    I like a lot of your reviews, but after having played a spiritmaster nearly to rank 12, they are a great class to play in a single competitive group even outside of suppression line. They can easily fit in a full tank group if you utilize the pet to lock down a support, as well as utilizing a red dexquick aoe debuff which is instant cast and doesn't break cc. This debuff is amazing against enemy support which the spiritmaster only has for midgard realm, and it really helps tank oriented groups from being able to counteract high damage incoming from caster based enemy groups. Outside of running a solo caster, I've also had much pleasure running a hybrid group with a runemaster + sm combination with a runemaster debuffing enemies cold resists for me, and while the lifetap in the darkness line only has a 183 delve compared to the higher runemaster darkness nuke, it casts at a 2.5 rate. The lifetaps become almost a machine gun rate and also I should mention that a spiritmaster can be incredibly difficult for enemies to kill with an intercepting pet and if they have the realm rank, mastery of concentration + lifetap is a no brainer.
    So with that said, I completely disagree with how you rated the spiritmaster. I'd also wager that over the course of players figuring the game out and the mechanics, that the bonedancer is no longer irrelevant either. The bonedancer is insanely good in competitive if used right to interupt several enemies even better than what a shaman can even come close to entertaining. Their role however compared to a runemaster or spiritmaster however is not one of pure damage, but of more a support role of interupting, similar to how a theurgist works for albion if used correctly.

      The game has been figured out for 17 years... I don't personally agree with the "meta" of the private classic servers but that meta exists if you like it or not. If your group of mates has found a way to make a darkness SM work, then that's awesome. Glad to hear it. But the vast majority of the player base will not give a SM the light of day and that was, at least at the time, a simple fact of private server life and seeing how this is a guide aimed at new players I wanted to be sure that they know what they're getting into with what is most likely going to be their experience.

    I played Midgard back in the day. A lot of hunter class races were Norsemen. Mainly because many preferred sword over spear. If you wanted to be a spear hunter go kobold. If you wanted to be a sword hunter go Norseman. Spear was more about dex and sword more about strength. Although dex was best for bow. It was a preference style really but either build could be played well. Ah... those were the days! Go Clan Stormfist!

    • @RonOnTheWay
      @RonOnTheWay 5 років тому

      Way late, but I checked into this - dex naturally raises as a hunter. That's why spear is better.

      I know, and thank you :)
      I'm starting playing tomorrow night with friends. Could you answer some questions ahead of releasing your video?
      1. What is the best race and stat allocation for a Hero being used as a tank? I'm thinking Firbolg?
      2. Same question re Champions - and are they primarily 2h/debuffers or can they be viable anti-tanks? i.e. sword/board and debuff? I'm thinking Celt for this one.
      Thanks in advance!

    • @CloakingDonkey
      @CloakingDonkey  7 років тому

      1. Best race for Hero is Firbolg but the margin is much smallerr than with trolls. I would go 10 STR/DEX/QUI Standard for Hero is to go 50 Celtic Spear/Large Weapon 42 shield 39 weapon. If you want a pure tank build Lurikeen with 50 Pierce 50 Shield can also be decent but I wouldn't recommend it.
      2. Champions are sadly pretty awful with 2H weapons at this patch level. They are always a little more on the casual side for RvR because of their lack of Determination but they do make excellent shield tanks and are godly solo or in small man groups. If you want to go Blunt, then yes, Celt. Pierce champ is great with both Luri and Elf though, so whichever you prefer here really :D I would in general not use blades, they sadly aren't very good. The styles are awkward, with bad growth rates and Alb/Mid both have very good Slash resists. Blades can be nice while leveling because there's more drops and some quests but you certainly should swap it for Blunt/Pierce with your free line respec at 40

    • @hesketh7085
      @hesketh7085 7 років тому

      CloakingDonkey Thanks for that! You've given me some more questions :)
      1. What's the difference between Celtic Spear and Large Weapons? Which is preferable?
      1.a. If I can take 50/39 in 2 weapons, I take it I can be equally viable as a damage dealer and a tank?
      I'm not a fan of Luri/elf so wouldn't consider. Given what you've said then, do you think fir hero or celt champ is best for group tanking?
      and I presume blunt is best 1h skill for both based on what you've said? :)
      edit: when I referred to champs as anti-tanks I meant anti-paladin

