You feel empty when you dont have a relationship with God. Jehovah, the Great Creator of Being, made us with an innate desire to worship him. You can fill that emptiness with love, relationships, money, things, traveling, work, etc... but it will always be empty. This system of things is designed to dampen your spirituality so you lose sight of true meaning: a relationship with our Maker.
For me this kindof has a darker overtone, it's like a metaphor of being in love with someone who's destroying themself, because you keep giving your own life to them to try to save them but it only ends up killing you both.
SPOILERS At the beginning they showed what happened to a robot who drove, while Sheldon watched from his bus seat. That being said, like someone else pointed out, the old woman shouting "You know what happens to robot's who drive" and Sheldon's polite agreement with her implied that he kind of knew what he was getting into when he got into the car. Over time he developed feelings for her, because of her spirit (which the robots usually don't have, aren't supposed to, or generally just seem to suppress.) He had grown disillusioned or dissatisfied with the regular state of affairs. She introduces him to music, to art. To the idea that he doesn't have to just simply exist. That there's more, that he can be HERE. She teaches him how to live and he loves her for it. That being said, he was on some level aware of the possible negatives of the situation, specifically after the first incident. And in the second incident, she asks if she has a choice, and he says no. He's made up his mind, and he sees it through to the end. His love was about gratitude, and perseverance. It was about accepting love, and being understanding and forgiving of flaws. Some of the comments I read insist the commenter "would never be that stupid" and that "love has limits", which are both true to some extent, but misses the point of the movie, I think. If Sheldon had asked her to change, if he had tried to control her, she wouldn't be the person he fell in love with. It may have been more responsible to walk away, but then Robot-God knows what would have happened to her, and he couldn't accept that, nor could he accept simply dismissing this new found hunger for life he had never known before. And to those who say with full conviction that they will "never be that stupid", I truly feel sorry for you. And I know what you're thinking: "But what does he get out of it?" Well, firstly, he found a new way to look at life. And secondly, the story isn't over. The movie itself doesn't speak to her love of him, but it's hinted at towards the end when the taxi pulls up. She's no longer driving. She in turn, has learned something about life from Sheldon, and we simply don't know what the future holds for them. If he had tried to force her to change all would have been lost. And they live happily ever after, or something. tl;dr She has to prove to the world she's alive (I'm Here!), and in the process teaches him how to live. He loves her for it, and wouldn't change her for anything, because doing so would take away the very thing he loves. When she finds herself in trouble, he steps in to save her (I'm Here!), and continues to do so, out of love, at his own peril. In the end, she may or may not have learned a lesson, but that's for another short film.
Also could add the thing about she getting into trouble and he lending his parts of body to her: she gradually becomes sort of his way - ending up that they both just have their own minds, but to bodies, he's got none after being there, and she's lost a lot of herself as she was in the beginning. I guess he didn't plan to but he's changed her anyways.
Obviously, this film is trying to portray is love, but most people don't know what love really is. Love is dedication, love is patience, love is holding on through the hardships. Love isn't some infatuation. Real love lasts a life time.
Love is: A hit of oxytocin, nothing more, nothing less. Your kind of "love" is the love in this short film, imaginary. _The best you can hope for is friends for life._
tell me about it. Actually, if you think about it, I think that robot has a better love life than almost anybody. When have you been in a relationship where the guy would give up his whole clunky square man body for the girl and she would accept it and carry his head around still loving him?
He cant buy body parts coz its representative of love. Once you give love, you cant just buy a new one, or just take it back. You become one with the person you love. You give your own. Theres no "fix" in love. But there is "loving what's broken". Thats what this is about.
He wasn't a fool. She wasn't using him or a "taker." He didn't have to "give his all for love," because he was doing it for HIS LOVE for her. It's a difference. Most people don't reach this level of intimacy to even understand it. Limbs are nothing to give when he would have lost her soul. He was still happy, just as a head. They looked so in love, and he didn't hesitant to tell the doctor "yes." Just as he did throughout the film. Love is patient, persistent, and everlasting when it's genuine and pure. & She also showed him how to live! He was so monotone & repetitive on his own. She took him out in nature, to a concert, a kickback, added color in his home (w/ the "be back" note), had him meet new people, and she had this warming, comforting energy. He never met that before. As we seen, he was quite quiet, innocent. They were a great match & Everytime he gave her a limb, she valued it. At the end, she took a cab.
