Build Your Own Studio Desk

While I'm still dealing with fluid in my ears, I decided to modify my studio desk to allow for a front facing MIDI keyboard. I built my own custom desk, so modifying it is reasonably easy. This is probably my fourth mod since building it. If you have some basic carpentry skills, you can design your own custom desk for your studio. You could use a similar design to mine, or leave off the upper r...

Ever had a blocked ear? It can be a pain when you rely on the accuracy of your hearing. Also annoying when you can't know for sure why it's happening. Hopefully mine is not a Parkinson's symptom. I'm assuming that it's fluid in the ear, and now an irritated eardrum. It's been over a week. #studiolife #hearing #health #parkinsonsdisease #audioengineering #recordingstudio

    Hi Jon. Just discovered you on UA-cam yesterday looking for help with my Presonus Studiolive 16 III and Studio One v6. I like your approach and have since subscribed. I too am retired and have reduced my recording gear to a useable minimum. I used to have racks, gear, patchbays, and cables; now I have the Studiolive and a Mac mini. I have 2 Presonus NSB 16:8 stage boxes connected by AVB to the mixer, giving me 32 recording channels in and 16 audio channels out feeding headphone monitors, and run almost all the remaining cables around the edges of my room for simplicity. I have six "stations" permanently set up in my 16 ft x 16 ft room: Keyboards, Guitar, Lead Vocal, Percussion, Bass, and Drums along with a six channel (Presonus HP60) headphone monitoring system. I am trying to learn drums to keep my brain nimble as I age 😉. Anyway, I look forward to more of your videos, especially those that will help me figure out how to use my mixer and DAW. Cheers.

      @@EdgetoneStudios no idea really. One day, long ago, following a shampoo, I sensed that feeling of water in my ear, like swimmer’s ear, I suppose. Mild ringing, no pain, but blocked with just noticeable pressure . I figured it would go away in a few days…a few weeks…a few months. It never went away. Pharmacist recommended peroxide and a water Bulb (like for babies) and just BLAST it! I had a doctor do this to me once-like a 20 min very aggressive session. It worked ! Just been too busy to go deal with it. I’m on the verge of plunging in for Super G. Meanwhile friends are saying, No, Mo…but the 3rd Wave desktop and add the ROLI Rise2. Your Eustachian tube is preventing the fluid from draining. It’s collapsed by default so that’s one of the reasons fluid can stay in your inner ear once it gets up there. Your doctor will have tips for opening it up safely but one tip that my doctor gave me was to blow up balloons and it worked. I had to blow up like ten of them but it did the trick. Get checked out again anyway; for it to be a problem for weeks might be a concern.

      Haha. Thanks. I don't think Presonus has put any effort into showing how great these can be in a studio. They are so flexible and there are many ways you could set things up routing wise. But at it's core, it's a 32 channel audio interface with 32 mic pres.

    • @phillamoore157
      @phillamoore157 Місяць тому

      @@EdgetoneStudios Yeah….I could spend a LOT of time on this topic, alone. Presonus had a BIG problem with that for a long time. Then it seemed like they got their act together (with the help of various 3rd party channels). But, with the buyout, I have no idea how their customer service/knowledge base is, at this point. One thing is for certain… There’s nothing like info coming from people actually using this stuff, who remember what it was like to lean the basics of it works. Once those basics are learned, we can usually take off with things. But, users teach this stuff in such a different manner. Whereas, “pro’s” talk just to show you how much information they know. They don’t actually teach, or show you anything (another big peeve of mine). It’s alike an exhibition of their knowledge. Since I have you, just out of curiosity, do you know if these preamps are the same in their high-end interfaces? Presonus was using Burr Brown, then they wen to XMAX (while Burr Brown when to Audient I believe???). Anyway, I was always curious if the mic-pre’s, and converters were the same as the interfaces. I’ll be visiting this channel a lot moving forward. This was a GREAT find.

    How did you attach the wall frames with the fabric to the wall / celing

    • @EdgetoneStudios
      @EdgetoneStudios Місяць тому

      Once the panels were built, I used a brad nailer (basically a nail gun that shoots finising nails) to attach the panels. In most cases, the nail head passes right through the fabric and is invisible. Sometimes it didn't quite go that far and I would have to wiggle the fabric or pull it over the nail head. They are mostly invisible from a distance, but if you get right up to the walls and look you can actually find them.

