after a decent but underwhelming rookie campaign, Volpe is having a sophomore resurgence and coming out as one of the premier shortstops in all of baseball on both sides of the ball

You can't buy a World Series anymore. This isn't the 2000s when teams spent money on free agents to try and win a championship. You have to develop prospects and build a farm system with great players to bring up to major league team.
Dodgers spent 1M on two Japanese superstars. They always spent money wirh highest payroll. They never win. That team got lucky during the pandemic when they won the 60 game shortened season. It would be a bust this season if Dodgers don't win with the money spent.

@Tonyconstanza They have a chance to repeat next season. Most of the team will be back along with Scherzer when he returns late in season from surgery. But Astros will be tough in same division. Rangers can still make playoffs as a wild card if they don't take the division.
@Tonyconstanza Also most of those players came late in their careers. Marcus Semien & Corey Seager were already in the league for a long time prior to them signing but they were cheaper compared to a free agent superstar player on the market.
You can still win a World Series with free agency but it takes more than that to build a team that can win. Still need top players from farm system that are highly touted prospects that can help the team for a long time and develop into superstars.
