I could cry because you have made this so informative, helpful, smart and easy to understand. And you don't have mind-numbing music playing. Thank you, ma'am. God bless you.
I'm so glad it was helpful, Leigh!
Just goes to show no matter how many years you've been gardening. There's always something basic and surprising to learn. Thank you, Susan
I had no idea I could plant them that close if they were on a trellis! And I’ve been gardening a loooong time. And belly button down! I actually planted my pole beans after watching this video and In my head I was telling the beans “there you go, belly button down nice and cozy”. I know, I talk to my plants. Thank you for a really informative video!
Hi, Trish. Thank you for making me chuckle! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I'm currently working on a corn video along the same lines as this one. I hope it'll be ready in a couple of weeks.
Me either. I’m going to plant more :-)
What a pleasure to watch you instruct. You are thorough, calm, and knowledgable, efficient but freindly. I think we can do this!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for your kind comments.
Holy cow, I never paid attention to the side that should face down all these years!! Not even seed packets tell us this. Thank you!!! Also never knew I could start seeds indoors.
It made a huge difference for me when I learned this way back when. Some folks give me a hard time about it, but hey, if it works, why NOT do it?!
Me either 😬
Me too
I never knew this about "how" to plant the bean seeds! (With "belly button" down!) Thanks soooooo much for sharing this! Even us "old gardeners" can learn a trick or two!
that helps but seeds will find their way to do what they do.
Even if you plant a seed upside down, the roots will grow down and the stem will grow up.
However, whenever I'm not sure, I plant it sideways!
I don't know how I get here, but I love how simple you explain the things. New Fan here!!!
Thank you! And welcome!
I probably will spend months watching your videos. God bless you for helping us all!
It's my passion!
Susan, your bean planting tutorial is so educational and ... good for the heart!
Thank you, James!
Susan, as a lifelong gardener, I must say I am very impressed with your video. Your presentation was excellent and unlike SO MANY youtubers, you got your precise information across without being the least bit longwinded, disorganized, or full of uhhs and ahhhs and other forms of timewasting drivel !!! Kudos for a wonderful garden and awesomely organized video !!! And thanks for sharing !!!
Wow, Doug, thank you for the very nice compliments. I try to present the information quickly so my videos aren't too long. Each one gets a little better! Thanks again.
Brilliant point about spacing the pole beans three inches apart because they grow up and not out...
I use a metal dinner fork to pop out plugs or from 72 inserts. This works much better than a smaller stick. It also allows you to pop the complete plug out every time. A fork is also slightly curved.
You're such a good demonstrator/teacher! Your video was well thought out, informative, pleasant and To The Point! Thank you for sharing.
Wow, thank you, Luline!
Agreed! I have been gardening (organically) for 10 years now and that has included oodles of gardening books, magazines, blogs, and videos.
Even so I was very impressed with this video and the precise and very informative way you teach/share. Thank you for sharing your priceless gardening wisdom 😊
I just discovered you Susan and glad I did. I Love vegetable gardening, I live on a farm and ranch and have been growing veges for 50 years. Of course in the beginning I was a complete novice. But with the help of a few books I was on my way. Of course, we ate the produce and I canned and froze lots of it !!!! But my main joy is the wonders of nature, planting a seed and watching it grow into a plant that produces food that sustains us. I struggle with mobility issues but I have a new daughter in law who loves to garden and I am teaching her everything I know but there are always new thing to learn !!!!!!
