  • How long, each day, should a pond aerator run? In most cases, the answer is full-time or 24/7. If you choose to run the aerator part-time, it's advised to operate it for at least 12 hours per day for beneficial effects in the pond.
There are times as we discussed in the video below when you may only want to run an aerator at night. Be sure to watch the video below if you have fish, a fairly shallow pond, and live in a hot climate.

We have a small quarry. We have an aerator and pump. We add biologicals to keep algae growth down. There was no problem until the person up stream filled in the swampy area, planted grass and added fertilizer. How much should we run the pump? Is there anything else we can do to control algae?

Sorry to hear your neighbor fertilized your pond. I would run the aerator 24/7 if you are able. As well use the microbes but consider being aggressive with the dosing. Take the recommended dosage rate for the product and at least double that for a month and see if that is helpful. You not only need to match or exceed the water volume of the pond, which is usually a standard dose, but also address that spike in nutrients...so be liberal with those...they will continue to be safe to use even at higher doses.

Thank you for the great information how would you fix it if it's putting out low pressure from the pump side? Thanks

Hi...so this sounds like the pump may need to be rebuilt. If it's a rocking piston...here's a video showing that process...they are all about the same in how you do it.

If it's a linear compressor the diaphragms would need to be changed and you'd want to get with the pump manufacturer for that.
      Hope this helps for you!

Why aerate at night with a fountain aerator?

Good question and thanks for asking. The only reason not to run a fountain full time would be to save on operational costs. And if you were going to only run it part time, the best time to do it for fish protection in hot weather would be over night, which is usually when you see the lowest oxygen levels in a pond and when most fish loss occurs. Ideally though, for best results, I'd run it 24/7. But I'm not paying the electric bill:)

After a pond turn over with a large loss of fish in our 1/2 acre - 14 Ft avg depth pond…last year…. We just installed a floating KASCO - surface huge bubbler Aerator. So far so GREAT.

@@TEKTONTIM1956 Tim that's the solution right there. I'm working on a video now that suggests the use of the surface aerator as a good emergency solution if fish start dying. But of course, having something in and going before you get into trouble is much more preferable.