This is supposed to be based off of Shel Silvertein's Giving Tree, which is about a tree that gives all of it's branches and apples to a boy that it loves. in the end, the tree has given so much there's only a stump left, but the tree offers it to the boy (who is an old man now) to sit down on Sheldon represents the tree and the female robot is the boy, Sheldon gives everything to her without asking for anything in return; it's about unconditional love
I wonder if it's some kind of reference to the tree stump in "her" (sad winter scene). I have a feeling i'm missing something to do with that tree stump, this might be it thanks :)
In a nutshell, sometimes we sacrifice so much of who we are in a relationship, that we lose ourselves. This really hit home to me, because I've seen this happen time, and time again. Givers need to set limits, because takers have no limits. That's just what I got out of it. Great, moving, and thought provoking short film!
he would sacrifice anything for their love but I feel that she has a dark story that hasn't been told which gives her a irresponsible self destructing lifestyle and he will sacrifice more and more until her love will unknowingly drain him physically and emotionally till he has nothing left sometimes love just isn't enough
+neal kelly thats exactly what I walked away from this short film with... that he had so much to give, he gave all of himself to essentially not the best person.... though fun etc she deprived him of himself.. the innate things he needed.. leaving him wounded and less than his original self was to begin with.. in the end... she has all of him...... and he has none of him......
+neal kelly You're right of course. But there is something more going on between them, something unquantifiable. The way the make each other feel is a kind of deep eternal peace that they won't find anywhere else. Have you experienced that? Not many people can make you just feel... Right. Feels like forever. Finally at peace. I like to think that's the reason he gives to her of his own body. Also, that's the only reason he can make her accept the leg when she is trying to refuse it... she believes in his dream (an artifact of his soul) so totally that she cannot, out of love, refuse to let him give the leg to her. And the last accident... well, that wasn't her choice. She should have been dead anyway - you don't suffer an accident like that in order to take from another person. But by then she was lights out and couldn't refuse, and he could. So he did.

This is a movie disguised as a love story but its not. She has self destructive qualities and he was hopeless and unconditionally in love with her. The ending made me so sad for him. Sometimes you give and give to the other person until theres nothing left of you to give. I get that shes full of life but she was living recklessly and poor guy just didnt see that. He was just so happy to feel "alive."( Side note mostly every project AG does makes me cry. Like what the hell Andrew Garfield! Stop making me cry)
I love this short film. It's been years since I've seen it and it's beautiful. I can't wait to watch Her. I feel like those who like this would also enjoy The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
OMFG, thank you sooo much for reminding me of that wonderful movie. Our teacher showed us that in Pyschology and I loved it. Can't believe I forgot about it
I feel like this was a story about bad, toxic relationships but everyone in the comments section is all teary eyed and emotional so ill just go back home
***** Interesting, I overlooked your comment. Apologize for the tardiness of my reply. Anyway, I really can't help but think how lonely you must feel inside. As for me, I really do feel bad for you. Must be a rather dark life you lead with no feeling and just meandering along in your life and not really feeling anything. Sorry Swastik. I hope you find love one day.
Yeah, this kinda confused me. I would think that a robot would be able to buy a spare arm or leg, or a whole replacement body if needed. And if Sheldon has a whole bunch of spare replacement parts, then where did he get them from? Maybe they didn't have enough money to pay for a replacement...

Did anyone notice that the song for the teenagers in the car is the same song played in the trailer for "Bling Ring"? That's his ex Sofia Coppola's film. They're not together, but their films sometimes seem to complement one another: Lost in Translation v. Her.
I dont have words to express the superb artwork of Spike Jonez. He is a one in Billions. Only a few people can understand his work with its true essence.
at first I was like "this is very odd and slow in going and then I was like "this is boring" but as the film went on I began to appreciate and even love this beautiful film BIG UPS to SPIKE JONZE
Andrew Cogliano yeah! I think that's the idea. We are all metaphorically patchworks of the people we loved and loved us. Because even though people break up or not end up together, a part of them stays with us and a part of us stays with them.
I do believe she didn't wish it upon herself. Like she didn't want it to happen but in the process he wanted to give her everything even if she refuses. Sad but true.. This experience sums up most "not so toxic" relationships.
I was in my local record store and came across a limited edition vinyl for this short films soundtrack. I had never seen or heard of it before, so I thought I'd surprise myself with it. After listening to it MULTIPLE times and watching the film twice, I can assuringly say I'm very glad with my purchase. It's a great film with a very deep and meaningful theme, and has become one of my favorite vinyls in my collection.
