  • How are we to understand Mary's motherhood when it comes to Jesus?
Catholics, Orthodox, and many Protestants call Mary the "Mother of God," while others are greatly offended by this title. Where does this idea come from? Is it biblical? Is it heresy? In this video former Protestant Pastor and Catholic convert Keith Nester makes the case that in fact, she is. What do you think?

mary mother of jesus , how can mary be mother of her own creator, as for Luke 1 : 43, And how has it happened to me , that the mother of my Lord would come to me , so you elevate mary to mother of God from this , ridiculous, remember Elizabeth was filled with the Holy spirit, she was proclaiming who was in the womb rather than elevating mary, The revelation was the second person of the trinity was in the womb, jesus, truly God truly man , was a man in all aspects, yet fully Divine, so mary was mother of the flesh , not the divine nature of christ, its biblical to call mary, the mother of jesus, not the mother of God, jesus had two natures in one body, mary was the mother of the flesh,

    • @littlehouseofpoverty6788
      @littlehouseofpoverty6788 Рік тому +5

@@garyholian3552 sadly, your reasoning risks falling into heresies of the past. Scripture you quoted states that Elizabeth, calls Mary the mother of her Lord. To say that Mary did not give birth to both natures of Jesus logically leads to that at some point the person of Jesus did not have both natures (divine and human). This argumentation could then lead someone to believe that person of Jesus, who has ascended into heaven (bodily resurrection), who sits at the right hand of the Father, now makes technically the fourth person of the Trinity.
To understand that there are Three persons of the Holy Trinity acknowledging that the Second Person of the Trinity is the God-man, Jesus Christ means that at no point in the human life of Jesus (moment of conception) was He ever NOT both human & Divine. Thus, Mary having given birth to Jesus is Mother of God: being mother does not imply she created her creator.
I apologize but this arena does not leave much room to discuss but May I suggest a longer video on this to watch by Fr Chris Alar from the Marian’s in Stockbridge, Ma who published a video on December 31,2022. May God bless you and keep you.

When I was an Evangelical, I reject the title Mother of God with little thought, not realizing that I was holding a contradictory belief claiming to also believe in the Trinity. If Jesus is “God the Son”, then Mary must be the mother of God. The only way she is not is if Jesus not God.

Then to top it off, they go in to blatant heresy by separating Jesus in to human and God like 50/50 but He is fully God and fully human. I believe they're so far gone that they will try to argue with God himself at the judgement.

If Jesus is 100% God (he is), then by logical extension he is 100% the Holy Spirit as well because the Holy Spirit is fully the God and vice versa. Therefore what Mary gave birth to is 100% God, 100% Jesus, and 100% the holy spirit. There is no other name for that except the Trinity. When one says "Mary mother of God" that person is saying Mary mother of the trinity even if you think you are not and even if you don't intend to.

I am a believer. I am neither Protestant or Catholic I see no such labels in the bible. I see that followers of Christ are asked to put on a new nature and become a partaker of Christ allowing that new nature to dominate in all that they do and say. I have never thought of Catholics as believing that Mary is Mother of the Trinity so be careful of generalizations. I believe that Catholics will do well to say what they mean rather than argue the same lines back and forth. For example: When we say that Mary is the Mother of God, what we mean is..... ( that approach lessens misunderstandings and provides an excellent platform for futher discussions) But maybe that is not the goal. Bashing one another, calling one another ignorant, blind, heritcs in no way promotes the Kingdom of God. Are we not all blind in some part of our lives or another? I am. The key is treating one another with respect as we entreat the other to come into a more complete knowledge of the Christ.

Where do you get that idea from? I have never believe that so you are making a generalization and just how you dont want generalizations about Catholics, you should desist. I believe that I am God's child. Absolutely. But the gospel says: " I have sheep that is not of this fold," What does that mean to you? I believe that in many denominations/ religious people groups/ that there are seekers of the TRUTH, God through Christ has made a promise to them: IF YOU SEEK ME, YOU WILL FIND ME. I believe such people will come to salvation not because of a denomination but because of a relationship with Christ. I believe all / yes in all people groups there are the true and the false. How else would you explain the Catholic priest and Protestant pastors that molests peoples children? Hmmm...But men's failiures dont mean God has failed. Exactly. So we each have to work out our own salvation and make sure that we are doing not what the group is doing but what God is calling YOU and I to do? What is God calling you to do for him in the last days before his coming? Do you have a personal relaionship with him? Do you know that should you die tonight you will see his face? These issues are more important than anyone's view of Mary. For sure, Mary is with God. Let us make sure we are with him in death.

