Attempt at Explaining Live Synth Rig

  • After posting a picture of my live rig on a few different Facebook groups, some people were asking for an explanation of what's doing what. Instead of typing it all out (cuz I'm lazy), I decided to make a video instead. The video is raw, unedited, and unplanned, so don't expect anything pretty; hopefully you find it informative.
So here it is, a (not so) quick and dirty attempt at explaining how I use the following gear:
    -Korg Kronos 2 88
    -ROLI Seaboard Rise 49
    -Korg NanoPAD2
    -Korg NanoKONTROL2
    -Keith McMillen K-Board
    -Alesis Vortex Wireless 2
    -MRT Breath Controller
    -Behringer XR18
    -iPad Pro 12.9
-Surface Pro 2 running Bitwig Studio
-Surface Pro 2017 runnnig Cantabile Performer (VST host)
    -TC Helicon VoiceWorks
    -iConnectivity iConnectMIDI4+
-and a bunch of other miscellaneous stuff like pedals, usb hosts, SSDs, and so on
Let me know if you have any questions, and I'll do my best to answer them, or make something up.
    Thanks for watching!

This is a SLICK rig. As a traditionally vintage-keys sort of player who has been branching out into virtual instruments and sample triggering, there's a lot to learn here. Also, you clearly know how to make the most of all your toys musically, which is the most important thing. Thank you for sharing!

It's the most superb Rig I saw up til now. Not to big not to small. I have two questions: can you specify the connection between Kronos and korg nano for trigering samples? And if not asking you too much can you make a simple demo live with a real song in a stage real situation. Here the old man apreciates Ok. Peace to all of you.

Thank you! The Kronos recognizes the NanoPad natively. All I did here is route the NanoPad through the MIDI router and program one of the NanoPad's rows to a different MIDI channel in order to trigger samples from the VST host. Here's more info: www.korgforums.com/forum/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=109067&sid=d8dfd740d8cb4ae6f7149eced1a34edb

It is a very specialized device, and it isn't cheap. That said, it can do absolutely amazing things, and I simply couldn't give it up. I think a lot depends on the type of music you're playing. Wind instruments and strings are phenomenal, and synth leads are also pretty amazing, especially since you can do everything with one hand (vibrato, pitch bend, aftertouch).

    • @ManueldelaTorre

I haven't had any major problems. I have never gigged with a Mac, so I can't compare, but I have never liked the idea of having a laptop onstage.
