- During the Daytona 500 race, Cole's (Tom Cruise) car is spun out by Russ (Cary Elwes) and suffers a malfunctioning transmission, but the combined efforts of Harry's (Robert Duvall) and Daland's (Randy Quaid) pit crews manage to fix the problem and get Cole back on the lead lap.

can the race mechanics actually go under the car and "adjust linkage rods" to give Cole only the high gears? Im sure the transmission is totally sealed... am i wrong?

LOL all the comments talking about he couldn't speed up with just high gear. I grew up watching them win races with fucked transmissions and only high gear all of the time. I know Alan Kulwicki did it at least once. Even pitted twice with only 4th gear. People that didn't watch old school stock car racing don't understand how common this was back then.
You can, but as they illustrated in the movie it's tough to take off from a stop in high gear, so they had to get some speed.
@@channell11 That wasn't as big of an issue back in the day because people could be on different pit cycles and pitting actually happened under green for normal stops. Also at most tracks they are geared so you're in 4th gear all of the time after you upshift through the gears the first time.
Don't get me wrong it is harder to get going from standing still but it isn't that big of an issue. You're talking about maybe a 3-15 seconds time lost (closer to 3 at any track that isn't Dega and Daytona). 3 seconds was smaller than the difference between top tier pit crews and back marker pit crews back then as well. Plus pitstops were closer to 20-25 seconds total and if you go way back there wasn't even a pit road speed limit. It was easier to make up any time lost if the driver or crew was really good.
The situation in the movie isn't even unique. Dale Earnhardt did the same thing in an ARCA race once.
I'm just surprised so many people mentioned it at all. As broken transmissions were really common back then and it wasn't unusual for people to nurse cars around for hundreds of laps using one high gear. If you knew the transmission was fucked you put it in 4th and didn't touch the stick for the rest of the day for fear of losing high gear all together.

Reminds me of driving to work on 465 at 7:30am or 11:30am or 1:30pm or what the f ever time it is. Doesn't matter. Too much traffic and everybody drives like A- holes. Especially chick drivers. They're the most aggressive most reckless drivers on the road.
Give 495 in the DC area a chance sometime, especially during rush hour. DC101, a local radio station, used to host a race between one of their DJs vs that year’s NASCAR champion.

Fun fact. The cars are so dirty due to the film crew spraying brown hair dye all over the cars. They wanted the appearance of dirty oil and tires but I’ve always thought they way overdid it.

It wasn't the transmission, it was the linkage. So they left it in high gear.

I had a truck where the linkage would bind up. Always had to crawl under the truck at the most inconvenient time
Even if that happened, no way in hell he can speed up that fast being already in 4th or even 3rd gear.

So I thought he stole the engine from the car that blows the engine in the beginning of the race. I thought the reason that engine blew was because it was their engine that was leaking when harry was talking to the car in the garage.

@@brianschaffer9220 The pace car sets the speed at about 45 mph. He's going to be beating up the clutch, but it's possible.