@Rowena Andres. Mary’s sinlessness is in the bible. In 2 Sam 6:6
When they came to the threshing floor of Nakon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled.
The Lord’s anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down, and he died there beside the ark of God.
The Old Ark carried the Word of God in stone. Uzzah who is unworthy, touched the Old Ark and was killed by God for desecrating the Old Ark whose holiness and sanctity needs to be preserved.
Mary, carried the Word of God in Flesh - Jesus. She must be similarly holy and sanctified in order to carry the Word of God in Flesh for 9 months. Jesus is God and is holy. He cannot reside in a sinful vessel for 9 months. Mary, just like the Old Ark is holy, holy and holy. God would preserve its holiness and sanctity.
Jesus has to be born as a human to represent the human race in the everlasting New Covenant with God. Mary gave Jesus His human DNA. Jesus is holy. Mary is thus sinless. Mary needed Jesus to be sinless. It is because of all the above, Mary is sinless and holy.

Why does that make you sad? Moses, Abraham, Joshua, the desciples and many great men and women of God were obedient to his call, served their time and moved off the scene. Except that Mary is the 4th person in the God head why are you saddened , that Mary heard God, obeyed God like a faithful Jewish girl and then moved off the scene. Why I ask has she been given these titles that should only be given to Christ? I am constantly trying to understand that. She is called Advocate, Intercessor, Gate (another word for door) , Queen of Peace, Morning Star, Mother of perpetual help etc. These titles absolutely are titles given to christ. Besides, the Holy Spirit is our perpetual help. I dont understand. Catholics say they do not pray to Mary then they invoke her in all these capacities. Is that not prayer? And because they say they are not praying does that mean they are not PRAYING? Or, they have been told so often that they are not praying that they believe they are not praying they are JUST HONORING MARY. This my friend must be what confuses the PROTESTANT. Mary is the mother of the Lord (LUKE 1:43). Kyrios / Lord is how the jews called God. Jesus means GOD SAVES or GOD THE SAVIOR in Hebrew, that is why Mary is the mother of GOD THE SAVIOR. He is also called "IMMANUEL" in the Book of Isaiah 7:14 meaning GOD WITH US in Hebrew, this is why Mary is the true mother of God ! God chose to have a mother in the bubble of space and time, God humbled himself to the world, men and angels. PHIL 2:6-8 ; HEB 2:9
PHILIPPIANS 2:6-8 6 Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men, and in habit found as a man. 8 He humbled himself, becoming obedient unto death, even to the death of the cross.
HEBREWS 2:9 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour: that, through the grace of God, he might taste death for all.
Jesus is God ! The Trinity is inseparable. God chose to have a mother read LUKE 1 ! Are you making Elizabeth a liar when she said that Jesus is His Lord in LUKE 1:43 when she met Mary was about to approach her ? LUKE 1:43 [ And whence is this to me, that THE MOTHER OF MY LORD should come to me? ]
The Lord Jesus Christ has a mother and He is God, so the Lord God Jesus Christ has a mother. When the Lord Jesus Christ was born by Mary, He is no longer simply Jesus as God, but rather, He became Jesus as God who became Man (JOHN 1:14) or Jesus as God who was manifested in the flesh (1 TIMOTHY 3:16).
Jesus as God who became Man or Jesus as God who was manifested in the flesh has to have a mother, for otherwise, how will Jesus as God become Man or manifest in the flesh if He has no mother?
And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: and she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among WOMEN, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. And whence is this to me, that the MOTHER OF MY LORD should come to me? (LUKE 1:41-43)
Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. (1 CORINTHIANS 12:3-5)
Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord: and thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. (DEUTERONOMY 6:4-5)
But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him. (1 CORINTHIANS 8:6 )
And Thomas answered and said unto him, MY LORD AND MY GOD. Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. (JOHN 20:28-29)
(DEUTERONOMY 10:17) “For the LORD your God is God of gods, and Lord of lords, a great God, a mighty, and a terrible, which regardeth not persons, nor taketh reward”
LUKE 1:43 REFERS TO THE JESUS WHO IS “THE” LORD, MEANING THE GREATEST AND THE HIGHEST OF ALL LORDS. THE SUPREME AUTHORITY OVER ALL:
REVELATION 19:16 “And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
1 TIMOTHY 6:14-15 “That thou keep this commandment without spot, unrebukeable, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ: Which in his times he shall shew, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords”
REVELATION 17:14 “These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them: for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings: and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.”
PHILIPPIANS 2:10-11 “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Jesus Christ is God. Women who bear people are called mothers. If the person a woman bears is God, then, consequently, the woman is the Mother of God. It’s that simple.
Jesus Christ is God. Women who bear people are called mothers. If the person a woman bears is God, then, consequently, the woman is the Mother of God. It’s that simple. Now, dingbats claims that Jesus’ divine nature had no mother. This is true, of course, but the Church does not teach otherwise. We say that Mary is the Mother of God; mothers are not mothers of natures, but of persons, and Jesus was a divine person who took on a human nature.
Was your mother the mother of your human nature? No, she was the
mother of you. It is a person who is conceived and born, not a nature [only]. What
person was born of Mary? A divine Person only--not a human person--but a divine
Person who took on human nature. The one born of Mary “shall be called the son
of God” (Lk 1:35), and “God sent his son, made of a woman” (Gal 4:4). [2]
German reformer Martin Luther's (1483-1546) writings often address the subject of Mary: On the Divine Motherhood of Mary, he wrote
In this work whereby she was made the Mother of God, so many and such great good things were given her that no one can grasp them. ... Not only was Mary the mother of him who is born [in Bethlehem], but of him who, before the world, was eternally born of the Father, from a Mother in time and at the same time man and God. (Weimer's The Works of Luther, English translation by Pelikan, Concordia, St. Louis, v. 7, p. 572.)
John Calvin (1509-1564) also held that Mary was the Mother of God
It cannot be denied that God in choosing and destining Mary to be the Mother of his Son, granted her the highest honor. ... Elizabeth called Mary Mother of the Lord, because the unity of the person in the two natures of Christ was such that she could have said that the mortal man engendered in the womb of Mary was at the same time the eternal God
Ulrich Zwingli (1484-1531), wrote, on the divine motherhood of Mary:
It was given to her what belongs to no creature, that in the flesh she should bring forth the Son of God
    Mt 1:18-25
Now this is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found with child through the holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, since he was a righteous man, yet unwilling to expose her to shame, decided to divorce her quietly. Such was his intention when, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary your wife into your home. For it is through the holy Spirit that this child has been conceived in her. She will bear a son and you are to name him Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins." All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel," which means "God is with us." When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife into his home. He had no relations with her until she bore a son, and he named him Jesus.

