Hey john here from the netherlands, special thanks for posting these kind of video's about the n43 engine. Learning a lot sinds ii bought one myself , 3 days after pursues the car i start getting trouble true inside computerscreen oil pressure .. Can't even drive anymore so.........
@@johnvandenbroek9926 i will have a video on oil pressure regulator soon. But could probably also be broken chain guides, clogged oil pickup, oil starvation. Check oil filter for plastic debris.
Whole life i drove used cars but had zero knowledge off car mechanics (even my first car was used Yugo from 80s) and i had always 5-6 used cars in same time and had 0 problem maintaining them ,but when i bought my used BMWs (X5 E70 and E93 with N43 engine ) now watch mechanics videos every day ,on X5 car engine died after just 2000 km (40D) with out any warning ,no codes at all just died instantly and N43 after 5-6000 km low oil pressure when engine heats to 96-100 Celsius but car still run normally
Ive just done a rebuild on my n43. First engine rebuild. Never done it before and very little guidance out there. Wish id had these vids when i was doing it. I think ive done good but the oroofs in the pudding. Just got wngine back in and on box and reconnecting everything. Fingers crossed!!
You can replace a oil pump with a simpler one without the heavy and power robbing balancing shafts from an N43B16 1.6 litre engine. The crank no start could also be caused by a faulty reluctor(either crankshaft or cam sensor)
That is stated in the BMW repair manual for this procedure. However, I think that this is just a standard procedure to avoid any complications when doing warranty work by BMW. In a DIY setting like mine I think I could have used just one rod from the donor engine and all would be OK. The problem could arise if the replacement rod would have significantly different weight than the other 3. In that case it would be possible to weight match and balance them, but that would mean more work:)
@@BimmerZen Aaah. Thank you for the answer. I would think if original replacements are used that, given german engineering, it's unlikely that there would be such a weight difference to actually create any problems... Since I'm replacing 3 conrods I hope this to be the case.
Hello! Steve from the UK. Have been following along with your videos. Great explanations and follow ups! Have just rebuilt one of these ourselves with the exact same issue and alot of help from your videos. Still have low oil pressure at idle (0.6 bar) when upto temp. Everything is new other the the block basically. Any ideas you might have from your experience would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.
You need to secure the engine from the top with the engine support bar, then remove bottom engine mount bolts and drop the front subframe. Then you will be able to get to the oil pan.
Hi I have exact same problem spun bering cylinder 4 and crankshaft to be replayed did you buy used in good condition or new ? I seen some offer on eBay new crankshaft but a bit afraid of them Thanks for vid
Hello, love ur video’s. Could you please help us. I have a 1 series e81 N43b16 and my lower oil pump chain is pretty loose and i have oil pump problems. We found out that the oil pump sensor is defect but we want to know if the chain should be tight or not?
Should be prety tight but it also depends on if tensioner is filled with oil and if chain is under counter tension. Check out my N43 rebuild video series part 1 where I assemble oil pump.
hey man, nice video. my car is bmw 320i n43 2008 260k km. had some low oil pressure that only comes after a 20 mts city drive (not always), at idle. 30C1 and pressure going as low as 1000 hpa. wanted to replace the oil from 5W30 to 5W40 and see if it will fix. if not then pressure sensor + hydraulic oil valve. if not then sump check/oil pump :( is that a good sequence?
I would check the oil pressure control valve first. It could be worn out or clogged. Give it a shake axialy - if it clicks it's probably worn out. Here is a sneak peak from my next video on this exact topic: ua-cam.com/video/SGnME5UyGJs/v-deo.html If that does not help, then I strongly suggest removing the oil pan and checking the oil pickup for debris and broken plastic rail guide. Could be oil starvation issue not just regulating issue. Definetly replace the guides and tensioner it you do remove the oil pan, chain replacement depends on the oil change intervals. I think the error comes up after driving the car a little bit because the oil pressure controll requires higher oil pressures only when engine is under load.
@@BimmerZen many thanks for your reply ! will definitely do that plan sounds perfect I used INPA to see the PWM/ required / measured values of the oil. at high RPM, they match properly at cold/hot no problem while driving, at cold idle is no problem. Only at hot idle when the car is hot enough (109 degree c) and idle (RPM almost 700) i see that the required pressure is 2500 hPa and the measured pressure drops to 1900 hPa. Oil hydraulic valve PWM drops to 20% (closer to zero means allowing more oil pressure, in a healthy engine it should be around 40-50%).
Hi, Are you based in UK? I also have a N43 engine 3 series 2008 and to start my car it takes a while and then it works. However during driving when I accelerate it causes serious hiccups.

Could you also provide some codes for the latest revision of tensioner and other timing parts?
I dont know if the B16 oil pump fits on the B20...

@BimmerZen both with the INPA and an analogue gauge connected at the oil pressure switch using a tee adaptor.

Can it be vanos problems? I am from the netherlands..........
How mutch kilometer ?

Nice job man!))) Can you please tell me what is the clearance in the connecting rod bearings? I have 3*0.05 and 1*0.055. Is this normal?

Radial conrod bearing play: 0.025 ... 0.070 mm
