Posted the following one-star review to The Best Paste website a few days ago. You won't find it on their site.
"I sorely miss Anchors Aweigh Teddy Boy Matte. The last jar purchased was on November 2, 2021, and when I got down to the last quarter of the jar, I purchased another. Yes, that stuff was that good and would last a very long time. Even the scent lasts. I’m down to the last 1/8th of the jar and the scent is as beautiful and strong as the day I first opened the jar. I’m sensitive to fragrance, and this is the only fragrance I’ve ever enjoyed without an adverse response . . . and I love the scent. Now that Anchors Aweigh has been bought and rebranded, I purchased (07/13/23) The Best Paste, Low Shine, Medium Hold that was supposed to be the same product; just rebranded. The paste is the same except without any fragrance whatsoever. Correction, it does smell a bit . . . like something from the garage that I’d use on drywall, woodworking or the body of a car; not my hair. I’m using it, but that small joy I got from the Cherry Mint fragrance is gone."

UPDATE I was informed that the original Anchors jars were actually plastic as well, not glass. I had no idea, they totally looked like glass in all the photos I've seen, so that's wild.

Dammit. Anchors Teddy Boy Matte is by far the best hair product I’ve ever used. Was rocking a buzz cut for a year and just now starting to style my hair again, and I just ran out of Teddy Boy Matte :(

As a hairstyling student and hair product enthusiast, calling everything a paste is bullshit. I'm going to miss Anchors courage clay, good thing I still have jar left.
I would be glad to pay you $80-90 even if the jar is partially used. I really want to try it.

Great vid. Just a quick note: the jars were always plastic. At least TB original and Courage clay which I have.
I used to use this product all the time and now I think I'm gonna make the switch to shear revivals American gardens. I do not like the rebranding of it one bit it's almost as all the character and personality is gone now.
Thank you for your video. I was looking into a product for my toddler's hair and found Anchors Aweigh Teddy Boy pomade from someone's hair product reviews. I then tried to find where to purchase it from and ran into "Out of Stock" all over the place and got confused. I then found your video which explains the rebrand. I like how you explain your opinion of the matter. Well my take on it is the original company sold out, just so like so many others and of course the new product is never as good as the old, in my opinion. I haven't tried either formulas, but will not be buying The Best Paste. lol I however, will search for the original and purchase it IF I can find it at a decent price. Thanks again!

Agreed 100%. This is quite a tragedy and a travesty.
Regarding the price... it's very easy to drive the point home using simple math.
Anchors 20$ for 4.5oz
Paste 28$ for 3oz
Anchors 4.44 per oz
Paste 9.33 per oz
They MORE THAN DOUBLED the price.
Is there a cheaper alternative?

Wow , this is a great video .
Even if a product provides one particular shine and one particular hold, it still has to be labelled correctly. A firm holding natural finish clay has different feeling and application in the hair than a firm holding natural finish wax and pomade. You can't just call all of them "paste". That would add MORE to the confusion. Categories are there because they are necessary.

I used to use the AA strong hold, best product i have ever used. I get the colour packaging for simplicity and to stop confusion because i want to try the shear revival products and they're very confusing without digging into the write ups and product info. The price hike completely sucks though!!

Shear Revival forever and always
Whens the TDM PASTE coming out!? LOL, my thought about this particular rebrand is that maybe they want to confuse customers so that when they buy the wrong PASTE assuming we are made of money and will go back and buy the right PASTE (pomade, clay, etc) OR designers occassionally love shaking things up but totally miss the mark in the process with the lack of attention to detail OR over simplifying designs.
I realize this is a very unpopular opinion on this channel, but I recently started using the Matte Firm Paste and think it might be among the very best styling products I've ever tried. Super easy application, wonderful subtle fragrance and a perfect matte finish. Works amazingly well in my fine hair, although the hold isn't quite as strong as I would like.
It's heavily based on the original courage clay formula which WAS already awesome. I just can't support this crappy rebrand and the crazy price hike