Throughout this I wondered where the Philosophy lies but I believe you have to watch it until the end to take your own philosophical standpoint. As I watched I couldnt help but to think the first time he gave his limb she respected that but also saw weakness in him. A weakness in him that was obvious ( atleast to me) from their first encounter with each other. As the story progressed I started to think the theme was that we'd give our all to the people we cared about but that changed. In my perspective the female robot was selfish and the male a fool. His lack of companionship made him willing to give up his all until he was just a robot head just to make sure that she would be ok and the female robot kept receiving without any real objections. That is not love. One is receiving while the other is suffering. It is unclear if she is conscious of what is actually going on with the male robot but the weakness I saw was that he'd do anything for that sense of fulfillment, he was desperate. The female robot stated that "this usually doesn't happen often". If it doesn't happen often then that means it happened before and I'm saying possibly happened before she lost her arm at the club. With that being said it raises the question what if she initiated the interaction with him because she knew he was vulnerable and would do anything she needed him to just to keep her around and happy. Was his sacrifice worth it? Is dying worth your love ones living ? God I Love Philosophy
There is truth in your words. Whether she was deliberate in her actions or merely compelled by her own insecurities, the story can be seen from different perspectives. Sacrificial love is indeed a noble thing, but upon reflection, it's also a tale of vulnerability and need. Ultimately he remained happy unto the end, but did she understand the depth of his sacrifice? Hope would suggest she could. Reality may reveal something else.
It's a metaphor for how girls will cost you an arm and a leg, and in the end, they will take you for all you've got... But all cynicism and joking aside (I'm happily engaged and would do anything for her), this was a great short film!
I am in the same kind of relationship as the male robot. My lady had her fist brain aneurism nine years ago then another one, after that her short term memory went and her eyes now no longer focus right. Her control of her hands went next. Two operations so far to fix that and the list goes on and on. I have had to give up my painting, street preforming, going out with friends and all most ever thing that made me, me. I work now cleaning up junk and garbage from houses, yards or apartment that people (pigs) have left behind. Its dirt, smelly and stomach turning work. But I LOVE her so I gave up my life for her, I understand the male robot.
The story is simple, love binds us together, and the less he became, the more "we" become, and for all the films shortfalls i think it is gorgeous and has me in tears everytime i watch it xx
I loved the innocent development of love between the two, the generosity from one to another because of love. Spike Jonz is an Artist with vision and this is the first time i here of him. All the negative comments here, you should all take a hard look at your pathetic lives if you don’t see the beauty in this film. Looking now for more SJ films
Gio Cervantes I haven’t seen it since it first came out but I remember liking it. I was just making a joke about how I was naive by thinking it was the best thing ever.
The fact that this movie could’ve been just another romantic short, but whoever was responsible for deciding to have the characters as robots deserve all the success man. (I wish more films were as creative .) This was truly a masterpiece and a beauty.
I'm so glad that this has gained more recognition. I remember finding this in 2011 and being just awed. It makes your heart hurt in the most beautiful pain. Truly a beautiful film. Thanks Spike Jonze.
I enjoyed this so much, what a great film. How have I not seen this before. It is so relevant, and it's 12 years old. Instant fan of Spike Jonze, gotta find more of his stuff. An Outstanding film. This lack of attention he gets, certainly isn't because of his film making abilities.
That's what I was thinking the whole time. Like, he said he had a bunch of fix up junk at home? I figured if he can find that stuff he could go through some landfill somewhere and find himself spare parts. Dude, just grab a bunch of spares. Make her an entirely new body.
*DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE FINISHED WATCHING THE FILM* Well I see a "Male" robot who is not satisfied with his own life, Not stimulated by his environment nor by himself he is in my sense to me, a lethargic spirit. His meeting with that group of crazies did not deter him....they were attractive to him for me lacking a better word. The "female" robot is obnoxious chaos in my view, a entity which seeks joy at any-pace non malicious (seemingly) in its agenda, at the expense on itself and others. ...She essentially "free's" him or he seeks that in her, take your pick. The Self-sacrificing male robot....I considered him a lost cause due to the 3rd sacrifice of his parts...seemingly there are no replacements in this world... His "love" for an entity which could not regulate its own impulses for self destruction outclassed all the logic that would steady the most balanced of all of us. Not only was he "sick" so was she, His Obsessive love was non logical on all fronts. A relationship where one gains all while the other Suffers to the loss of electricity, circuitry, and core. I deem this meeting a catastrophe. Had he possessed a drive to be driven and innovative in his approach to life...and a little bit of true friendship, Meaning balanced friends. I'm sure this guy would have turned out fine on his own. Finally, I wonder if she has learned her lesson.....that is the question that has no answer. As for him he learned nothing in all this, so long as she is fine and operating he is fine...And I find that sickening; that obsessive self sacrifice is akin to not thinking, love is blind they say.....But I say nay to that....I'll never be that blind... I can thank the stars for that. Most of you will find his sacrifice endearing even heroic, Most of you will not find fault in the female robots actions nor his. To the outside box thinkers who see the flaws in her and reject them fully...those who will not alter your views based on societies judgement.....These are the type of people I salute. This is my analysis..I hope it was not too long... I cut out alot of what I wanted to say, only to spare you the extra, extra, reading. I end with that.