    • @hesketh7085
      @hesketh7085 7 років тому

      Leaning towards a Celt Champion, with 50 Valor, 42 Shield, 39 Blunt(?) and the rest in Parry. Good idea do you reckon? If so, what starting stats would you suggest? Once I know this, I'm gonna create and get in game. The forums haven't really helped make my mind up - you're the most thorough presenter of information, so I trust your judgement :)

    Best race for Thanes is Norsemen. Thanes utilize shield a lot and need higher piety for spells. Trolls suck in both.
    The best class for Hunter is a tie between Kobold and Norsemen depending on playstyle. While Midgard archers are worst at shooting, they are the best in melee given their access to two-handed weapons and a pet. A well played melee hunter will ruin a day for any enemy assasin and Norsemen are the best melee hunters.

    It should be known that the auto train system on the Phoenix server has been updated to:
    The current autotraining system has been revised. It will no longer punish players who spend points early in their careers.
    - Characters will no longer auto train skills as they gain levels.
    - When training a skill that would normally have autotrained, a player will not be charged points up to their character level’s maximum autotrained skill level. Example: An Armsman who has zero slash at level 50 will not be charged for their first 12 points. After 12, they will be charged points normally for that skill.
    - If you have a higher skill than what would be awarded to you by autotraining at that level, the points that would have been awarded are refunded to your skill point pool. Example: If you have 40 slash, and you hit a level 48, you normally would have been autotrained to 12 slash. Since you have a higher slash than 12, those 12 points are refunded to your pool.
    - The skill points will be consistent if you train through a trainer or use a respec.

    I note you didn't mention those races and classes that came after Shrouded Isles. The Frostalfs and Minotaurs, which also were joined by the Valkyrie (female Viking class) and Warlocks (Mystic class), and Maulers.
    Is the Broadsword trial options only limited to the Shrouded Isles features?

    • @CloakingDonkey
      @CloakingDonkey  7 років тому

      These guides are for Classic Dark Age of Camelot which traditionally only includes the Shrouded Isles and Foundations expansions. It's not compatible with the current live servers.

    • @Charistoph
      @Charistoph 7 років тому

      Interesting, as Mythic made the rest of those expansions free over time if you had a paid account. I guess some people prefer their nostalgia glasses, but then why include Shrouded Isles for a truly classic option?
      As a point, I preferred my Theurgist Earth Elementals to taking a hit, since they are rock, but for a good time, both the Ice and Wind Elementals could take more hits than these clay elementals. And yes, I did play them before and after the change to that, but I haven't played since the current Elemental design was patched in Retail.

    I would like to try a live classic. but not just a roll back. perhaps some minor changes, and some not so minor. mostly to do with classes and the changes they made.
    making all classes viable, ie warden/friar. Adding celerity to all realms, and new RAs.

    I am still super disappointed Trolls can't be shadowblades. Look, sometimes I just want to backstab someone with a two handed axe, okay? (Though apparently that spec is bad, though nobody has ever explained why very well even though it saves an entire skill line)
    I mean, I have still backstabbed people with a two handed axe, but not with 100 base strength.

    • @CloakingDonkey
      @CloakingDonkey  7 років тому

      it's not necessarily "bad", Left Axe is just slightly better damage overall... I think... To be fair I was never that into assassin RvR so I might be hazy on a few details :D

    • @Skott62
      @Skott62 7 років тому

      left handed got nerfed badly though. Shadowblades in large droves quit the game when Mythic over did it. That is or was part of the problem. When Mythic nerfed a class, which they often did, it was some very nasty hard nerfing usually. Turned a lot of people away from the game.

  • @tysquirt111

    your information regarding Spiritmasters in RVR is very misleading. A dark spec SM is very powerful as a nuker, and has an amazing PBAOE mezz ability. They fit very well into most melee groups because of the utility built into them.

