So I really enjoyed this song from Tom, purely because I feel like he's digging into his emotions and real things to rap about. Granted, I didn't think it was musically the best, but meaning wise, I truly respect it. Music like this is what changes opinions.
I think the autotune was overdone on purpose, fitting in with the theme of everything being fake and him being everything he hates. In that regard I really appreciated the oversaturation. I could be wrong, that's just my guess.
@@goodbutbetter i dont know what the point youre trying to make is, all im saying is when an artist who uses auto tune as much as tom macdonald does tries to use it in an actually meaningful way it doesnt stand out as meaningful because of how much he uses it already for no reason
ouddaboks you should be able to tell by how aggressively he uses the autotune, you should also be able to tell analyzing his lyrics when or before he uses the autotune. like in the 'i hate hip-hop' song he uses it in a way to poke fun at the people who use it all the time.
The auto-tune represents the “fake” he is talking about when he talks about the chains, the smile, ect He fears being “fake” while being “famous” He talks about how even though most of us see him as a larger than life person and he is willing to put himself out there and hit those hot topics. He is still just you and me he has his demons and its hard.
I think Tom was using the Auto tune overly in that 1 bar because it highlights and underscores the lyric "everything is fake like my..." so he is using the auto tune to make his voice "fake" as well. Also its a subtle nod to "fake rappers" and other previous verses about fake rappers from his discography. I also think the decision to keep filming, roll up the screen and go to the sink and wash dishes like a normy was chosen by Nova to reflect the "Famous" being fake too by showing that after he is done singing he is a normal dude living a normal life.. I feel like these 2 things are just subtle artistic expressionistic jabs they both chose to throw out there for the watcher/listener I do the same in my writings with placement of commas and choosing to capitalize certain words/letters and not others, or starting each paragraph out with a specific letter to spell something out like a hidden clue to the reader.
Finally somebody who is analyzing Tom's material like me...I think if you pay attention to as much as you can you notice a lot. Tom is deeply personal in his art man.
This was my take as well. Spot on review. I also like the lines about his fake smile, fake chain and fake grill.. not that they are not real, but that hes wearing these to keep up his persona, and his style was never to wear a "fake" smile or wear a chain and grill, but he has too, to keep up with his rock star persona. Great review, and couldn't have said it better!
The Auto-Tune is during his "persona" dialogue. Listen to it again. Its a thematic element to indicate how fake the smile on a rockstar's face can be. This is a mental health battle between the bifurcation your persona can create when you manifest something on the outside that doesn't reflect your inside. MacDonald's use of autotune there is a very conscious decision, as I'm discovering, pretty much every element of his work has meaning

The Autotunes seems to be there not for the sounds itself but to play on the fake shit. I think its there to be symbolic. Listen to the lyrics when the autotunes comes on. What do think?
Ya i thought the same thing i think theres an actual meaning behind the autotune because he says he turned into everything he hates and saying everything us fake
I think the autotune is a stylistic choice to emphasize how fake the public persona is, how everything that people see is getting put through a filter to portray the kind of image that people want to see.
The autotune too heavy is on purpose. He's said in other songs that he doesn't use autotune because its over used and not his style but the song is called "Famous" and the fame is getting to him so he's "joining the crowd."
Man only add auto tune when he’s says he famous and tell people to put him on their playlist. It’s only for about 5 seconds but his natural voice is really nice. I think the auto tune was to emphasis the famousness but that’s my thoughts.
Do you think he could be trying to portray other big artist when he over auto tunes it? I don't listen to a lot of music like this so I could be over analyzing it
Tom also doesn't want to be recognized in public because he has really bad anxiety, worry, depression ect. Unless you battle with those demons and how your brain works against you and makes you think and feel the worst, you won't understand.
He has strong points in this song. He more than likely did this cause to him its overwhelming. Have u ever watched his behind the scenes for him and nova? They are actually exhausted. You should check out his track Hanging On if you haven't heard it yet. One of my favorites. It's very emotional and expresses what depression feels like really accurately imo.
So many people complaining about how he uses autotune in every song. No he actually doesnt use autotune in every song. When he does, it's not aggressive. when it is aggressive, he's using it to poke fun at people who literally autone every song from beginning to end.