Pretty much what I thought= There are no spare parts in this world, the girl is self destructive and the dude is dangerously selfless. Good short film though, with some beautiful things and it makes you think.
Your entitled to your opinion, here is mine. What the difference between analysis and an opinion? Analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it. This does not involve your feelings or side of the story as an opinion would. Your opinion would be what you thought of the topic or substance. Your sentence starts with “Well I see” which is an observation that clearly continues to show your opinions and how you clearly felt about the movie. My opinion on your "Analysis." It’s not about finding his sacrifice heroic, or what the views of society are pertaining to your SALUTE. Sheldon inspiration was his own, he found it within himself, although he wasn’t aware of it and was going with the flow. What he wasn’t aware of, was that fact that he fell in love, until later on when they both realized it. It’s about his happiness, and what made him happy. His love wasn’t obsessive and he did not suffer any loss at the end of the movie but gained a love. A love which in these days rarely lasts and are hard as well as rare to find. He was not blind, and as you clearly stated “UNLESS YOU WACHED THE FILM” Sheldon made a conscious decision as you saw when he thought about it before he made those sacrifices. What wouldn’t you do for someone cared about, mom, dad, sister, brother, daughter, son, significant other? When you go out, you never lost your shit, like a phone or wallet? Threw up, slip on it and broke or sprained something. Ever been in a car accident or in a fight? Shit happens man. Especially when things are going so right or wrong and when you least expected. Did you ever have someone to help you out? “If she loved him the way she said she did, she wanted him whole. Maybe this was what love meant after all: sacrifice and selflessness. It did not mean hearts and flowers and a happy ending, but the knowledge that another's well-being is more important than one's own.” ― Melissa de la Cruz, Lost in Time I ask you ZO, How is selflessness in love righteous? My answer. Within each of us there is an intense need to feel that we belong. This feeling of unity and togetherness comes through the warmth of a smile, a handshake, or a hug, through laughter and unspoken demonstrations of love. It comes in the quiet, reverent moments of soft conversation and in listening. It comes from a still, small voice reminding us that we are brothers and sisters. -William R. Bradford You mentioned “outside box thinkers.” To truly look outside the box one must look inside and truly master the knowledge of what is really in there. It is only then that your brain can make connections it normally wouldn't make. Outside box thinkers, don’t think alike, if they did it, they’d be called a Consensus. What are short films? Short films are creative works that can express so many things, they are not only meant to entertain people but also make them think about the message and the lessons the movies attempt to convey. Some may get it, some may not, and some may keep an open mind, and think OUTSIDE THE BOX and actually comprehend the subject matter without ignorance.
You mentioned “love is blind they say.....But I say nay to that....I'll never be that blind... I can thank the stars for that.” Stars among other things is what you’ll see if ever it finds or you it.
Rin zler Whoa, Calm down ....You seem a bit agitated - Something in your past? Don't be so Nit-picky/On the offense you'll drive people away. I can honestly say I will never be that Crazily in love. It will NEVER happen. Everything Needs limits EVEN *LOVE* "Opinion" Or "Analysis" Same Difference, In my thoughts if I make it so. This is the internet I can choose to start sentences any-which way I like. Grammar is important.... however....I'm not trying to please the masses or the Zealous defenders of the English language. Eloquent always by the book misers can take a leap of faith off a cliff for all I care. I wont agree or disagree with what you say because we all have our thoughts on the matter...So Analyze and correct me with ALL your self righteous fury!!! The Male in my view was a COMPLETE tool, The Female... Disaster given robotic form. Its also in my view that he did not need her (Debatable). He needed a healthy balanced friendship, a change of environment and some good ole self motivation. Last time I checked outside box thinkers sometimes meet those who DO think like they do. No one is 100% unique - You are bound to find someone on this planet who thinks like you do in some small/large way, language barriers or not. There are no true Monopolies in this world. Society by large disapproves and suppresses of anything that deviates from the norm, MOST will not get it, Some keep an open-mind, Only a few think outside the box.
everyone's being like "oh female robot is such a bitch she's using him oh my god" except no??? she is unfortunate and suffers accidents and that happens. Francesca might be clumsy, she might be a little out there, but she's not using him at all. He gives her his arm, leg, body because he loves her, and would rather spend life as a head with her than spend life whole without her. Being with her makes him whole.
