These gliders are ballasted with water. They usually dump water before landing. Note at 3:16 - this is not a smoke coming out, it is the water being jettisoned. Air frame itself is feather light, most exotic materials.
No I know that I fly gliders too and I'm familiar with the procedure! I took it as the airframe itself (without the water ballast) is heavy but I see what you're saying!