When addressing the Pharisees, He asked them: “‘What do you think about the Christ? Whose Son is He?’ They said to Him, ‘The son of David.’ He said to them, ‘How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’…. If David then calls Him ‘Lord,’ how is He his Son?’” (Matthew 22:42-45, emp. added). The Pharisees failed to answer the question correctly because they were thinking about the physical nature of the Messiah. While Christ was a physical descendant of David (cf. Luke 1:32; Matthew 1:1), according to His divine nature He did not have a physical father, since He Himself is before all (John 8:58). In the same way that David could not be the father of the divine Messiah since he called Him “Lord,” Mary cannot be the “Mother of God” since she calls Him “Lord” in Luke 1:38,46-47. The truth is, as Paul explains, “according to the flesh, Christ came” through the patriarchs, David, and, yes, Mary, but according to His deity, He is the “eternally blessed God” who is over all

Mary is the Mother of God, and here's why:
      1. All persons of the Trinity are fully God and not parts of God. The Father is fully God, the Son is fully God, and the Holy Ghost is fully God.
      2. What is the incarnation? The incarnation is when the Son of God, the Second Person of the Trinity, took on human nature and became man. Therefore, the person of Jesus has two natures, a divine nature, and a human nature. This makes Jesus one divine person and therefore God.
      3. What is a mother? A mother is a person who carries (is pregnant with) and gives birth to a human person (not a nature). Since Mary carried and gave birth to the person of Jesus, this makes Mary the mother of Jesus. And since the person of Jesus is God, this means that Mary carried and gave birth to God. And if Mary carried and gave birth to God, this means that Mary is the Mother of God.

