One thing I can't get over is how realistic the movement is in DAOC, It feels like you actually have weight to your movements, it's not a bit floaty; you can't just start, and stop movement on a dime. The game actually feels ahead of it's time in that regard. Compared to say, gw2, gw2's movement, in pvp anyway, feels like a DOOM game or some other FPS from the 90's; there's literally no weight to your movements. From what i've seen some modern mmos are also floaty/unrealistic like that, so it makes the genre look like it has actually devolved in a way.
Absolutely. Another thing I love is, at least with midgard and Albion, a TON of the armor and weapons and environment details are based on real things from history.
So I'm giving this game a shot. I normally would just Google all my questions but information is limited or very old. I chose Hibernia because it seems the other realms are over populated. I also chose a melee class (Champion) because all I see are Mentalist, Enchanters, and Druids. So I hit level 5 but I honestly have no clue what to do, or no idea where to go. I don't dare try to get in a group because all I see are requests for Ments, Enchanters, Healers and Bards. So it would be great if you could make a video for starting a melee class. This starting sword is brutal :) Also, what I don't like is I can't try out any of these specs to see what is best. Once you make your decision it's final. I know there are some respecs at 20 and 40??? but the combinations are endless. As I said, a video would be great on something like this. I really need a weapon :)
the hib video is coming, beginner's guide and leveling guide are spot 2 and 3 in the queue so to speak =) For a Champion I would suggest going for Shield. Large Weapon sadly isn't very good as a Champion because of the reduced damage modifier for hybrid classes. Weapon choice depends on the race you chose, so I'd need to know that :D
yeah i was hopeing for the hib video too^^ i will tomorw realm switch and give the hibs a try too but would be nice to know where i can task there. On midgard i know the low lvl mobs task/quest so well that it takes me 12-15 hours for 1-20^^ but i dont know anything about hibs^^
Just a comment on social. I always heard the DAOC crowd was more mature, but I asked in chat, very politely mind you, if there was a mod or a way to change the font when you parry for example. I thought it was a legitimate question. I got ripped a new one. "It makes a sound and the character reacts a certain way. What more do you want?" I was like "well that will be the last question I ask" I just think the sound is very low and I find my myself staring at the combat logs looking for specific text to use reaction abilities. I was surprised to get a reaction like that as I worded it very nicely.
notta3d queuing abilities is the primary method to deal with this issue. When your attack speed increases, your increases attack animation will cut the parry animation short, so watching for a parry can become an issue, and reacting to it, cumbersome. you'll want a good "any time" style, which has no prerequisites like being behind a target or having to block first, in addition to your parry style. if you set them on your hotbar as #1 (any time) and #2 (parry), you can queue your parry style then your any-time style so that your character will fight a bit more intelligently. you'll press 2 then 1, instead of just 1, and that will basically tell the game "if I parry, use #2. if I don't parry, use #1". this works because the game will check for a parry before using the ability, and if it doesn't see a parry, it will tell you that you failed to use the parry style. if you have an ability queue, the game checks both each attack, in the order that you pressed them. if the first fails, it looks to the second. if the second is an any-time, it will use that without issue (aside from your basic miss chance or the event blocking you, etc)
The community is really good on the live servers still last time I was on it was 2015, on all the private servers, the community has been shit for the most part, when I tried them back in 2014-2016 whether it was uthgard, or genesis. Mind you I haven't tried the new Uthgard, maybe the community has improved, and the new Origins will hopefully have a good community. The original DAOC community was awesome, it was very similar to GW2's community on all the servers I had been on. The problem with playing on the live servers, is the mechanics are inferior, due to the devs screwing the game up over time. Strange how official FTP games can have good communities, but actual private servers often have horrible communities.
Should really work on cleaning up your UI. The way you have it setup makes the game look a lot more clunky than it already is. Absolutely no need to have your combat win and/or main window to be THAT big.
there's absolutely a point to it. I work on the PC literally all day. Doing excel sheets, writing reports, editing audio and video projects... I cannot have any more unnecessary strain on my eyes. This way I can read comfortably :D
sure but then it takes 1 or 2 lines to push stuff out of the window again. I honestly don't see your problem. Isn't the point of a customizable UI that I can set it up how I want?

Its great to see such an effort in a old yet very beloved game, props to you! Thumbs up :)

Lovely outlines..
But you bypass level 20 BG Thidranki..
One of the great BG's in the game
If Broadsword makes a classic server, that is fraction locked, i'll come back to play.
uthgard.org lul
Awesome info! Wish I actually made this video :-P Are you on Uthgard now ?
thanks! and yes I am. Playing hib though cause Underdog, hoooo! ^^
Heck ... I would start all over on hib side to play a Valewalker :-)
So I have downloaded the unnamed server, but in a bout with indecision I couldn't decide what class to make haha.
Are you playing on an official server, Uthgard, something else?
These guides should easily apply to any Classic DAoC ruleset. I tried to make them as future proof as possible :D
A bit granular for my liking IMO.

you can have the font big w/out having the UI take up 1/5 of the screen.