    • @EdgetoneStudios
      @EdgetoneStudios Місяць тому

      It's close to dead quiet. Within 10 feet of the back wall you can slightly hear a full drum kit. Beyond that it's barely inaudiable. All those details really worked. Check out this Instagram post from when I had just about completed the finishes. instagram.com/p/CVg3AaopSCD/

      @@EdgetoneStudios That's good to know! very good results for timber frame structure

    • @EdgetoneStudios
      @EdgetoneStudios Місяць тому

      @@JBRRecordings yes. Cement structures have more mass by default, but decoupling the interior wall from the exterior wall, using two layers of 3/4" drywall, and all the acoustic sealant really works. It's the attention to details that count. Interestingly, the only outside noise I really hear with the doors and windows closed is if a low flying aircraft goes over the house. It's not very loud, but it get through the ceiling. This is partly because of the roof ventilation and the soft air ducts for the HVAC. The HVAC also can draw air from the outside, so that the ceiling is not completely soundproof. But it's rare that I hear a plane and I wouldn't hear it if music was playing.

    There are a few 500 racks with built in ADAT conversion. A MOTU LP32 will convert ADAT to AVB (and USB). ALSO these days there are so many great plugins that add flavor of just about any preamp you could ever want. I find the StudioLive to be a Swiss Army mixer. Great for mixing live shows while multi tracking to a modest laptop. Their CATURE software makes it simple and reliable. I have a hybrid method of tracking through an old Yamaha recording console into Apogee (ADAT) converters and using the Studiolive exclusively for monitor mixes. Everyone in the studio gets their own mix they can control with an iOS app.

    I’ve been back and forth on this. -First, hardware delivers great sound most of the time. So we think we want it all -next step, realize recall sucks so you swear it off -Next, we realize plugins don’t get you all the way, no matter how many times I tell myself yes they do. And that is frustrating. ESP when we devote so much time to this! -So then we buy a few outboard pieces for printing through . And it’s great. Just set it and forget it, capture back and mix ITB -This works so damn well.. in fact it’s the one way to stop the madness. The only problem: it’s annoying to have to recall things or remember settings that works. When a mouse click appeals to our laziness. -solution: more channels of the gear! This is awesome. Then you route your DAC to the preset, record it back. MOUSE CLICK=THERE. Ahhh.. All is good. But.. not enough channels.. -which brings us back to Console: instead of mixing on the board and recall, you divide it into groups of 8 channels. Use those channels as subgroups. Now you can have 8 channels devoted to different songs: no recall. Just leave it that way. -another thing can be multiple channels per instrument. Then leave them as presets. Say 3-5 snare tracks. 3 different bass tracks. That sort of thing. Print through the board and use ITB eq to take it the rest of the way. -nice thing about a console is you can ride the fader and record analog out now that HD space is a non issue. -the DAW can be just fader moves and only a few plugins. So nice To me that is promised land and so far has me the most satisfied

    • @EdgetoneStudios
      @EdgetoneStudios Місяць тому

      That's an interesting idea and one worth exploring. I have a feeling I will end up back with hybrid mixing in the future. I still long for an analogue console, so if I go that route there will definitely be more hardware.

      I'm not quite sure what you mean by "not enough fader to see the mix"?

      There is a 24 channel version with PPMs instead of VUs just an hour North of me in Nanaimo. I believe he's asking about $2000 CAD. You can also join the forum on groups.io. groups.io/g/sony-mxp-3k/topics Someone just posted one for sale in the Dallas area.

    I’d love for the desser in S1 to be implemented on the board. I’ve got dozens of dessers and I usually do a little between fx on vocals. For my final the s1 desser on soft mode is amazing. You can really dial it in to do the most work transparently. I didn’t expect that to be so good. Anyhow the board would benefit from it for the live guys.

      That would be great. Maybe just make the de-esser a feature of Fat Channel.

    I also do the usb thing back in for external hardware. Not very often though. But I do. I’m not using interface mode. I’ll ping it with pipeline xt out and back in. Works like a charm.

      When I had more hardware FXs I was using Interface mode. What I really wanted was a way to set some Auxes to always be in interface mode and the rest to not. That way I wouldn't have to reconfigure channels for FX out.

      Awesome. Had I chosen this first, I wouldn't have lost as much money on buying and selling Apollo hw and all the plugins.