Catholics worship Mary, claiming that she has “divine maternity” (“Dogmatic Constitution…,” 1964, 8.3). But if Mary is to be worshipped as the “Mother of God,” we should expect to find a biblical command to do so, or a biblical example of approved action. However, such commands and examples are nowhere to be found. From the first moment Mary appears in the biblical record, there is no indication of her being the object of worship of any kind. When God’s angel announced to Mary that she would give birth to the Messiah, the heavenly messenger did not worship her (Luke 1:26-38). The shepherds, who came to the stable, praised God-not Mary-for what they had witnessed (Luke 2:16-20). Later, the wise men came to a house and “saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him” (Matthew 2:11, emp. added)-not Mary. Simeon and Anna, who had waited their entire lives for the Messiah, recognized Jesus as the One sent by God. They did not offer any special acknowledgement or praise to Mary (Luke 2:21-38). Additionally, Jesus’ disciples never gave Mary any preeminence during their gatherings, much less worshipped her as the “Mother of God” (cf. Acts 1:14-26).

Yes, GOD cannot literally have a mother, but *GOD through Elizabeth had declared Mary "mother of the LORD"* in Lk 1:41-44 - that aside from the truth that Mary was literally to be a mother by giving birth to CHRIST JESUS who is GOD.
Do you think that Elizabeth, who was not even a prophetess, could had known that the baby in Mary's womb was her LORD if not *through THE HOLY SPIRIT?* Note that at the very outset of the Holy Bible, *GOD, LORD GOD, and "LORD"* refer to one and the same *SUPREME BEING.*
Do you think that the baby in Elizabeth's womb, then with still undeveloped physical, emotional, and intellectual faculties, could had recognized the LORD CHRIST JESUS that he leaped for joy, if not *through THE HOLY SPIRIT?*

Whose Son is He?’ They said to Him, ‘The son of David.’ He said to them, ‘How then does David in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord’…. *You totally missed it!*
The point is *neither* about Elizabeth's, *nor* Mary's, *nor* anybody's righteousness, but Elizabeth *being bereft of any prophetic gift to know anything* about Mary's conceiving of Jesus, *most especially His divinity,* and hence, *Elizabeth being obviously made the medium through which THE HOLY SPIRIT declared Mary the "mother of the LORD".*
And where did you read that "Mary was *not righteous* before GOD"? Mary had been prophesied both in O.T. & N.T. (Lk 2:34-35), and even declared fully blessed by GOD (see Lk 11:28 in relation to Lk 1:28 & 45). So now, don't tell me (as others do) that Mary was being rebuked in Lk 11:27-28, for it was the woman shouting who was rebuked for failing to grasp CHRIST's words in the preceeding verses - note that Lk 11:27 starts with, "While he was saying this (so CHRIST was then preaching) a woman from the crowd raised her voice ...". In reply, CHRIST impliedly told that woman and the crowd, that Mary was *"r_a_t_h_e_r blessed for hearing and keeping the word of GOD than for having birthed and nursed Him, and for them to likewise hear and keep the word(s) of GOD to be blessed".*
      Here is one biblical fact.
*Mary gave birth to CHRIST JESUS, and that undeniably makes Him her Son (Mt 1:16),* not withstanding that His earthly existence was neither due to creation nor procreation. Joseph, who was a descendant of David, was not the biological father (no procreation) of JESUS - hence, CHRIST was not a physical descendant of David (as you have otherwise said, citing Lk 1:32 & Mt 1:1). Joseph was only the *legal* father (i.e., foster paternity) of JESUS - see Mt 1:16 where it only says, "... Joseph the husband of Mary ..." and *not Joseph the father of Jesus.* CHRIST, on the other hand, was/is a physical descendant of Mary ("It was of her that Jesus who is called the Messiah was born", says Mt 1:16). So Mary is still "the mother of the LORD" even if she calls Him "LORD".
With due respect, are you a Christian (meaning one who believes in THE HOLY TRINITY)?
Has it never occurred in your mind that Mary was relating to or referring to THE FATHER (in Lk 1:38, and especially in Lk 1:46-55)?
      *Peace and GOD bless*

Is it possible that because he was never born of a man impregnating a woman, he had no sin in his flesh, compared to us. Maybe it's not about the flesh itself but about the sin in the flesh (which we all have). Jesus was able to sin, just did not. Which in that case, means his flesh and blood were enough for us on the cross. Please comment because i would like to learn more.
