    I am really mad that I hadn't given the AJS-37 Viggen a second chance sooner, It is a really cool and quirky jet that I think has a lot to offer experienced DCS World Pilots!

    The maverick screen is very smart. It works like a keyhole or a HUD for that matter. One you get closer you can see a "larger screen" inside (IRL).
    NO: you do not enter airbase code - you tell the computer with 9099 to load data from the Data Transfer Unit which should contain you mission plan. Blinking 9= not finished, all zeroes = GO
    No INS, it uses air data, dead reckoning and doppler from the radar altimeter to calculate movement. You need to fix the system before the attack run (usually done automatically with the ternav system).
    You switch to Nav once you are in line with the runway (very precise), and by the time you pass the half way it will autofix itself (Check planned RW on the data panel with the selector in "BANA" (Runway) - change RW with LS-button as told by ATC).
    The mostly shorter "poles" at the outer sides of the altitude poles is always 100 m. If the closes pole is 5 times longer, you are at 500 m.
    The speedometer has a small tick at 550 km/h - that is the best range speed
    Once you pass a certain speed (about 550-600) the gear and rudder is locked (IRL). There will be a 500 pound counter pressure on the pedals.
    The "km" indicator to the right is the emergency speedometer. It should say "km/h".
    The AJ-37 flew the first time in 1967. The AJS upgrade fitted the AJ with new computers and databuses, and modified weapons interface (1553B databus). The AJS was introduced in the early 90:s, and the SH37 was also modified (sea sentry) to use the RBS15 anti ship missile. Ternav was introduced with the AJS-mod as well as a very potent mission management system for planning and evaluation.
    Not "attitude indicator" in the HUD - Velocity Vector.
    No max reverse thrust below 100 km/h - normally. Easy the throttle a bit.

      who can help me the f16 hut to move the head from right to left to top to bottom moves smoothly but the Vigen does not work this function. When I enter the settings and move the hut down the top right and left it shows that the settings are the same as on the F 16 and when I started playing it doesn't work. I took it upon myself to learn this a couple of weeks ago. It's kind of odd at first, but damn it is fun once you get the basics. Especially when you learn to use pop up points, you can do some cool stuff. The F-10 map mark points are wonderfully executed. The Harrier has that too, but it's much easier to use in the Viggen. It's cool to see what they were capable of in 1971. It's REALLY cool to see it simulated so well here. Heatblur does great work.

    Much of the reason for the choice of engine was that the ability to reverse the jet to stop quickly on road bases of the era :)
    Also, the 9099 is to load the cartridge. After that, you can see your airbase. In your case 9019.
    Another thing, the runway heading you wanted to see can only be seen when you are on LS/SKU so you have to choose that first (AKT/POS, LS/SKU). THEN you can turn the dial to BANA/GRÄNS (RUNWAY/something else) and you'll see your runway heading. Doesn't matter though which heading you start since the aircraft will align itself when you reach about 200 km/h during take off.
    The HUD-thing is actually (in real life) that you'll burn the light thingy that creates the green symbols on the HUD.
    The speedometer on the right is the backup.
    The EP-13 can be set to BLACK HOT as well, and with contrast and brightness adjustments it becomes way better. Still, like SAKER says, we never use the slewing function :)
    The reason you thought you had 1 km of drift was that you hadn't put your safety back on so what you saw was your pylons, 1 0 0 0 0 1 (ok, you found it :D Commenting along with the video)
    A tip on landing is to adjust the toe brakes so that you don't get 100% braking. I think I have mine on more like 50%. Backside is that you can't hold it on 100% mil power without moving but 70-80% does just as fine.
    At last, here is something from the airbase where I served in 1998 you can watch to get you more excited about flying the Viggen :) ua-cam.com/video/hWrsP3hq5M8/v-deo.html&ab_channel=OscarE

      Thanks for all the feedback! I got a few things wrong when explaining to spud as you noted - it was a bit of a surprise to do this video, so I didn’t get a chance to study! Been flying the Piper in MSFS recently to practice for my IRL flying, so I hadn’t flown the Viggen in a while.
      I forgot to select LS when looking at Bana Grans! Rookie move! And yeah, the 9099 I believe is a mission code to load the cartridge, right? In real life, it would be a secret code that changes every so often I think? Let me know! I would like to make a few structured tutorial videos on the Viggen soon, so your input is appreciated!

    I´m having a lot more success with the B maverick variant, the extra zoom helps a lot to slew and lock the desired target, its usefull to focus on SAs or AAAs first. Also EP13 sight brightness and contrast works very well now. I´m using those a lot. But the T Bigger HE warhead indeed packs a punch, did managed to kill 3 ground units with a single Mav T.
    It´s a simple to pickup and hard to master module. Also includes 2 campaigns, 3 if you have nevada, Great module.