Hi, Terri. It's so nice to meet you. You truly embody the joy of gardening and I'm so glad you're sharing what you know with others. Take care.
Now this is a perfect video guide to growing beans. The information here is priceless.
Thank you, Juan!
Best how to grow Beans, thank you!
Thanks so much!
Thank you for an tutorial on bean planting ,really appreciated the time you took to explain and show each step, the trellis info was a welcome bonus, happy and healthy gardening 🌱🌻
Thank you, Pranita. Stay well.
Susan Thanks for the great gardening tips. I really appreciate the gardening tips to help ensure I don't make mistake that cost a whole year of gardening to correct the mistakes. You are the best !
Wow, thank you so much! I do my best to make the mistakes for you, LOL!
You are an extremely clear communicator. Hard to believe I just discovered your Channel!
Thank you, Paul!
I agree. 😊
Thank you for explaining the process so thoroughly. You give hope to a newbie gardener like myself. Your trellis is awesome!
She's great! Totally agree.
I’m so happy I come across this video so helpful thanks a bunch I’m a first timer on beans ! Now I’m excited I’ll post my growth n garden ✌️🧑🌾
That's wonderful. Looking forward to hearing how they do.
I learned a few tips with getting the plants at a young stage acclimated
or they will get sunburn. In Guam,
we also struggle with snails and so
I would leave the young plants elevated
till they’re about a foot long or more
Otherwise they’ll get eaten and then transplant them in a container.
I'm just starting this year and I'm so excited! I have my seedlings growing inside and they are already sprouting!
I see why Nature is called Mother. You understood the likes and dislikes of a plant. Thanks Mother Nature.
Best ever tips to grow beans! Thanks!
Thank you!
Wow. And I thought I knew how to plant green beans! At least I do now. Thanks!
I I didn't do the research and didn't think anything of just making holes the specified size and dropping my seeds in. I had no idea it mattered what side the should have been facing. Thank you so much. I'm not a gardener but I'm working on it. 😎👋💚👍
If what you've been doing works, then you should stick with it! But I just much better germination from orienting the seeds correctly at planting time.
@@SusansInTheGarden well. I am surprised but half of them actually sprouted and are processing. I didn't know if it would work and after watching your video had my doubts. Thankfully I've got some in the works. Thanks again and I'll be more studious on the future 😎👍
So thorough and helpful! Thank you!
That's so nice to hear. Thank you.
Great teacher! Very detailed and slow enough to follow. Thank you.
You are so soothing. Its like gardening therapy. Great job with all the technical details.
Thank you!
Thank you for explaining why the beans have to be placed with the "buttons" downward. No wonder my beans were flipping over in the soil.
I started to germinate bean seeds between paper towels about 40 years ago, when they germinate and have a root of about 1/2" I put them in the ground, I have never lost any beans because of the orientation of their belly buttons. In fact it might be better to plant them with their belly buttons up since the root will go naturally downwards around the seed, straighten out, then push the leaf part of the seed upwards. I started germinating beans inside because birds were digging them up. It also gives me a 2 week start.
I use a high sphagnum moss mix to prevent damping off. A finely-milled sphagnum moss is a great idea. A good starter is really important when starting tomatoes when talking about damping off. Over watering is one of the causes of damping off. Letting the surface dry before watering and watering from the bottom help prevent damping off.
Hi, David. It's always nice to hear what works for other gardeners. Cheers.