A sad, beautiful, and ultimately, heartwarming film. Seeing this, especially after seeing "Her", which is one of the most intelligent, thought-provoking, and adult films, I've seen in a very long time, has given me even more respect for Spike Jonze.
+BearWindAppleyard Remember, the dude said (something along the lines of): "I had a dream where everyone offered you a leg, but out of all those legs you chose my leg." He said that that dream was the best dream in the history of dreams. XD (what a sweet patoot)
I like the film it's romantic and nice and i noticed that the voice of Sheldon was Andrew Garfield as Spider Man from The Amazing Spider Man (2012) and that's why i wanna watch this short film RATING 99.9% Thank You Spike Jonze for making this Short Film!
It's based off the book "The Giving Tree". The main character's name is "Sheldon" which also happens to be the name of the author, Sheldon "Shel" Silverstein.
I confused it with: Where The Wild Things Are, but I ask aghain is he a children's author? I didn't ask what he is most famous for sheesh, why do I even have to repeat myself?
we have always feared the thought of robots and their potential danger and threats to our human world. this short film not only depicts a beautiful love story, but also lets us think how robots could be inferior and sad rather than dangerous and a threat. really thought-provoking and amazing.
Spike should of ended the film with Francesca leaving Sheldon's head in a dumpster crying to him, that she cannot do it, she cannot take care of him assuming she would have to carry him around all the time. Maybe it does happen just not right away.....part 2??. Just a thought....
Maybe not, a poor community would have limited resources. Besides ny comment was rhetorical, not to be taken so literally. You're the ONLY one who did.
This short Is absolutely incredible, Spike Jonze also directed Where the Wild Things Are one of my favourite films of all time But this has to be one of the most beautifulest, creative and original Short Films I have ever seen, It proves that Spike Jones has creativity In film making, I hope he makes more films like this and Where the Wild Things Are.

What a beautiful quote 💓 it feels true because I'm older now and empty as I can be. I was never this way before.
Agreed!
From seeing 'Her' and now this, I personally consider Spike Jonze as a romantic-tragic movie master.
Then watch Lost in Translation and see where he got it from
Modest Mind25 saw it, and tbh I was a bit bored 😂 I definitely prefer “Her”
@@modest_mind2526 i love how her was a response to lost in translation
It's crazy that he can go from Jackass and skateboarding videos to amazing films like Her Lord of the Wings
Don't forget sci fi in its realism.

This is supposed to be based off of Shel Silvertein's Giving Tree, which is about a tree that gives all of it's branches and apples to a boy that it loves. in the end, the tree has given so much there's only a stump left, but the tree offers it to the boy (who is an old man now) to sit down on
Sheldon represents the tree and the female robot is the boy, Sheldon gives everything to her without asking for anything in return; it's about unconditional love
Why wasn't this nominated for an Oscar?
he would sacrifice anything for their love but I feel that she has a dark story that hasn't been told which gives her a irresponsible self destructing lifestyle and he will sacrifice more and more until her love will unknowingly drain him physically and emotionally till he has nothing left sometimes love just isn't enough
So he did.
great comparison

You are sleeping [x?]
You pick up this working girl
Who's hooked on smack
Who hustles and scores
That's all I do, she says
She says, ten bucks for head, fifteen for half and half
She says, three hits a day at thirty-five per
You say, that's seven tricks a day at least
But she says, sometimes I get lucky
Once this guy gives me a bill and a half just to eat me
Only time I ever came
You figure you can save her
You sell your color TV
That keeps her off the streets a whole day
You hawk your typewriter for one jobe
Then your shotgun, your watch
A week later you say, listen I'm a little short
But she says, no scratch, no snatch
You say, look, it is better to give
But she says, beat off, creep
One night they spot you on the street in your skivvies
Trying to sell your shoes
You tell them who you are
But they nail you
Then she happens by
And she says, Christ you look fucked
She says, hang tough
But you don't say anything
You just think, what a bum wrap for a nice sensitive guy like me

This is a movie disguised as a love story but its not. She has self destructive qualities and he was hopeless and unconditionally in love with her. The ending made me so sad for him. Sometimes you give and give to the other person until theres nothing left of you to give. I get that shes full of life but she was living recklessly and poor guy just didnt see that. He was just so happy to feel "alive."( Side note mostly every project AG does makes me cry. Like what the hell Andrew Garfield! Stop making me cry)
This short film reminds me of Never Let Go with Andrew Garfield too!
What a gift Spike Jonze has to share with the world - It's wonderful that he's still in tune with his ability to make great work. A rare gift.
