    Ice melts with pressure, so that's probably why it drips extra when you hang from it.

    • @ttonAb2
      @ttonAb2 2 роки тому +7

      Ice has a melting point of 0 until above a pressure of 10 MPa at which point it starts to melt at colder temperatures... this is somewhere around 1450 psi... I think instead it melts more because they have more surface area and efficient conduction of their body heat to the ice.

    • @angst_
      @angst_ 2 роки тому +4

      @@ttonAb2 @bma2 This video shows ice melting with a guitar string and 10 (or less) pounds of weight. Sure the string is only like 0.011" and ~3" wide, so that's not a lot of surface area, but it still not anything close to 1450psi. (Not saying what you said is wrong, but something is happening here). I've experienced squeezing snow melting faster than just holding it.) Just in case the link doesn't share it's Veritasium's video "Does Pressure Melt Ice?

    • @ttonAb2
      @ttonAb2 2 роки тому +1

      @@angst_ the ice must also be at equilibrium throughout and at a temperature of 0. Thus if the pressure doesn't quite reach 1450 psi where you get lowering of the melting point by many degrees you can still get lowering by a small fraction of a degree which would cause the wire to pass through and the water to freeze again after it passes... still with the hands likely just conduction unless you're the hulk...I don't know where my other reply went because I don't see it anymore but the material of the wire also has a large impact on this, indicating large influences from conduction even in the wire experiment.

      Well you can make them more "cold hearted" ... by adding salt to the water before freezing it. This supposedly also increases the "grip" of the ice (at least Richard Hammond complained about "sea ice" when he was skiing to the North Pole).

      Pete and Tom do their "silly problems" competition (well they recently made a video and it was a great success) ... and adding this kind of a hold on a wall could be interesting (especially when you can also create a crack out of ice).

  • @Muck006
    @Muck006 2 роки тому +4

    @Anton
    Did you use "tap water" to make the ice balls? If you add some salt to it the freezing temperature of the ice - and thus the temperature people will experience - is lower.
    The core of the grips is made of "ice with bubbles" ... that reduces the structural strength of the object. To prevent this you need to make the object in several stages ... first just freeze a bit around the metal stick ... and then slowly increase the size in several steps.
    *There IS a way to make it "slightly grippy" ... by adding SAWDUST to the mix. In WWII they toyed with the idea of building a GIANT aircraft carrier out of a stuff called "Pykrete" and the sawdust stops the transmission of heat somewhat (so it lasts longer) and possibly even improves the "air bubbles" problem.*
    [Solid water is denser and thus requires less volume, but since the water freezes from the surface to the middle there will be "bubbles" (either air that was in the water or just "nothing") in the middle. Taking a lot more time could increase the time these grips might last (in a hall where people just wear shirts it is probably quite warm).]

    Вообще, чтобы зацеп жил дольше, я бы в центре его поместил шар поменьше из материала с большей теплоемкостью, чем у воды. Например, из железа. Ну а снаружи, собственно, сантиметр или немного больше льда. Так шары бы стали значительно более долговечными. Ну и шар из железа лучше делать не гладким, а насверлить в нем отверстий в сантиметр глубиной и миллиметров 6 в диаметре.