Thank you also for sharing your knowledge.
thanks this helped a lot!
Thank you so much for this video! Very straight forward & informative. You also did great at not making me feel dumb for not knowing these things prior. Subscribed!💙

I live in the UK. Thank you for your excellent tutorial. You are an outstanding teacher. You certainly love gardening. Kind regards
That is so nice of you, Iris. Thank you and it's lovely to meet you.
What a wholesome video! great for gardening beginners like myself, thank you so much for this video, really filled me with confidence and excitement about starting my own arch this season 👍
Glad it was helpful, Sam! Thanks for your nice comments.
Very helpful. Consideration for the seedling was a good lesson for me. I use cylinders made of 5 foot high fencing to enclose my potted pole beans.with their yard long beans. And I pick them from the outside. It works well in my small garden.
I take a 2 liter bottle, and a needle. I light the needle for a few seconds and make a bunch of holes through the cover of the 2 liter bottle. It’s perfect for watering seedlings!
Dear Susan, very informative video. Many thanks and HAPPY GARDENING to You too !!! 🤗
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video.
My all time favorite pole bean arch trellis video! Enjoy!
Thanks, Brian!

I'm hoping to put some cattle panel trellises in someday. I really love the look of them.
I didn’t know you could start beans indoors. I always read you had to sow them direct. Thank you.
Fantastic! thank you, Susan
Thank you for that hint of placing scar down.
The arches are beautiful
Beautiful information - Thank you very much, Susan
Glad I found this. I'm in zone 5 as well and am planning to start my beans in a couple of weeks
Well, did you get them planted? Mine are going in as well, maybe two weeks, in zone 7A.
@@shadyman6346 well started my peas and then it's been cold and raining. So probably tomorrow evening or afternoon

Thank you! You will do great!
I am so lucky to have your channel in my UA-cam collection!!
Thank you!
Good information got my pole Beans socking in water, I am in zone 9 so no frost. Went to Lowes bought Kentucky Wonder.
I just sowed some beans seed and never even noticed what side was up or down. God is good though and he will let them sprout❤
Yes, a lot of times, it won't matter. But I think it's helpful when starting the seeds indoors ahead of time, where there's less room in each plant cell for the seeds to correctly orient themselves.
Thanks Susan for the helpful tip .
Love that you get to the point and stay on topic! Very useful information and good use of my time. Gives me more time in my garden 🤗
I really appreciate that, Artemis!
Do love gardening
here in california im do it every years
That cattle panel is an amazing idea, thanks Susan!
We use a 20 ' Rebar bent into a U-shape and plant between beds as do you. Way cheaper
SOLD, love your program and I live in same zone.
love your set up
I'm so glad to have found you! The trellis idea is just brilliant--it's on my list for this spring. New subscriber and looking forward to more.

Beautifully explained. Couldn't ask for better! Both the 'belly button' info and the spacing. Thank you from myself and my balcony garden in Paris, France.

I'm going to grow runner beans this year alongside my pepper plants which I grow in pots, I've made loads of videos on them :) I have four varieties of runner beans two of which produce white flowers and two red. Great video and advice :)
Love your channel. Lots of info. With minimal useless chit chat. Great to have someone in zone 5 doing this. Thank you
thank you for sharing your knowledge on growing bean.....planning, gentle and caring
Great tip about the seed orientation. I have listened to many you tube vids and you are the first to mention it
I learned it from Peter Chan, an amazing plant pathologist and soil physicist. I feel he knows what he's talking about and it made a huge different for me.
I have a little Kidney bean that I harvested last year that I actually found on the bedroom floor. Not sure how it got there but anyway, put it in a tin with cotton padding and water. The damn thing sprouted TWO DAYS later. It was dying to get started. Il give this lad some good love and attention and see what it produces this year. Im going to record times etc this year and do it properly. Spring is so exciting.
Hi, Susan. Wow, that's amazing! That will be a fun project.
I grew my beans upside down (roots up) 🤦♀️ and I've been scouring the internet to find out the correct way! New subscriber!!
Thanks, Sabrina!
How did you manage that?
@@KyrenaH you just plant the seeds upside down and they grow into the ground instead of up. The slit side of the bean seed needs to face up.
Lol, I literally just throw them in...never one problem with germination...
What a wonderful video and that galvanized fence idea was a stroke of genius! Thanks for sharing! :)
Thanks so much!
This is one of the few videos that I’m grateful UA-cam recommended! I enjoyed watching every second of your video and never had the urge to fast forward. Subscribed right away :) Thank you for the great content!
Awesome! Thank you so much!
Oh wow, I hadn't suspected birds were killing my newly sprouted beans. I thought it was slugs. Thanks for the tip. Now I need to find a quick way to protect some seedlings that are just starting to push up.
We have also used floating row cover for the first week or two of their lives. Or bird netting.
First time watching one of your videos. Very informative and easy to understand.
Thank you, Sylvia!
Your post is the most informative that I have watched. Thank you
Glad it was helpful, Gary!
Very informative, knowledgeble and Crystal clear presentation
What a beautiful garden. Thank you for sharing.
I'm an avid gardener, but haven't grown beans (will be growing, this year). I did not know that about the belly button facing down. Thank you for that valuable tip!
Hi, LaKay. It's nice to meet you. This is certainly an unusual tip but I learned it years ago from a highly-respected soil scientist/plant pathologist. As soon as I started paying attention to the orientation of the seeds at planting time, the germination rates skyrocketed! Have a great garden this year.
Very good, love all the detail tips!
Loving it susan, great work
Добрый день, очень приятно смотреть, как люди любят природу. Не понимая ни слова, я все поняла))). Язык природы он всем ясен!!!!
Great Info Susan. I started a channel as well to document my raised beds this year. I made a trellis out of a hog panel. Nothing growing on it yet but excited to see it full :)
You are always an inspiration. Thank you!
Thank you, Debi! You just made my day.