Hmmm, where to start.
Well, the name, let's start there. The website actually blames Ben for the name ("with Ben calling it THE BEST PASTE.™") but Kristan takes credit for it on a post on her Instagram ("..I re-named it, I re-branded it, and I called it THE BEST PASTE.™...).
Now, I'm going to have to put my hands up and and admit I'm a shallow b*tch, and I am a sucker for some nice packaging (Hello Samson's) or quirky branding, but this isn't that. It looks really non-descript and generic, the kind of thing you find at a bargain store with all the usual supermarket brands. I can get over boring packaging if the product is fantastic, but I've also gotta be enticed to buy it in the first place to at least try.
Also, there's something quite patronising about the whole "men are simple creatures who just want to know the hold and shine level, let's not bombard their tiny Testosterone-fuelled brains with extraneous details", which seems to have led them down the garden path and made them think using a single word to describe half a dozen products was a good idea. Men no need learn 5 different words now!
*On a positive note: from her IG she seems nice enough, and I hope this works out for her, although I would advise her to fire her marketing people (or whoever advised her this whole rebranding was a good idea.
Well said indeed! I agree with you 100% on all of this. I feel the same about the whole idea of "men got smooth brain, need small words" idea too. That whole notion is just plain silly.

Yeah after I finished the video I thought about that, how this looks kinda like their budget/supermarket lineup (I forget what it's called).
Man, if I was a previous customer and/or re-purchaser of Anchors, I would be *p i s s e d* I mean, it would be akin to Steve Lockhart selling and then Lockhart's becomes this "found on the shelves at Ulta" bs.
Hadn't gotten around to trying any Anchor products. The clay and Teddy Boy matte product always interested me though.. Almost got their shampoo & conditioner, last year.
The clay was... pretty weird. It would be shinier than even an OB clay and would make my hair go into strands fairly easily. No matter the amount.
But tbh I wouldn't try it again with that kind of jar. The minimalistic design hurt more than it did good. Sometimes more is more. Now even the By Vilain plastic jars look more inspiring than this.

Just finally ran out of my Strong Hold and guess bought my last jar right before the rebrand.
I was really confused and their change makes it feel turbo corporate-y. Not in love with it plus the significant price hike plus shipping feels not fun. Plus hate that its like “men are stupid and can’t be bothered to learn” marketing

Who else has rebranded? I haven't been keeping up lately. But this is a bigbummer, anchors was one of the best, always enjoyed their halloween line up
SR is also rebranding, but from what I see, it's not as drastic and cringey as this one. Flagship also had a rebrand not long ago, and while I dislike the new jar design, I do enjoy the new products

Never got the chance to try courage clay. This is honestly so sad to see. Their social media presence feels so fabricated and less about the customer and more about the clout. Curious if you or anyone could recommend some alternative brands that has that homebrew vintage feel?

It's a rather tone deaf and poorly thought out rebrand. It just comes across as gimmicky, like she's creating a problem that wasn't there in order that she can solve it and market these products as the solution. Most products have a hold and shine level indicator on the packaging FFS! And a rudimentary Google search will tell you the difference between most hair product categories if you care to find out.

Not related to this video but after your Iconic Hair Candy video I bought myself one and wow. I've got almost long enough hair for what I call the Geralt and that stuff makes styling my hair and tying it back absolutely effortless.
On another note I saw an Alpha M video sadly for the first time in a few years and he's still obnoxious and broey as crap 😒

It looks like slikhaar supermarket product range now & looks terrible. At those prices, I'm guessing they won't even make it into those types of stores but then I don't know the American market.
Just dreadful rebranding & I know the previous owner will be happy counting the sale money & spending time with family etc, but part of him must be dying seeing all his previous works going to shit
Insinuating that men aren't intelligent enough to learn the difference between paste, clay, etc. is enough to make me look elsewhere. Plenty of other great brands to try!
Honestly this re-brand is One of the most cringe ive ever seen .... Suspect review, generic packaging, smaller size higher price, the worst name ever and to me also a bit of an annoying personality from the owner. A nice cocktail for disaster with the hair comunity, maybe will be good for some salon but im not even sure about that. Since the news i have seen more people trying to buy the old packaging (myself included) that intrested in the new stuff, absurd.
