ive been building n54s forever, and b58s for about 4 years now. some advice, build an 54 car before you venture into the b58 cars , for 6k you can build a wet sleeved n54 long block, fire finged and setup for 625 studs, stock n54 head, upgrade valvesprings for $600 and that block will handle 1000whp all day long. delete the index 12 direct injection on the n54, its CHEAPER to buy maxxecu standalone ecu with harness and some port injection than it is to replace index12s. you can 8hp70 swap a 335i for under $4000 and upgrade cluthces in it for 500 bucks, hold 1000whp all day long. my 1100whp 8hp75 335i outruns a 1100whp b58 a90 (i own both). you can literally run just as fast as b58 with an n54 for 1/3 the price to build for parts, and the cars are literally dirt cheap. n54s are cheap as k series to build now per cylinder. im 30-35k into my 335 including cost of the car and half of that is the pure drivetrain solutions trans build and theres not a b58 car on the planet other than mikes a90 that can come close to my car. this winter im going 7.70s
A lot of people really love the ZF auto on the b58 cars. It can be customised so much, feels very stable up to 700 hp and feels a bit like a dual clutch
i have a pure drivetrain solutions stage 2 zf8hp75 swapped into my e92 335i.. wet sleeved block, stroker kit, cams, n53 head swap, 625 studs, fire ringed etc. cost me $8500 to build the engine $4500 for turbo kit and parts, $4000 for standalone trans controller, maxxecu, and fueling. bought the car for $1400 with blown turbos. the trans was 15k fully built with 5k rpm stall. i might have $3000 in wheels, tires, suspension etc. total cost of the build is just about 35k. i just made 1100whp throught he 8hp75 and my car isnt even stressing to make that power. for 35k you can buy a used b58 car, do downpipe tune. i have 15k miles on my high compression n54 with 8hp swap and it drives like a brand new 8 speed bmw. 0 n54 issues, no leaks, no misfires, no issues with knock etc. i had the stock n54 engine with the 8hp75, full weight at 720whp and i was running side by side with our 800hp a90 supra. for 1/3 the price.
you can buy clutches for the 8hp transmissions for like 500 dollars and hold 800ft lbs all day long i have build several of them if you need any info@@Juanscars
N54 gang here, but I love the b58. I'd say, you are a very patient man for keeping the boost conservative until you have a built engine! Most people would want to send it, but I also don't want to blow my engine up, so I think I'm going to do what you do, and keep my car under 24psi/550hp when I upgrade my turbos. The turbo upgrade is $4-7gs easy, but to truly take advantage of it, you really need to fork over another $6-8gs to build the engine (if someone else builds it) so it's a game of, "how patient and mechanically sympathetic am I?"
I been thinking about getting rid of my pure stage 2 335xi and going to a b58. But damn it's so hard to sell off one of the most sexy cars ever built. The feeling of connectedness with the road in this car is second to nothing I have ever driven. With awd if puts it down from 1st like a boss. I can't imagine using much more than this on public roads lol I don't know of much that can hang around here. I have pretty much rebuilt everything at this point, but we know how it goes lol we get bored and want to build something again.
I have a e90 N54 top mount with a 6266. Simple build DI only on E30 pushing 20psi. It’s fast enough for the streets. Pulls crazy hard and beats 90% of the cars on the street. I don’t need to push over 700 hp, I’m happy with 500 whp safe reliable power.

When you setup an n54 properly, it will make just as much power and be just as reliable. The suspension geometry is EXTREMELY similar (almost the same). The n54 bang for buck is unbeatable. Also n55 EWG cars are pretty damn good too ( f series/late year motors)
@@Juanscars issue with early n55 cars. Not the newer EWG cars. The f series n55s are a lot closer to an s55 with different turbo setup and a bottom end not as robust but can still take quite a lot
A month ago I got white on whites interior e93 n54 auto from old gentleman for 10k $ fully stock clean title car with 43k original miles, it’s in brand new condition… I feel guilty to modify it lol. Most likely will keep it stock as weekend car
So tempted to sell my N54. It’s giving me a plethora of issues that I’ve constantly had to pour money into. Now my turbos are showing signs of failure at 74k! Doing my trans service on my ZF6 soon, then turbos. But really tempted to just sell this and put a down payment on a B58.
From the information I've heard and seen the manuals in these cars can handle over 1000 hp easily with a good clutch. Mind you you do have to put in z high quality clutch if you want it to go over the 700hp or so mark.
11:30-35 e90 335 FTW! in all seriousness both cars are extremely cabable but god what i would do to get one of those zf 8 speeds in my e90 😂 that trans is really what makes the newer bimmers worth it imo
You should look into a cam. I hear it’s going to make the awesome cam for the Anthony Ford games like 40 hp just off the cam and torque. And sound better.
N54 was on the 2013 335is. I think it was on the 2014 Z4 S Drive 35is too, but without the pony radiator as there never was enough room. F30 okay, but for a B58 I would go for a G30 340i either the requisite cold pack to get the LSD. MFactory LSD with M3 bushings and arms were necessary to get handling where I wanted on my 335is. Seats are better in the E92 and the size is right compared to later F and G versions unless you haul 4 people a lot.
Great points, I completely forgot about the 2013 335is being n54 those are hard to find. I had a 2009 z4 35is and had no idea they had the same motor for so long, thanks for the knowledge
I believe bearings and other crucial parts of rotating assembly are coated/treated to accommodate stop/start on b58. A by product of this is better longevity I guess?
The current major problem with the N54 is those damn direct injectors. $3.4k USD for index 12's is crazy, and if you buy any below 12 they will go to sht.
The 6 speed 45bz in the 340 won’t take more that 600whp long. 53bz in the n54 is known to take 1000whp without being cracked open. Sucks there not stronger manual trans you can swap into a b58 since starter is on the bottom. Hope the Supra trans hood or might have to get a 6 speed attached to a n57
cant forget to mention the b58 is closed deck whereas the n54 is not, the b58s block is actually designed around the diesel variant which is why its capable of 1000hp+
N54 is way to problematic and expensive to maintain 3k for injectors makes no sense can literally forged a n55 for that money and have the more reliable engine. B58 obviously is the greatest engine of the last 30 years so its a no brainer
Dct smacks gears harder, but is it really faster? Dct can be so aggressive it can upset a lot.. in terms of time, pulling, just laying the foot down and go. I’d say zf is better. It’s quick in picking up the next gear but it’s subtle in engagement.. it won’t upset the rearend and stays pretty consistent all the way through. Just my opinion.
When my n54 dies, I'll be looking into a b58 conversion. E92 just looks to damn good!
Anyone who has done this conversion? I want to get pre owned 135 with n54 and swap with b58
