  • In this video I show you the MioXM from iConnectivity and how to use it to locate your MIDI devices far from your computer or each other.
It can be used for MIDI over ethernet, local USB connection, complex MIDI routing, and filtering in the studio or on stage.
I'll cover the basics of setup. For more detailed instructions, visit iConnectivity's website.

This option looks way more intuitive than what Reaper offers. I've had many headaches attempting to route multiple midi devices in Reaper.
    Thanks for this!

It took me ages to finally dive into MIDI. Ultimately it took me being a Punk Rock Drummer Dad who's living in an apartment. I currently use an Alesis Trigger I/O with a pile of various brand pads & triggers into EZDrummer2. Not long after that I discovered the incredible abilities of Spitfire Audio's BBC Orchestra with a keyboard controller. After many hours of riffing on EVERY John Williams score I could remember?! Haha!
I'm now a noobie lover of all midi instruments. Symphonic, Synth, Piano, Mellotron...
    Love that Traynor combo BTW.
Just discovered your channel, but I'm instantly a fan.
    Best Regards...
    Cheers!

Thanks. Hopefully this was useful info. I think MIDI is the most important thing to happen for music in the 20th century. It's central to my studio, but I also have understood the MIDI protocol since 1987 so it's second nature for me.

@@EdgetoneStudios the biggest eye opener for me with MIDI, is the increasingly convincing advancement in certain analog emulation VSTs other than guitar amps.
Like vintage synthesizer VSTs for example.
Much like when decades ago, the now iconic Line6 DL4 subjectively gave the "common working man" access to a sonic pallet of delays that were seemingly unobtainable and previously locked behind a subjectively steep paywall?
Within that same amount of time? We now have access to convincing vintage analog emulations of gear that I once considered to be "legend tier", and only to be dreamed about.
Legendary gear like the ARP Odyssey, Moog Prodigy, Korg MS-20, Mellowtron, and so on.
That's with failing to even mention the absolutely jaw dropping full orchestra symphonic sample packs from companies like Spitfire Audio!
      Man?
!The first time I loaded up the free Spitfire BBC Orchestra Discover?!!
      I legitimately got chills.
Well, right before I instinctively proceeded an attempt a dry run hack job of practically every John Williams score that I could think of!
      Naturally...
      HAHAHA!
I definitely regret not discovering MIDI sooner, but it honestly had been practically decades since I'd seemingly felt anything even close to that initial level of childlike giddiness and bewilderment once I finally opened up that door of possibility, and as I am a recovered former struggling addict?
Part of me doubts that I would of actually appreciated it quite as much back then as I do now after getting clean.
So I suppose it is possible to teach an "old dog" new tricks? Ha!
Especially one fortunate enough to successfully turn around and break free of the toxic "leash" of negativity that was hold him back? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Great video! Thx! I’m using an old eMagic mt4 (2 ins/4 outs) with 3 old synths + eDrums. I was looking at a used Unitor MT8 and connecting more hardware, but the MioXL looks much better. The real issue is having stereo 1/4 audio cables for every synth. 4 pairs + midi now, more to come. It’s a mess. Do you have your synths midi & audio connected at all times? Mixer? Audio interface? [I’m also Canadian with a studio in the Toronto area] 😊

    • @EdgetoneStudios
      @EdgetoneStudios  4 місяці тому +2

I ran a 28 channel snake cable to the back of the room from the desk (24 ch + 4 returns). So I do have all the audio stereo connected "most of the time".
Because the StudioLive is a 32 input console, I've set up my patchbay such that I have 12 external mic pres going to Line ins, and I patch in 8 of the synths to those mic pres (the ones beside my desk and in the tracking room). The synths at the back of th room are all wired direct to the desk XLR ins.
When I want to use all 12 mic pres for tracking, I just unpatch the synths.

Its not the answer to every midi problem. Its stable and works well for routing but it doesn't solve the fundamental issue with midi which is jitter. Midi simply isn't good enough from a timing standpoint for a modern studio where sample accurate timing is needed.