I love this short film. It's been years since I've seen it and it's beautiful. I can't wait to watch Her. I feel like those who like this would also enjoy The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Hannah Meyer YES GIRL YES. "Meet me in Montauk."
Lilac Renewal That movie changed my life... and that scene where Joel is a baby is just the best. Hahaha
OMFG, thank you sooo much for reminding me of that wonderful movie. Our teacher showed us that in Pyschology and I loved it. Can't believe I forgot about it
jase276 you're profile pic nearly gave me a heart attack. haha
But yeah, it's incredible. Glad I could remind you of it. :)

I feel like this was a story about bad, toxic relationships but everyone in the comments section is all teary eyed and emotional so ill just go back home
🤣
SAME, I see it more as a relationship that you give so much of yourself to the other person that you forget about yourself

I hope you find love one day.
hmm. Look at that 44 upvotes to your none. Interesting how others think differently than you.
Bad Mako , I heard that, bro'... Some definite leakage going on here...
Why are there no spare parts in that damn world?
Or even an auto body shop
Yeah, this kinda confused me. I would think that a robot would be able to buy a spare arm or leg, or a whole replacement body if needed. And if Sheldon has a whole bunch of spare replacement parts, then where did he get them from? Maybe they didn't have enough money to pay for a replacement...
TheSuckerOfTheWorld
No, no spare parts..
Just feels.
TheSuckerOfTheWorld probaly too busy eating pancakes
Booman they probably wouldn't make spare parts for robots because humans look at them as insubordinate and don't want them to live anyways
I was in this & I had such a great time working for Spike. I would again anytime
+Chad Everhart Thanks, then.Veery nice! You all ar top notch ^^
+L. F. Febro with a director like him it was easy lol. glad ya liked, I did, I thought it was creepy cool & very much so a Spike Jonze piece lol Have a great day & Happy Belated Thanksgiving everyone XoXoX #Namaste #ॐ #IAmThatIAm #ChadEverhart
hmm. NIce, Chad! Who did you feature with? Main Character or crew in production line or something?
+L. F. Febro everyone featured tho there's really only like 2 main characters .. different than anything I've done for sure, it was like a collaboration kinda thing, we all knew the outcome in a way.. which isn't anything new, it just felt different than anything I've done before or since. he was great to work for & I know I've said I'd totally work for him again, I hope I do.. XoXoX #Namaste everyone
Thanks for the feedback, fellow!
manic pixie robot girl
Did anyone notice that the song for the teenagers in the car is the same song played in the trailer for "Bling Ring"? That's his ex Sofia Coppola's film. They're not together, but their films sometimes seem to complement one another: Lost in Translation v. Her.
samantharose you're right it is! And yes, some of their films seem to match pretty well sometimes, they're both very intense.
Spike Jonze is not a Director. Spike Jonze is a Artist.
a director is an artist
Chandler Muriel Bing Yeah... :/
Chandler Muriel Bing yeah, but reading it like this, it seems like the others director are just business man(few maybe), that's all.
really true
and an excellent film director... neither titles should be discredited.
If humans could do this with their bodies I'd like to believe that we'd all be patchworks of one another, and that would be pretty cool.
Andrew Cogliano Yeah that's a pretty awesome idea..
Andrew Cogliano yeah! I think that's the idea. We are all metaphorically patchworks of the people we loved and loved us. Because even though people break up or not end up together, a part of them stays with us and a part of us stays with them.
Holly shit dude, that's really awesome xD
Oh, Andrew. What a lovely thought.
checkout human chimera, it not exactly what you say, but its interesting
This is one of the cutest short films I've ever seen.
Glad you like it dear x
That was one of the movies I've ever seen!!!! He gave her his entire body!! I'm in tears!! AAAWWWWWWW!!!!!
I do believe she didn't wish it upon herself. Like she didn't want it to happen but in the process he wanted to give her everything even if she refuses. Sad but true.. This experience sums up most "not so toxic" relationships.
i like how they made them express emotions... it seems alot more realistic than most animated characters
(atleast to me)
It's a metaphor for how girls will cost you an arm and a leg, and in the end, they will take you for all you've got...
Quite possibly the most beautiful thing I have ever watched in the past 16 years of my life. Can't wait to see Her.
you need to watch some better movies homie
IntuitiveMindsMusic to be fair I was only 16 at the time. I didn’t know any better.
So would you say that you didn't like Her? I just watched it today and since then I can't help but look more into Spike's work.
Gio Cervantes I haven’t seen it since it first came out but I remember liking it. I was just making a joke about how I was naive by thinking it was the best thing ever.
@@BabyBoyBluessss Ah, yeah. I understand.