    • @CloakingDonkey
      @CloakingDonkey  7 років тому

      what utility? darkness AoE mezz is crap because it doesn't even last half as long as healer mezz (even if you went 50 darkness it only lasts 8 sec on a tank... lol). Pbaoe mezz lasts even shorter and it's still wank because you have 3 healers in the group, who have real mezzes and will be really pissed at you if you put immunities on the enemy with your crap mezz. All the resistance debuffs are useless because none of those damage types are prevalent in midgard... unless you're going to fill that melee group of yours with Thanes and Suppression BDs, they are pointless. And "very powerful nuker"? because of a 183D lifedrain that you DON'T have the resistance debuff for? Why would I not just take a darkness runemaster instead? 219D nuke, bubble, nearsight, 11DPS dmg add? Any of those are 10x more useful than your strongest asset, which is your pet. Pet alone however doesn't make a good class and nearsight doesn't have the 1 target restriction.
      I'm really sorry your favourite class isn't competitively useful, you can always join a casual group or a zerg and still have fun, but I'm not going to lie to new players who might care about min/maxing or might want a class that can do 8v8.

    • @tysquirt111
      @tysquirt111 7 років тому

      CloakingDonkey SM still has access to demezz, roots etc. and can serve as an effective support/nuker. I wholely agree that rune master is better, but Dark SM is still very useful. Only pac healer gets AoE mezz, and mid groups run with 1 Aug 1 pac typically. The demezz and ability to AE mezz is still very useful, and should not be discounted. Yes, darkness/supp RM is superior for most melee groups, but SM provides more leniency in PUGs

    • @CloakingDonkey
      @CloakingDonkey  7 років тому

      I don't see it, sorry. I mean these days most 8v8s seem to run with 3 healers anyway, so any weaker mezzes are just a liability... demezz is also not nearly as useful when you already have it on 3 other group members.

    • @tysquirt111
      @tysquirt111 7 років тому

      CloakingDonkey My guild prefers 2 healers, but Midgard has the benefit of flexibility in their 8v8 comps. I only wanted to point out that the information should be included, similar to how you mentioned Thanes. The class is a niche role, but it is still considered viable, more so than a bonedancer at least. I guess I have a less elitist mindset, but the goal should be class information. Plenty of the groups I know include a dark spec SM when they have no Runnie available.

    so why would you ever play savage over berserker?

    • @CloakingDonkey
      @CloakingDonkey  7 років тому

      style? wanting to be different? In case you like the self buff system and style variation over spamming Double Frost a lot? At 50, with gear and buffs, Savage does roughly the same damage as Berserker outside of Berserker rage... and sometimes the Quad Hits do some really nasty burst damage. Berserker absolutely has the upper hand while leveling though. It takes the savage quite a few levels to catch up in damage.

      I played one of the top savages in this game for many years. Savages out-perform Berserkers as long as they can keep their buffs up, which requires a good healer, or a short fight. Berserkers are long-term, consistent melee damage dealers, while Savages are short duration (30 seconds until RR 5) sprint-fighters. Two-handed savages are arguably the best melee in the game, check out "TheGood" troll savage video. ua-cam.com/video/1FNvVT-buvs/v-deo.html&t=

    • @CloakingDonkey
      @CloakingDonkey  5 років тому

      No I didn't say that at all. But not all of the classes have a place in group RvR. As in 8 man groups running around quasi dueling other 8 man groups. There are other forms of RvR practically any class can participate in. It's just that 8 man RvR is really really popular in the classic DAoC community. I was just trying to be open about it. Stealthers can have plenty of RvR... it's just a different kind of RvR.

    Do people seriously not run SM Bomb groups on uthgard? You stated that midgard is not set up well for it, back in classic it was by far the strongest realm for it. Healers with insta mez followed by AoE stun, we'd run 1 skald, 2 healers, and 5 SM's and absolutely destroy zergs.

    • @CloakingDonkey
      @CloakingDonkey  7 років тому

      everybody goes DET and Purge first these days and zergs very rarely have 1 stick leader anymore (better PCs and internet connections have rendered that pointless), bombs aren't bad but a lot of their strength back then, imo was more circumstantial than anything to do with specific mechanics. Also leveling bombs is insanely boring and you have to specifically build your groups, since you can't just join a melee group.
