- Hustle with the crew of the USS Hancock in the South China Sea in February 1965 as piston-engine A-1 Skyraiders, supersonic F-8 Crusaders, sporty A-4 Skyhawks and other aircraft of the fleet fly missions in support of ground objectives in Viet Nam. That's a Sidewinder air-to-air missile being mounted to an F-8 Crusader.
The vigor -- and rigor -- of an aircraft carrier crew is inspiring to watch. The film causes one to wonder -- where are these men now; what were their subsequent lives like?
The Hancock was one of the World War II Essex-class carriers upgraded for postwar duty. Hancock was the first U.S. fleet carrier to receive steam catapults during a modernization in the early 1950s.

I served aboard the USS Hancock CVA-19 with VA-164 (CVW-21) The Hancock was part of
Task Force 77 in 1970-'71 on Yankee Station, South China Sea. Hancock still had a wooden flight deck underneath the Black Non Skid.
Thank you for adding a bit of your history. Always enjoy hearing from veterans.
Went to Alameda for the departure of the USS Hancock on a WESTPAC. We had family friends with VA-163, CAW-16.
Lot of courage and coordination that goes on the flight deck. Thanks for showing this
You are very welcome!
It was great to find these videos of the Hancock and air wing 21 including my squadron VA-215 "Barnowls" flying A1 Skyraiders. I joined them when they returned from this cruise.
Glad you found this, and thanks for serving.
did you know Fred Nelson who flew Skyraiders for VA 215 around that time or a bit before?
Just AWESOME AVIATION HISTORY
Blessings

F-8s off and back to a WW2 Essex carrier. Well done!
I was a radioaman aboard the Hancock from mid-1972 to December of 1974. Quite a ride...

I was aboard the USS Hancock CVA-19. From 1-3-63 to 4-28-66.My 20th birthday was 2-6-65.I was 20 years old.it was a sunny peaceful day I. The South China seat off the coast of Veitnam. As had a hard working day.Next morning at 0800 hundred we heard the scottlebutt the planes where being armed with bombs this was the first time since WW2.
Wow -- I'm sure that memory will last forever. I was a bit younger -- a teenager in school -- but I also remember a compelling sense of history unfolding when i saw the first news films of A-4 Skyhawks carrying bombs into combat in 1965. Thank you for watching, and thank you for serving.
I was on board during those years.
I was on the Hancock for the 1964/5 cruise. I served in the helicopter squadron HU - 1 and was one of the crew that pulled the pilot out of the water that went off the angle deck and also the crew member that went off the starboard and washed into the water during unrep. I was the guy running the hoist.
Thanks Mr Johnsen for the Vietnam era post. That era, like the Korean war is not talked about much. There are certain circles where that is not true though. We have a gentleman at my church who served in Vietnam in 68-69. I also entered the Marines in 73. I do wonder where they are now. As always God bless you and yours and thanks again for everything you do! God bless the USA!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸
It is good to find vintage films from al eras; happy to present them when we can.
Great video, Fred!
Thanks!
The 8.40 mark , I got a laugh out of it .
Awesome👍.. we operated A4 Skyhawks with our RNZAF ✈️🇳🇿
Awesome!!! Thank you!!
I was there!
Nice video....They even had a "Stoof With a Roof" on that deck. I appreciate you finding these jems. 2:21 what is going on there?
I'm worried about the sailor with his head a couple of feet from the radar dish. Great video of early Viet Nam.
Served aboard her in early 70's
Thank you for watching and commenting. A classic aircraft carrier.
Darn powerful catapaults 😳
Nice video with a lot of hustle and muscle. I was getting ready to graduate HS at this time. Thanks
Now we know that were no attack on US Navy in Tonkin Gulf that resulted in the Tonkin Gulf Resolution which resulting in sending over 500,000 troops in 1965 and withdrawing in 1973.

Thanks for watching. Always good to hear from veterans who served on these ships.
Where were the RN and their fabulous aircraft carriers off Indochina?
Thank you for the video. I visite a veterans memorial plaza located at 1795 Admiral Sheely Dr it has lots of plaques on people who served when I read one that has specific info I will Google it to see what I can find out. That led me to this video. So I was able to stand there and watch this video at a plaque Dedicated to. EM3 ED GANSEMER VIETNAM USS HANCOCK CVA19 1964-68 so that was exciting for me. Thanks. The next time I'm at the memorial I will be looking on your channel (I'm definitely a subscriber after finding that video) for a video on the USS LEVY it was active in the South Pacific From 1941- 45 their is a plaque Dedicated to a EM1 Solider if you don't have a video for that ship during that time would you please consider making one thanks again.
Wow -- that's a great use of technology. Will keep an eye out for something on USS Levy; am at the mercy of what I can discover in archives. It can be a deep dive, but the things we find are rewarding. Thank you for watching and commenting.