Fantastic! A real glimpse of humanity-The human characters are void of any-BRAVO!
Simply distinct! A Robotic love story, never saw anything quite like this!!!! Concept Mahn.... Concept!!!!!
The fact that this movie could’ve been just another romantic short, but whoever was responsible for deciding to have the characters as robots deserve all the success man. (I wish more films were as creative .)
This was truly a masterpiece and a beauty.
This was most certainty snubbed for the Oscar for Best live action short in 2010.
This is one of the greatest short films ever made. This is a 31 minute film but it has a lot of lessons to get from it.
I'm trying so hard not to cry. This is too beautiful.
I'm so glad that this has gained more recognition. I remember finding this in 2011 and being just awed. It makes your heart hurt in the most beautiful pain. Truly a beautiful film. Thanks Spike Jonze.
U can actually feel what kind of impact the separation from sofia Coppola had on spike from seeing this and her, such a tragic.
They needed to see a professional about her accident prone behavior.
It is a masterpiece.
Such a great short film.
Spike Jonze is such a genius.
This was such a beautiful epitome of artistic cinema.
I enjoyed this so much, what a great film. How have I not seen this before. It is so relevant, and it's 12 years old. Instant fan of Spike Jonze, gotta find more of his stuff. An Outstanding film. This lack of attention he gets, certainly isn't because of his film making abilities.
AND SHE GOT A JOB SUPPORTED THEM BOTH AND WORKED HARD TILL SHE COULD BUY HIM A NEW BODY Fullmetal Alechmist
Most original and creative film I've ever seen . Absolutely brilliant
Better than most movies I see! So sweet and cool loved it
Thank you for keeping this online for people to watch
is there seriously no place to buy new body parts????
Probably really expensive.
That's what I was thinking the whole time.
Like, he said he had a bunch of fix up junk at home? I figured if he can find that stuff he could go through some landfill somewhere and find himself spare parts. Dude, just grab a bunch of spares. Make her an entirely new body.
Joe Doe
That wasn't the point. That was the only way he could show love. By sacrificing himself for her.
Its okay im here ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
***** The point was sacrifice as means of affection.
I totally fell in love with the guy's voice. So smooth and soft-spoken :)
omg the end credits are an animal collective song. spike jonze has damn good taste
Wow. What a great film. How does anyone give this a thumbs down??
10 Years later, still a great love story
To have someone feel that kind of love for someone else, or to be the receiver of such a love must feel exhilarating.
I watched this in class in freshmen year and I’m so glad I found this again
Even when you can't see his face, Andrew Garfield is so cute
This is the best short film I’ve ever watched! 😊👍 Thank you for making this!
Love is kinda like sacrifice. But we need it ,all of us, because it gives us purpose and a reason.
Wonderful work. This one I like out of all of the other sci fi short films I have seen today.
Does spike jonez have like a computer fetish
lord i completely forgot about this film and how much it made me cry
*DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU HAVE FINISHED WATCHING THE FILM*
Well I see a "Male" robot who is not satisfied with his own life, Not stimulated by his environment nor by himself he is in my sense to me, a lethargic spirit.
Beautiful. Thank you for writing that out. I have been in that exact relationship (emotionally). At what cost do we love our give of ourselves?
Your entitled to your opinion, here is mine.
What the difference between analysis and an opinion?
Analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts to gain a better understanding of it. This does not involve your feelings or side of the story as an opinion would. Your opinion would be what you thought of the topic or substance.
Your sentence starts with “Well I see” which is an observation that clearly continues to show your opinions and how you clearly felt about the movie.
My opinion on your "Analysis."
It’s not about finding his sacrifice heroic, or what the views of society are pertaining to your SALUTE.
It did not mean hearts and flowers and a happy ending, but the knowledge that another's well-being is more important than one's own.” ― Melissa de la Cruz, Lost in Time
I ask you ZO,
How is selflessness in love righteous?
-William R. Bradford
You mentioned “outside box thinkers.”
To truly look outside the box one must look inside and truly master the knowledge of what is really in there.
I can thank the stars for that.”
Stars among other things is what you’ll see if ever it finds or you it.
Rin zler Whoa, Calm down ....You seem a bit agitated - Something in your past?
Don't be so Nit-picky/On the offense you'll drive people away.
I can honestly say I will never be that Crazily in love. It will NEVER happen. Everything Needs limits EVEN *LOVE*
"Opinion" Or "Analysis" Same Difference, In my thoughts if I make it so.
