Thanks for having me on the show again Anna. I had a great time talking about board games. I realised later that I forgot to mention Mah Jong, which I play with my family all the time.

Thank you for that wonderful Podcast and that new collaboration Anna and Luke! This was really interesting and you match so well together! Amazing. I liked the pinches of humour very much. I learnt a lot as always about these fascinating board games in English (That we call 'jeux de société' in french ;-).
My fave are Trivial pursuit, scrabble that I adore, and chess too!
A lovely podcast. Merci beaucoup à vous deux, bisous bisous Anna 🙏👏👏 😘🌹🧡

I have an anecdote regarding chess. Well, I had played maybe four or five times only in my life (Globally I only knew the basic moves and the rules as a complete beginner) when I played against a good player. So he didn’t quite do me the 'shepherd’s trick' (Le coup du berger en français) but a variant quite close which was basically hardly longer and I was gutted! To the point I came back to the game way later. I have since learnt to play, I love it and I since became quite a rather correct player. I also like playing against the computer (I use shredder if you know it). That is really a fascinating game and recently I saw a game where Maxime Vachier Lagrave (French player n°1 and n° 5 worldwide having reached n°2) beat Magnus Carlsen (n°1 ww) in an absolute incredible way in the final phase of the game and using ...his King (!) ,Luke, in an improbable and unbelievable series of moves! Epic, I was totally flabbergasted! And Magnus as well ...

For the pawn becoming a Queen when it reaches the edge of the competitor’s chess board, you are absolutely right Anna! 👍 and it is something you obviously have to avoid at all cost from your opponent;-)
And yeah, there are cases of 'sacrifices' of the queen that are absolutely incredible indeed!
I know that girl you evoked Luke, she is Anna Cramling most probably.
For the sticks to remove without moving the others, Mikado is the name of the game, Luke.

For the country name, I first thought of 'Ouganda' but that is in French so I had a doubt and after checking I realised it began with a 'U' in English (Uganda) so I was back to the drawing board. As I didn't find, I used a method I sometimes use and quite often efficient to find things. I scrolled the alphabet of letters in my head after the O. and as soon as I arrived to M it instantly sprang from my head: Oman! Yaas! :-)

I suppose that Luca's wife is good at getting right the English words that are derived from Latin and Greek. I'm always amused by the impression I cause when I use them with English people, I come across as a very read person 🤓🤑

Theoretically «Whiskys» or «Whiskey» could bring you One hundred and forty four points! To achieve such a total, apart of course being extremely lucky at the letter draw ;-), all you have to do is place one of these words on the first shot. On their own, they already score 37 points, including three 10-point letters: W, K and Y. But if positioned correctly, the W is placed on a "letter double count" square and the central "word double count" square is also taken into account. Add to this the 50-point bonus for placing all 7 letters in one go, and you're off to a roaring start! ;-)
In French scrabble, you also have Oxydiez / Jockeys / Jukebox / Kwanzas (the currency of Angola) / Ojibway (an aboriginal people of North America) / Taxiway (an airplane taxiway between airport runways and parking lots) / Yakuzas / Zawiyas (a Muslim religious building) / Zyklons (a gas) They will earn you no less than 138 points !
In theory, and in the course of the game this time, it's possible to score up to 1,797 points (!!!) in French Scrabble with a single move. With the "DEEHPTZ" draw, you'd have to place the word « déshypothéquiez » with 8 letters already in place. This scoring record (in a single move!!) is held by an "artificially prepared" game since 1993!
Obviously the odd of performing it in a real life situation of game is infinitely close to zero.