  • @CakePrincessCelestia
    @CakePrincessCelestia 2 роки тому +4

    6:57 Wasn't aware of that being something simplified. I wish Heatblur would add airbase codes with a full list per each map in the kneeboard to enter instead of just 9099.
    15:17 Note to every future instructor: Tell your students to map and use the thrust reverser at this point, it's much more efficient... :D
    18:36 Protip here: Since you normally have your SPAK (basically some kind of SAS) on, as soon as you picked up some speed (somewhere around 100kph which is roughly around 60kts, so basically where you'd switch off NWS in western aircraft), stop using your rudder pedals as they get way too sensitive - and use your stick instead. The SPAK adds a little amount of rudder to your aileron input which is much more comfortable to use at this point to keep the plane straight on the runway and it's usually strong enough to do the job.
    26:02 Great to know, wasn't aware of that. So basically the quick method is good for any kind of missile (including the BK M90 glide dispenser) while you should ideally be using ANF for bombs, rockets and gunpods to get a more precise aimpoint calculation with the radar ranging taken into account.
    27:33 As Saker already stated, the last digit is your drift in km. The 5th digit is one you should pay attention to as well though. It goes from 0 to 5, indicating the TERNAV status (detailled info on pdf-page 169, nice, in the manual).
    0 = off
    1 = on ground
    2 = rough search
    3 = fine search
    4 = running, but inactive in SPA (recon) mode
    5 = running and auto-fixing (which is what you want to see, no manual nav fixes required)
    30:09 LOL this is why I prefer to use a browser (= Firefox) instead. Around 1.7 - 1.8 Gigs at the moment, but with that video cached of course and I've got somewhere around 2000 (yeah, 2k) tabs open, but most of them aren't loaded. Simple Tab Groups FTW. Having 64 Gigs of RAM, this wouldn't become an issue anyway. I had my DCS crash often enough on my old rig with 32GB, even with the browser shut down, but it has yet to happen on my new one with the thing still in background.
    33:06 If I had a 2 stage trigger (FFB2 FTW though), I'd map the trigger safety to the first stage. In my case I have it mapped to the trigger and weapon release is button 2 (the big thumb one)

    • @desertsaker196
      @desertsaker196 2 роки тому +2

      Hey, I messed up that explanation. The 9099 is the mission code to load the cartridge, with the airport code being part of the cartridge. You can edit the airport using codes found in the kneeboard

    • @desertsaker196
      @desertsaker196 2 роки тому +2

      Oh also, my note regarding releasing weapons in NAV vs ANF obviously only works on the few weapons that can be fired in either mode. Some need to be in NAV, some need to be in ANF, not all of them can be fired in either mode.

    • @CakePrincessCelestia
      @CakePrincessCelestia 2 роки тому

      @@desertsaker196 Yeah, noticed that as well now. It's been a while I was flying the thing and I'm not getting back into it :)
      BTW I noticed the EP13 controls really help with the Mav picture. Just crank the contrast up to max, switch to A2 to get it to black hot and at max "brightness" it would be completely black, just crank it down enough so the blacks in the center are gone and it's pretty much good enough then, much better than the default setup.

  • @Blablablabla1ify
    @Blablablabla1ify 2 роки тому +4

    Just a quick correction/clarification regarding the engine. It’s a Svenska Flygmotor (later Volvo Aero) RM8, which is based upon the Pratt & Whitney JT8D-1 - a LOW bypass engine found on the B727, B737-100/200 and the DC9.
    However, the RM8 was heavily modded to be able to cope with supersonic speeds, and a Swedish-designed reheat was also designed and installed, in addition to the mods. The engine was optimised for very low altitudes, meaning that the fighter variant (JA37) had to have a redesigned engine to be able to better cope with high altitude ops.

    • @desertsaker196
      @desertsaker196 2 роки тому +3

      Yeah, when I said “high bypass,” I meant in comparison to other fighter jets of the era which were nearly turbojets as their bypass ratio was so small.

  • @mrCyk0
    @mrCyk0 2 роки тому +2

    The RM8 engine is a low bypass engine just like the JT8D-1 it is based on are low bypass engines not high... True it was used by the 737 initially before it was re engined with an actual high bypass to make it more fuel efficient. Ocf the RM8 was built from the ground up and not based on retrofitted JT8D-1 engines (which as an engine is based on the J52 used by attack aircraft so it sort of went full circle back to the strike role)