Society by large disapproves and suppresses of anything that deviates from the norm, MOST will not get it, Some keep an open-mind, Only a few think outside the box.
why I'm keeping watch this short film ???????
wonderful concept , great editing , and lovely actor
and a really great director spike jonze
everyone's being like "oh female robot is such a bitch she's using him oh my god" except no??? she is unfortunate and suffers accidents and that happens. Francesca might be clumsy, she might be a little out there, but she's not using him at all. He gives her his arm, leg, body because he loves her, and would rather spend life as a head with her than spend life whole without her. Being with her makes him whole.
Nice analysis, thanks.
Too Late, but at least I am intelligently cynical ;o)
i have cryed so much. this movie as really full of love. very great work.
Good movie, but based on her track record, she's going to need new parts real soon.
And Yes, I know thats not the point the movie is trying to make.
At the end there is a taxi waiting for them though, you know, implying something
A sad, beautiful, and ultimately, heartwarming film.
Seeing this, especially after seeing "Her", which is one of the most intelligent, thought-provoking, and adult films, I've seen in a very long time, has given me even more respect for Spike Jonze.
The best and the saddest love story
I can't believe 63 people would dislike this truly amazing film. I thought this was truly amazing. Keep up the great work
was that really the only option? don't they have extra robot parts in this world? Good movie none the less.
+BearWindAppleyard Of course they could have done that, but that's not the point of the movie.
+BearWindAppleyard Remember, the dude said (something along the lines of): "I had a dream where everyone offered you a leg, but out of all those legs you chose my leg." He said that that dream was the best dream in the history of dreams. XD (what a sweet patoot)
But he could have replaced his missing leg after giving her his
I like the film it's romantic and nice and i noticed that the voice of Sheldon was Andrew Garfield as Spider Man from The Amazing Spider Man (2012) and that's why i wanna watch this short film RATING 99.9% Thank You Spike Jonze for making this Short Film!
being with here cost him an arm and a leg...literally
Its him! Thats why i decided to watch this movie. Without regret! Its so touching ;(
THIS IS ROMANTIC ART.
Forgot how much of a visual masterpiece this short film is.
I want to cry but im in a public place....
Even me too
What a lovely movie... Andrew Garfield played a great robot. It was so touching. Thank you for posting.
It's based off the book "The Giving Tree". The main character's name is "Sheldon" which also happens to be the name of the author, Sheldon "Shel" Silverstein.
Did nhe write: Where The Wild Things Are?
Lesberatti's Place That was Maurice Sendak.
Oh LOL my Bad, but wasn't Silverstein a children's writer also? I remember reading something by him as a child
I confused it with: Where The Wild Things Are, but I ask aghain is he a children's author? I didn't ask what he is most famous for sheesh, why do I even have to repeat myself?
Lesberatti's Place Yes, he's a children's author. He wrote the screenplay for WTWTA
That was strange, beautiful and sad at the same time. Thanks for uploading this.
I wish Spike Jonze would make more feature length films in the style of this and Her
I totally agree! Her was such a spectacular film!
we have always feared the thought of robots and their potential danger and threats to our human world. this short film not only depicts a beautiful love story, but also lets us think how robots could be inferior and sad rather than dangerous and a threat. really thought-provoking and amazing.
I did not know Andrew Garfield played Sheldon.
Thought his voice sounded familiar.
Lovely film very touching , he gave up his body just to save her . 😢😢
Spike should of ended the film with Francesca leaving Sheldon's head in a dumpster crying to him, that she cannot do it, she cannot take care of him assuming she would have to carry him around all the time. Maybe it does happen just not right away.....part 2??. Just a thought....
Why did she have to be so clumpsy :(? The ending made me get a tear in my eye.. he was so insanely kind-hearted :(
Thanks for the tears.
It is really saddenning that just 1 millions people have watched this stunning film
Isn't there a repair shop nearby? Or even an auto body shop?
I think that would've killed the story. And they seemed rather poor anyway, so I guess that could be the reason. But still, you know?
Maybe not, a poor community would have limited resources.
Besides ny comment was rhetorical, not to be taken so literally. You're the ONLY one who did.
Lesberatti's Place
I just watched the making, yeah that was pretty much it. Poverty..
Yeah
very clearly, to me, an interpretation of the giving tree, one of my favorite stories. just wonderful.
i... really really feel this for some reason
This short Is absolutely incredible, Spike Jonze also directed Where the Wild Things Are one of my favourite films of all time
But this has to be one of the most beautifulest, creative and original Short Films I have ever seen, It proves that Spike Jones has creativity In film making, I hope he makes more films like this and Where the Wild Things Are.
Oh shit! That robot-hating woman at 4:00 is Dr. Steve Brule's mom, Doris Pringle-Brule!
