28:00, hall and Oates out of touch from 1985's big bam boom album and tour. Am a big fan and saw this tour in concert. Also just before that was manneater, your local deejays like having hall and Oates in rotation.

Heeeeere we have a new Shango video! I can attest for Magnavox capacitors. I have a suitcase record player from 1962. All those little black cylinder-type caps were bad or going bad. However, the filter electrolytic was just fine, no hum at all. Also, I read that Mrs. Miller's first album sold 250,000 copies in its first 3 weeks. I wonder how Paul McCartney felt when she did "It's a Hard Day's Night"!
That was a fun video, had to watch it in two parts, first half on the android Moto the second half on the HP ProBook 6550b. Love old stuff that is brought back from the abyss. Thanks you shango066
Thank you for sharing this awsome video with us. I cant understand why you dont have a hundreds of thousands of subscribers. If I were in a room with an explosive device and had to nominate a person to cut either the red or blue wire to save the world you would be my go to engineer to make that choice. Awsome.
Eight years ago I did a recap of my 1966 Magnavox Astrosonic 100. Has separate receiver power amp chassis. A lot of caps to replace. Glad it used pc boards. Earlier models used point to point wiring. The filter cap under chassis for the power suplply had a chunk of plastic missing from it. Once recapped it sounded as good as new.
Nice repair Shango. My mom & dad had a Magnavox FM/AM / Phono console in the 70's thru the 80's, similar looking to the one you worked on in the video. Hey that capacitor testing rig is a good idea, it's crude but it works. Good night Miss Miller. LoL
At least it's not a Crosley! Once again, another fine vintage electronic repair job by shango066. I like the way he uses music to test caps as well as or instead of just a meter with a boring "beep" sound.
Out of all the Magnavox consoles that I've worked on, I've never had an audio output transistor fail and have only seen one RF amp transistor become intermittent (germanium). The transistors generally hold up well in these.
I am not a fan of shooting a capacitor canon at something, but I have learned through my own experience that Astro Sonic chassis just need them. Many times Magnavox used those axial Nichicons on the amplifier board too, and they are always bad to some level. I too rarely have one of those can caps be bad, but the upper end split chassis models often have bad PS caps on the power amp board. That chassis is from an Astro Sonic 15. 15 watts total by the older rating system.
I laughed hard when Bryan was taping caps inside that acoustic phonograph! But on a serious note, I live in Fort Wayne Indiana where Magnavox Astro Sonics are bountiful and in beautiful cosmetic condition, but often were retired due to the stereo failing. I buy them as a collector and restore them. My Astro Sonic 15 had the same issue as this one.. was retired and placed in the dining room as a hutch. Cabinet was too nice to junk. I bought it at the family estate sale. This is the only Astro Sonic label console I have come across that did not have aluminum horns up front. If it did not say "Astro Sonic" on the bezel, I would suspect it was from the lower Magna Sonic line.
Thumbs up for good work. Similar observations on large metal can filter caps and Japanese TO1 cased Germaniums from 50s and 60s era. Dome top transistors get weird, but luckily they were common for only a few years. I seem to find more dirty switch contacts, cracked circuit board traces around tuning caps and volume controls, cracked output tube sockets. Carbon composition resistors can get constipated, also overheating, leading to cracks causing opens. Intermittents are the worst. I don't have the patience to rework IF cans, unless they are the earlier large ones.
Have the same set.... you are correct the caps are junk, once replaced it comes back to life, also mine had a leaky output transistor causing hiss in background... was lucky to find replacements...plays great now...
The lead length is due to a production line machine which trimmed leads by placing the board on a fixture with a spacer over a rotating sharp blade kinda like a rotary lawn mower blade...
On the no AM complaint, in my area there is only one AM channel left. Soon there won’t be any within receiving distance here. Maybe in his location all of them have already been taken off the air.
Those leads remind me of a Brier Patch. That Mrs. Miller still Jazzing up the tunes! Thrilling, a Box & [big] 10" Knife - That's logical. Really need more that actually Think (instead of ploy for $$$) when doing repairs. Ya done Good!
Those axial Nichicons are real early ones and identifiable by their color. Later, (1968+) they made outstanding ones. They were identifiable by being light blue in color (later (post 1978) they were improved again and became dark blue in color. These are very dependable and rarely give trouble. ALL early Japanese electrolytics are probably suspect, especially Sanyo plastic-cased (1960-1968) ones.
46:00 At least this person knew how to pack it well. In the 80s, when I was in shipping/receiving, the UPS guidelines said that you needed to pack your package so it could withstand a six foot fall onto concrete. I've never went wrong using that.
wade hicks Too bad "Disco Saturday Night" wasn't on there, but all they played is music in this video, along with some Mrs. Miller cover songs. This past weekend I listened to "Disco Saturday Night" from 10 PM until 3 AM eastern time, where I can get my groove on right up until the wee hours.
