100uF capacitor is used for smoothing purpose. I have tested these two circuits using a 9V battery, so further smoothing is not required and didn't use the 100uF capacitor.

You mean the LEDs of the rain drop effect circuit are not running and stops at one LED ? Then you have to check the NE555 pulse generator circuit using a multimeter or simply using a LED.

You can replace C945 by BC547/548, but remember that their pin configuration is different. If you start from left hand side, C945 has E C B configuration while BC547 has C B E configuration. Connect it correctly. Good luck with your work.
Assume you are going to connect 20 LEDs per each output of the transistor, then you have to use five LED segments where four LEDs connected in series in each segment. Also use D400.
It depends upon the output switching transistor. For a 12V supply, you have to make segments by connecting four LEDs in series. C945 or C1815 can drive 5 segments (4×5 = 20 LEDs per one transistor) Use D400, BD139 or D313 for more LEDs or 12V LED strips.

Pins are not compatible.
1st circuit only supports CD4015 and 2nd CD4017

It is not possible to get only 6 outputs from CD4015.
Use CD4017 for any number of outputs from 2 to 10.
