- Ukraine, having recently obtained battle tanks from the West, is now seeking to acquire fourth-generation fighter jets such as the American F-16. Ukrainian officials have been advocating for these jets since last year, as they currently rely on a fleet of outdated Soviet-era fighters to confront Russia. In March, the Ukrainian air force publicly called for NATO countries to provide them with F-15 and F-16 jets. Despite the West's concerns about violating Russia's "red lines," Ukraine remains optimistic that their allies will ultimately agree to their request.

Keep it coming. There are rumours that Ukrainian pilots have been training in the US in the past 6 months. If Ukraine gets jets next they will surely request battle ships followed by probably long range cruise missiles. This war has been escalating from day1. Remember the days when sending javelin seemed an escalation and Russian was not using its cruise missiles on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. This war is heading in the wrong direction. I am sure China 🇨🇳 is celebrating and enjoying the show as both Russia and NATO slowly become demilitarized.

F-16 is battle tested and reliable.
I think Predators drones would be much better right now and the US got tons of older models on storage that would help them a lot. Beside the fact that training for a drone and for a F16 is totally diferent. Also, with the strategy of russian, that sends waves of soldiers, and doesnt care if they die or not, something with high ground attack would be better.

The Saab Gripen would be the best bet at this time. Shorter runways and a more sturdy landing gear. The latter is better because they are likely to have(rough) runways.
As to pilot training in the U.S., I'm certain I saw something referring to funding allotted for training Ukrainians months ago.

Do you realize how easy it is to learn how to drive an M1A1? pick up the manual and use the check list, you'll have the engine spooled up in under 2 minutes. If you can read you can figure out how to use the gearshift, throttle, steering bar and brakes. Learning to use the gun is only slightly more difficult.
The US makes it as easy as possible to use these things. Now maintaining them, that's another story.

Shooting the gun, see those buttons? see that stick? put the thing on the thing press that button to get the range, press the other button, then squeeze the trigger. (ok, that's a bit simplified, but not by much)
Loader, use your knee to open the door, grab that round, put it in the breech, close the breach, call out what type you loaded, keep your limbs clear of the breach.

What happened to their mig 29? There's thousands of F-16s out there. Tell me why Ukraine wasn't ready for this? No way they get F-15s.
I say give them both F-16 Fighting Falcons which are the best dog fighters on the planet and F-15 Strike Eagles which are more of a ground attack platform, but can also dog fight if necessary. Plus they pair well together, Israel used a mixed flight of both F-16’s and F-15’s to bomb that Iraqi nuclear reactor. I believe the F-16’s were used to drop 2 bombs each and the F-15’s flew Top cover for them and were armed with bombs as contingency in-case more then 1-2 F-16’s had problems or were shot down. I believe at least 1 F-16 experienced technical difficulties and had to return to base.
Time for the upgraded A10c. These can provide good support for the ground troops.
Few people know this but the A10 can outmaneuver an F16. That's specifically because it flies slow. As the pilots say, DON'T dogfight the hog! If you close-in, it will outmaneuver you, if you try to escape, it will throw a sidewinder in your behind. The only smart thing a fast fighter jet can do with a Warthog is stay away and throw a long range missile like an AMRAAM.

Training won't be necessary. Americans has enlisted in the Ukrainian army. They reveal the corruption situation and probably has impact on the current wave of resignations of top Ukrainian officials.
There is no source for spare parts or missiles for Russian jets.
The F-16 and JAS-39 require less maintenance than Russian jets and there will be easy access to spare parts and munitions
I know for a fact* that Ukrainian pilots have been training at Nellis(AF) and Fallon(NAS) since early August, and they probably were even before that.
*as much as I can from subtle hints to one very direct "yes they are here and being retrained on our stuff, but I wont say more" made by friends that are Pilot instructors and officers on those bases when conversations about Ukraine come up.

US has already given it's permission to specifically The Netherlands and to any other country to provide F16's, training for pilots or sustainment. The issue is going to be training Ukrainian pilots in NATO doctrine which F16's are made for. Command and Control is completely different and datalink for F16's even if it is a generation older is still non trivial. The reason this would be worth such hard work is NATO weapons. BUT those MiG31's with R37 are a powerful CAP. With AGM-88's, medium range AD nearer the front to push back those MiG's F16's in the right hands with NATO doctrine could provide valuable support. This is NOT trivial or something Ukrainians can learn overnight. It is hard long term work. Ignat finally makes a statement of training time that shows the UA air force is comprehending the issues. US pilots are given a range of action that allows them to adapt to what has and is happening on the battlefield, so there are several more layers of communications that have to happen to make these jets worth their logistics. I personally think the Gipen is a better overall choice for Ukraine's current needs, but there are so many more F16's in the world.
