I would say boost for rhythm and no boost for thick, melodic leads. I wonder how it would sound quad tracked (two takes boost - two takes no boost). I'll have to find out for myself one day 😉 That Laney Steelpark pedal is very cool with the different boost styles. That upper mid boost seems super helpful for making orange amps work great for tighter styles.

They're obviously close and both sound good, but when you did the back to back I really heard where the difference lies. Boost takes that Orange character and makes it cut more through the mix to snarl things up, whereas unboosted you have the same character basically flooding the mix in a killer, push-you-back-in-your-seat-and-pummel-you kind of way. Both are good and it really comes down to application in my opinion. Love this.

This is a good topic. I do feel that boosting a high gain amp using a guitar with high output pickups can be overwhelming and out of control. Please do a high/low output pickups with high / low gain amp.

Yeah I see this. My favorite pickups now are the medium output pickups and boost pedal instead of actives. Just because the amps I use react to this better for me.

    • @JimijaymesProductions

Good topic idea, I use boosts for two things, the trad way of boosting into a crunchy amp to get more gain, sustain and tighten low end or sometimes to smooth out gain and get tighter but with slightly less overall output (especially as the bass is lessened) to control the gain of my amp better.

This is an interesting video and something I've tried with that exact amp and both a boss SD1 and a TS9. At lower volumes its really loose and tubby feeling in the low end response. So from 1 to 3 on the master, boosting totally tightens up the amp. That said, once you crank that master above 4 and especially around 6, it naturally compresses and tightens up the low end. My personal preference is to get those tubes cooking...crank the master to around 6 (1 o'clock) and use the attenuator for volume control. No boost needed...very well designed amp that just does what it does so well.

I throw a boost and a noise suppressor in front of every amp i use. Even if it sounds great without them, it pretty much always sounds better with a tubescreamer and a gate.

    • @aryinc
      @aryinc 3 роки тому +1

agreed. no matter what pickups. a good boost and a gate. Compresses a bit and makes leads more alive or something instead of dry/dead sounding. sometimes the difference is small, like with evh amps and or engl amps.

Depending on the amp and guitar I may boost but generally I dont like how they sound. Some just cut the balls right off the amp and make high mids harsh. . But sometimes the boost is an integral part of the tone and not just an eq curve. A highpass pre-eq around 40-50Hz before the amp and some multiband compression after the cab around 120Hz can work well and offer more flexibility in the mix after recording.

  • @peterrovaniemi138

I have the MK II and usually boost the front. I wouldn't say it needs it, but it does help me cut through a loud twin guitar mix. If I was the only guitarist in my band, I probably wouldn't feel the need to boost.

  • @PereRevert

You nailed it again ! Such a gorgeous sound !! Personally I do prefer not to boost, mostly because I'm in studio environment and love warmer sounds to be tamed later during the mixing process depending on the arrangement, but I must admit the boost adds that extra grit that really helps to cut through some dense mixes. Excellent comparison as usual.

I think for hi gain riffing the boost is almost always welcomed even if not really boosting as it cleans the bottom and adds clarity. For solos the extra gain is usually welcomed in metal.
If using these amps in a rock or pop scenario, it go either way.

I guess it depends on the situation. Like a thicker track with more layers like multiple guitars and drums and vocals the boost would help it shine and cut through. But just raw sound lets say just for the intro of a song with isolated guitar I loved the raw Rockerverb tone. Favourite sound ever, Orange amps are brutal.

Normally I'd say : with Boost.
But this time I like the sound better without boost! Two factors contribute : The Rockerverb just needs this low end to produce its signature saturation. Also your particular (and great!) playing style suits a somewhat rounder tone.
I also really dig the sm58 in this tone. It spices up the high mids just where the amp needs it.
My two cents. Thanx! Great video 👍

  • @ttbean9491

Low-end sounds so much more useful (tight) with the boost. But, the top-end loses some dimensionality with the boost on. Hard call, but it seems this combo might need the boost to cut through a dense mix. Great riffs as always. TT

Both are great and have a reason and a purpose depending on the style of music you're gonna play. If you're gonna go for something Doomy, Stoner, Black Sabbathish etc, you won't need the boost cause the fatness of the amp makes it sound so great, and it has already enough gain.
If you're gonna go Thrash, Death, Black, or "Modern" Metal, tightening the sound and taming a bit of the low end with the boost is definitely a good idea.
Killer amp in every configuration anyway and the Laney Steelpark sounds really interesting and nice !

I dig the sound without the boost. However, the parts that need the clarity clearly benefitted. The higher pitched chords sounded much more defined with the boost. So my take is both work. Would also like to see how picking dynamics work. String punishment vs lightly caressing strums. Some amps clear and tighten up when you bash the strings.

  • @lichen8855

Yeah I feel like it really depends on what you want out of the amp. I like them both but in this case I feel like the boost removes some of that lower mid punch that I love about the Rockerverb that no other amp I've heard quite does. At the same time it adds some clarity in the upper mids and trebles. I personally liked the character of this amp preserved. Maybe a clean boost could preserve that while adding more aggression.

  • @mountainpeakcloud8442
    @mountainpeakcloud8442 2 роки тому

I feel like it's a choice between, do you want the guitar to slice through the mix with a bit more highs vs do you want the guttural gut punch of the low mids to be more focused. I don't think there's a right or wrong answer as both sound great, and one of the other could be more appropriate depending on personal preference and style of music. If I'm playings more stoner rock/doom type stuff, I'd want more of the focused lower mids that so characteristic of Orange, but if I was pushing it a little more towards hard rock and metal, I'd probably appreciate the boost. Interesting thing is, when I boost my Rockerverb MKii with a Boss Blues Driver, I can get into modded JCM 800 territory.

Hard to choose... the first unboosted clip has something nice, but there is some clarity and pick-attack in the second clip that makes it stand out more.. but indeed makes it more 'general'.
Maybe just use an EQ pedal to remove some bass from the guitar, without the other stuff a tubescreamer-style circuit does (clipping / compressing / rolling of highs)

Love the RV on its own. I have both these bits if kit and prefer the "blue" setting on the pedal. Keeps it a bit more ballsy whilst giving it some more cut. Other pedals like the sd-1 castrate the tone too much, bd-1 works okay as a clean boost with tone and gain to flavour. Great vid 👍🤘

I personally don't feel the need for a boost. I really like that kind of roaring sound it has without the boost. The boost sure tightens up the low end but it losses that middy roar like sound and adds a hi fizz which don't sound that nice to me.

This time I'm still sober! , only once ´´RAW´´, but you have adapted to ´´PURE´´
Outside of jokes bro, with overdrive it sounds more edgy modern and aggressive

It's weird, in the mix I preferred no boost. Isolated sounded better with boost.

Boost for sure, it really tightened up the bottom end.

Is the ibby hipshot Bridge a direct fit for the PRS or have you had to drill? Awesome Video as always! 👍🏼

I prefer the boost like you are using it, just to tighten up, i have been doing the same at gigs lately

It sounds pretty great doesn't it? It does lose some of that Orange character though...

@@SonicDriveStudio yes, and it also provides more tunnels to get lost in down the rabbit hole of tone searching,... amps, cabs, boost pedals, pick ups, guitars,...
