- The threadfin or featherfin Rainbow fish, Iriatherina werneri is a delicate, beautiful fish that make a great addition to the #plantedaquarium. These little fish are peaceful, relatively easy to keep and look like nothing else in the aquatic world. In this Fincast, John shows you the school in his aquarium and tells you how to tell males from females, the best water parameters and tank mates.

I have a community tank with 7 of these boys, I feed them brine shrimp though and their colouration is rediculous in my tank! My absolute favourite fish ever. Hard to bring home, they do stress out in transport and if you lose any it's usually within the first 48 hours but once they're comfortable they don't stop displaying and showing off. Beauties and not as shy as you might think for such a small rainbowfish
Very informative. Thank you.
Thanks for this video! Great content and very informative. This channel deserves way more subs.

Hi John thanks for a great new post and Happy Thanksgiving from my family here in UK.
Very informative! Looking into getting a small school of these.
Thank you!
You're very welcome.
Great Chanel! Thanks for the plethora of information you share with us 🙏🏻
OMG it was so detail, thank u very much
I love fish with long fins that's a fish that really got me I think I'm gonna have them in my planted community tank which I keep dreaming about, let's hope it won't take much longer until I actually buy it and start setting it up.
+asher ekstein good luck. You will love this fish.
To bring out the color, in addition to your dry foods, you have to feed live foods, daphnia, small worms etc...
Just bought one yesterday. One of my favorite fish along with the checkered rainbowfish, guppies, black emperor tetras, and the pearl gourami. The Threadfin really likes to hang out with the scissortail rasboras. What is the fish in the bottom left corner at 7:33? Some kind of tetra?
First of all, thanks for the great info and clips and pictures.
Maybe a longshot, don't know if you see this, but at 5:44 there is another red-ish fish on the left bottom and I was wondering what kind of fish that is...
Does anyone know?
I know you posted this a year ago, but it is a snakeskin barb
@@Secretsaver nonetheless, thank you very much for your reply...
A year later and we're thinking of starting another tank, so very much appreciated!
I use extreme flake and pellets for my praecox rainbows and denison barbs
i plant o put in my 10 gallon planted tank with glowlight danios. 6 of each.
Lovely fish .a bit like zebra they don't stop I. Have long fin zebra . And mino
So true!
Can they be kept with Dwarf Gourami (1 Fire, 1 Blue and Red Striped, and 2 small Honey), Angelfish (getting too large to keep), and 2 Bleeding Heart Tetras in a 20 gal. Tall? Probably after I find a home for the Angel. 😇
Sounds like that tank is full. Those fish will go together ok in a larger tank tho.
dear sir, I have thread fin tetras. an like you when I saw them I had to have them.. My question is have you breed the thread fin ? an if yes. how did you do? thanks m. kilpatrick, a.k.a. BEESTING.
Hi Mark. I have not attempted to breed them. Yet.
I know this was a few years ago, but did you ever find that the water parameters were off with a single canister filter?
Can they be put with neon tetras in a 20 gallon high with a betta
How’s the breading tricks???? 🥺🥺🥺🥺 please please tell me 🥺🥺🥺😭
4 females now (just added em a week ago)with 10 males..the males are tearin each other up..a couple are untouched but they are fine nippin a lot
frozen daphnia is a great food choice.
Any chance you could post somewhere what types of fish and quantities of each in case we wanted to set up something similar to this ?
Hi Chris -- Sure. This is a 55 gallon aquarium. Natural plants are a key to success. If you watch the video on the set up of this tank, you will see that I am running two canister filters, which helps me increase the number of fish. This tank has 5 neon tetras, four apistogrammas, approx 10 plecos, (4 clown, one snakeskin, one royal, four bristle nose, one angelicas) 9 Threadfin rainbowfish, 5 cory catfish, one penguin tetra, 7 snakeskin barbs. I'm pretty sure that's it. I do 20-percent weekly water changes, which also helps me with this heavy bio load of fish. Does this help?
fincasters thanks for the update, that's a crazy amount of fish for that size tank. I would have thought you would need twice the size tank that you have but I guess it's all about the filtration you have set up. The tank looks great though and I might try something similar with my new 40 I'm getting (the aquascaping that is, not the bioload lol)
What are the long thin-leaved plants?
I bought 8 males but the back tail fin on mine are not trailing like the ones here..strains?
Quite possible -- or Age. I also found that after a while there was a dominant male that was prettier than the others. Seemed like his fins grew longer faster than the others. Do you have at least one female in the group?
I want these bad....I just have praecox rainbows now
What is that thread-like flowing plant in the tank?

Rainbow fish get depression 😂