I was given an "Astro Sonic Stereo Theater" in the 80's by my neighbor. It was HUGE ! lol. Like 8 feet wide. The TV didn't work. I sent it out...paid over 200 bucks..(in the eighties that was a lot) !Got it home. The TV came on..but everthing was green !! Adjusting it did not help ..I got ripped. Anyway the radio sounded great with its large woofers. I threw it away a year later.lol.
He knows how to schmooz his xomments. I wish I had the same facimility with words. Mrs Miller should have gotten The Nobel prize for Peace... at least that's what my neighbour thinks whenever I turn the volume down... Very entertaining and interesting video. Thanks a lot for showing :)
I had the same problems with some stereos I wanted a few years ago. No audio from the left or right channel. I threw them all out as everyone I took them to didn't know what they were doing. Had no choice but to buy a modern plastic stereo with awful tinny sound. Keep up the good work, electrical repairs are all but gone in the UK.
i wish i was closer to you i have my dads 1966 or 67 eletihome console stereo got used a lot and need redone but i am in ontario canada . your videos are great
My Teac A 1500 from 1966 had one bad Germanium transistor. ONE! Of course it was the most difficult to find! I did find a replacement NOS and it came with 19 of the same. I also purchased all NOS for the rest, just in case! But all the electrolytic caps were going bad.
Very well done video. I think you will have a happy customer and he will find the AM interference source on his end. Hall & Oates....cheesy?? Sacrilege!! But the old lady certified entertainer screeching.....THATS cheesy.
I never noticed this, but Shango at 2X speed sounds just like Ben Shapiro. Also, I end every one of my music show broadcasts with a selection from Mrs. Miller. The kids love it. That Maggie unit has a hot AM tuner too... i heard several San Diego stations nice n loud in the bandscan. Nice job bringing it back.
ShangoO66, You remind me of high school electronics teacher talking about those cheap Japanese capacitors. He was old school concerning electronics, vacuum tubes and was not fond of transistors.
10:55 I've always thought balance controls were over-rated; probably useful in the early days of stereo simulcasts, or maybe if the speakers were at different ends of the room, but harder to justify in a console or a boombox. And, I'd much rather have only one volume control than separate ones for L and R.
Did radiotvphononut send you that Mrs Miller recording? He inflicted it on us a couple weeks ago. Yes, she was around for a few years as a novelty act, like Tiny Tim.
And shango - fix the parallax setting on your FLIR thingy. There should be a slider somewhere. Cool video btw. I learned about these quasi-complementary power stages in school in the 90s but never saw any in the wild.
Wow. I have almost this exact chassis, only mine is a 1966 model. I have started to replace some of the caps. Mine had a muffled left channel and that ended up being the caps in the speaker crossover.
With Mrs Miller shouting through the audio, it probably finished those marginal caps! People condemn germanium, but they sound almost like tube audio with a small signal required to cross the .1 volt bias threshold. Enjoyable repair....
I am glad to see new videos coming from you. Always interesting. Your video seems to be out of order. The unboxing came last, which unless we are living in an alternate time continuum, should have come first. Just saying. Please, please please no more Mrs. Miller. Sounds like bad opera meets rock.
You set the category as comedy, Shango you're a genius!
The quintessential example of edutainment. Can't get enough Shango.
I bet Jason Cruz was so excited throughout this video with all those shiny brand new capacitors installed in that stereo.
Jason Cruz has two favourite things in a video like this; brand new capacitors and radiotvphononut.
That's what I was thinking, he probably pissed himself when he heard Shango say he's going to do a recap!
I think the Cruzbot probably went into meltdown, seeing all those caps replaced but the main filter can left there staring at him, silently mocking.
Best troubleshooting & repair videos of all the inter webs. Right here

I found this very interesting. He supplied the information, you investigated everything, and solved the puzzle. A detective show for electronics!!!
Just started watching you Shango. Great educational adventure. Was an old techie, used to work on TV's . All that terrible old stuff.
Out of all the Magnavox consoles that I've worked on, I've never had an audio output transistor fail and have only seen one RF amp transistor become intermittent (germanium). The transistors generally hold up well in these.
That series had problems when the RF transistors did fail. By 75 they became fairly unavailable. They were built like tanks.
@@clifffton The Astro-Sonic line? i think that ended in 1972

Mrs Miller's voice is what caused those caps to fail. Being exposed to that noise is deadly.
On the no AM complaint, in my area there is only one AM channel left. Soon there won’t be any within receiving distance here. Maybe in his location all of them have already been taken off the air.
Nothing like a true stereo sound.
Another excellent video Shango.

The Guitologist
Is that the Mrs Miller who patronized every TV show possible in the late 60s/70s?

Mrs. Miller, The Shaggs, Wing. That would have been a show
Shango. Your sense of humor makes me want to share some acid with Guitologist. Good idea for testing though.

Nice one. Thank you.
