....they were attractive to him for me lacking a better word.
The "female" robot is obnoxious chaos in my view, a entity which seeks joy at any-pace non malicious (seemingly) in its agenda, at the expense on itself and others.
...She essentially "free's" him or he seeks that in her, take your pick.
The Self-sacrificing male robot....I considered him a lost cause due to the 3rd sacrifice of his parts...seemingly there are no replacements in this world...
His "love" for an entity which could not regulate its own impulses for self destruction outclassed all the logic that would steady the most balanced of all of us.
Not only was he "sick" so was she, His Obsessive love was non logical on all fronts. A relationship where one gains all while the other Suffers to the loss of electricity, circuitry, and core.
I deem this meeting a catastrophe. Had he possessed a drive to be driven and innovative in his approach to life...and a little bit of true friendship, Meaning balanced friends. I'm sure this guy would have turned out fine on his own.
Finally, I wonder if she has learned her lesson.....that is the question that has no answer. As for him he learned nothing in all this, so long as she is fine and operating he is fine...And I find that sickening; that obsessive self sacrifice is akin to not thinking, love is blind they say.....But I say nay to that....I'll never be that blind... I can thank the stars for that.
Most of you will find his sacrifice endearing even heroic, Most of you will not find fault in the female robots actions nor his. To the outside box thinkers who see the flaws in her and reject them fully...those who will not alter your views based on societies judgement.....These are the type of people I salute.
This is my analysis..I hope it was not too long... I cut out alot of what I wanted to say, only to spare you the extra, extra, reading.
    I end with that.

Your entitled to your opinion, here is mine.
What the difference between analysis and an opinion?
Analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it. This does not involve your feelings or side of the story as an opinion would. Your opinion would be what you thought of the topic or substance.
Your sentence starts with “Well I see” which is an observation that clearly continues to show your opinions and how you clearly felt about the movie.
      My opinion on your "Analysis."
It’s not about finding his sacrifice heroic, or what the views of society are pertaining to your SALUTE.
Sheldon inspiration was his own, he found it within himself, although he wasn’t aware of it and was going with the flow. What he wasn’t aware of, was that fact that he fell in love, until later on when they both realized it.
It’s about his happiness, and what made him happy. His love wasn’t obsessive and he did not suffer any loss at the end of the movie but gained a love. A love which in these days rarely lasts and are hard as well as rare to find.
He was not blind, and as you clearly stated “UNLESS YOU WACHED THE FILM” Sheldon made a conscious decision as you saw when he thought about it before he made those sacrifices. What wouldn’t you do for someone cared about, mom, dad, sister, brother, daughter, son, significant other?
When you go out, you never lost your shit, like a phone or wallet? Threw up, slip on it and broke or sprained something. Ever been in a car accident or in a fight? Shit happens man. Especially when things are going so right or wrong and when you least expected. Did you ever have someone to help you out?
“If she loved him the way she said she did, she wanted him whole. Maybe this was what love meant after all: sacrifice and selflessness. It did not mean hearts and flowers and a happy ending, but the knowledge that another's well-being is more important than one's own.” ― Melissa de la Cruz, Lost in Time
      I ask you ZO,
How is selflessness in love righteous?
      My answer.
Within each of us there is an intense need to feel that we belong. This feeling of unity and togetherness comes through the warmth of a smile, a handshake, or a hug, through laughter and unspoken demonstrations of love. It comes in the quiet, reverent moments of soft conversation and in listening. It comes from a still, small voice reminding us that we are brothers and sisters. -William R. Bradford
      You mentioned “outside box thinkers.”
To truly look outside the box one must look inside and truly master the knowledge of what is really in there. It is only then that your brain can make connections it normally wouldn't make.
Outside box thinkers, don’t think alike, if they did it, they’d be called a Consensus.
      What are short films?
Short films are creative works that can express so many things, they are not only meant to entertain people but also make them think about the message and the lessons the movies attempt to convey.
Some may get it, some may not, and some may keep an open mind, and think OUTSIDE THE BOX and actually comprehend the subject matter without ignorance.

You mentioned “love is blind they say.....But I say nay to that....I'll never be that blind... I can thank the stars for that.”

Rin zler Whoa, Calm down ....You seem a bit agitated - Something in your past?
Don't be so Nit-picky/On the offense you'll drive people away.
I can honestly say I will never be that Crazily in love. It will NEVER happen. Everything Needs limits EVEN *LOVE*
"Opinion" Or "Analysis" Same Difference, In my thoughts if I make it so. This is the internet I can choose to start sentences any-which way I like. Grammar is important.... however....I'm not trying to please the masses or the Zealous defenders of the English language.
Eloquent always by the book misers can take a leap of faith off a cliff for all I care.
I wont agree or disagree with what you say because we all have our thoughts on the matter...So Analyze and correct me with ALL your self righteous fury!!!
The Male in my view was a COMPLETE tool, The Female... Disaster given robotic form. Its also in my view that he did not need her (Debatable). He needed a healthy balanced friendship, a change of environment and some good ole self motivation.
Last time I checked outside box thinkers sometimes meet those who DO think like they do. No one is 100% unique - You are bound to find someone on this planet who thinks like you do in some small/large way, language barriers or not. There are no true Monopolies in this world.
Society by large disapproves and suppresses of anything that deviates from the norm, MOST will not get it, Some keep an open-mind, Only a few think outside the box.