Hey crpyt, Tom uses auto tune to fit the meaning of his songs so with this I feel that he’s using it to show how fake things are theses days and it helps portray a clearer picture
In my opinion he did it as a shot to other rappers. Plus how there is a stigma that you always gotta be "happy" no matter how you feel on the inside. I throughly enjoy your reviews!
Hey crypt I love your reviews and takes on these videos. I was wondering if you would be willing to do a reaction of MERKULES bass ft. Tech and Hop. Keep up the good work. Much love.
@i am Numa "Mama I'm a Rockstar" is a word for word match (Rockstar came out before Famous) and even the lyric structure and flow is similair Rockstar. So I see exactly what you mean. I'm not hating on Macdonald but didn't he claim he wrote his own beats and music?
I honestly really liked your reaction and the song. The only thing I didn't like about the song is when the verses began and the beat I felt like didn't really go with his voice but maybe that's just me. I liked the emotion that was portrayed in this. I love a lot of the things Tom puts out. Much love Crypt
I might been reading into it to much, but the auto-tune might be intentionally obvious. To play up the whole 'famous' persona. idk if i'm just to big of a fan and making excuses tho
I mostly agree with you crept. The song made me a little sad for him, I understand so many people want to be famous but I also could only imagine how tough it would be. When we look at people like Michael Jackson, Britney Spears, Chappelle, and many others have struggled with being famous. Even know they love with they do it's not always easy to never have peace, to never be alone, to have a microscope on you all the time .
You probably won't see this but I'll say it anyway in the song if you notice the placement of the auto tune in conjunction with what he sang it almost deals like there's a level of symbolism to it
So I think the overwhelming auto tune meant something. When he didn't have it, he was expressing his own feelings he didn't have it. It was just him cuz that's how he feels. When he had auto tune, he was saying the suit that he says in his music. He was the person he portrays online. Atleast that's how I take it.
Don’t live auto tune but feel like there is a reason why he used this much! Maybe to change it up. He knows he didn’t need it I think. And this song grows on you each time you listen.
Crypt My "understanding" of him using the auto tuning is that it's to represent a different part of him, a battle of conflicts and such. If that makes any sense, just my thoughts.
I actually like the creativity behind the raw sound then overwhelming autotune because he uses enough rawness in his sound throughout the song. I just like how he uses all different sounds throughout it
This was a track off Ghostories that I fell in love with immediately. I've always felt like the auto-tune is representing the fakeness that he hates. Yes he uses it in other songs but in this one the way he uses it, and the timing of it kicking on, I think is the point of it.
Just a thought , Spotify doest have the bleeps so in theory you can overlay the Spotify track over the video and then it solves the problem on that 🤷🏼♀️
I took the autotune as him switching to the on-stage version of himself. Notice how the autotune comes in each time when he says he's famous. That's him putting on his mainstream accepted face, so to speak
My interpretation of the auto-tune is that he was using it more while speaking aboutliving the famous life, associating the fakeness of auto-tune with the fakeness of having an image or having an elevated status. When he seems more naturally, we're hearing the real him breaking out.
I didnt even think this was alot of autotune till i came here lol. I thought it was kinda gnarly and worked with the emotion he has in the singing voice
Everything tom does is all professional. He meant to overuse the auto tune if you listen to his words he stating everything he hates about himself. To me it sounds like the message is that he wants people to hear his songs but he doesnt want to become "that" person that lets it all go to his head and a part of him feels like he is.
So I really enjoyed this song from Tom, purely because I feel like he's digging into his emotions and real things to rap about.
Granted, I didn't think it was musically the best, but meaning wise, I truly respect it. Music like this is what changes opinions.

The auto tune I didn't mind only because he doesn't do it the whole time. But yeah, his raw voice allows you to feel it more

You probably won't see this but I'll say it anyway in the song if you notice the placement of the auto tune in conjunction with what he sang it almost deals like there's a level of symbolism to it
Notification gang!!
Anyone else just casually listening to Bad Habit, then start scrolling through youtube and just start watching this
Either the camera is doing you favors but, man you looking slimmer than two months ago, keep it up crypt
I think he overdid the autotune to go along with the meaning of the song, "everything is fake...."
He uses the auto tune heavy after he says he's become everything he hates
So I think the overwhelming auto tune meant something. When he didn't have it, he was expressing his own feelings he didn't have it. It was just him cuz that's how he feels. When he had auto tune, he was saying the suit that he says in his music. He was the person he portrays online. Atleast that's how I take it.
Are you gonna do a video breaking down your verse in “Death To Mumble Rap”? I Love you btw, and I also don’t have pants on rn
I'm really glad that tom made this I've been saying for ever now he used always say he would never waste his time or money on a chain or grill
Don’t live auto tune but feel like there is a reason why he used this much! Maybe to change it up. He knows he didn’t need it I think. And this song grows on you each time you listen.
Crypt
My "understanding" of him using the auto tuning is that it's to represent a different part of him, a battle of conflicts and such. If that makes any sense, just my thoughts.
I actually like the creativity behind the raw sound then overwhelming autotune because he uses enough rawness in his sound throughout the song. I just like how he uses all different sounds throughout it
I think the autotune may be portraying his sarcasm in that verse.
This was a track off Ghostories that I fell in love with immediately. I've always felt like the auto-tune is representing the fakeness that he hates. Yes he uses it in other songs but in this one the way he uses it, and the timing of it kicking on, I think is the point of it.
I think the auto tune was to emphasize when he was saying this is not me
Just a thought , Spotify doest have the bleeps so in theory you can overlay the Spotify track over the video and then it solves the problem on that 🤷🏼♀️
Isn't this the same music behind it as sleep by call me karizma?
it is indeed
What's good CRYPT 😎
I took the autotune as him switching to the on-stage version of himself. Notice how the autotune comes in each time when he says he's famous. That's him putting on his mainstream accepted face, so to speak
My interpretation of the auto-tune is that he was using it more while speaking aboutliving the famous life, associating the fakeness of auto-tune with the fakeness of having an image or having an elevated status. When he seems more naturally, we're hearing the real him breaking out.
What’s up crypt🙏🏽🙏🏽🤙🏾
Holy shit. He has a really great singing voice.
I'm a huge fan of Tom... this song put me kinda sad
Edit: I don't remember being sad while listening to his lyrics
I didnt even think this was alot of autotune till i came here lol. I thought it was kinda gnarly and worked with the emotion he has in the singing voice
This song was stuck in my head all day
Yo this a deep one crypt I done listened to it
this song got to me love your energy and videos
That "for you here today" in your intro sounds just like Simba's - coincidence?
Everything tom does is all professional. He meant to overuse the auto tune if you listen to his words he stating everything he hates about himself. To me it sounds like the message is that he wants people to hear his songs but he doesnt want to become "that" person that lets it all go to his head and a part of him feels like he is.
Tom. The man. Has some real talent
