    In the final step you need to run the bike a bit with the radiator cap open to burp the system so that the air bubbles escape. Thanks for the video.

    This is cool. Just flushed and changed my coolant on my CB1300SA using this video and it worked a treat. I even put my little yorkie terrier, rusty, inside the house which was just aswell as when I picked up the bucket with coolant from the motorbike the handle came off and and the whole lot splashed all over the garden patio. Took me longer to clean up than changing the coolant. Awsome.

    Propylene glycol doesn't transfer heat as well. A water wetter or surfactant is probably beneficial to help the water contact more surface area, but only to the point it resists foaming and such.

    I've been a biker for over 30 years, and do most of my routine maintenance, just thought I'd look to see if there was anything I missed, and I'm very impressed.
    One thing I'd like to add is that ethylene glycol and polypropylene glycol can be safely mixed, but never mix those with OAT coolant, nor use it in systems which are not totally sealed from the atmosphere.
    Really impressed, and the issues with pet safety are hardly ever touched on elsewhere.

    good video. I have a doubt: after the flush, the engine block has distilled water on it, so once you pour the coolant, it will mix with the distilled water itself, so you will never have 100% coolant in the system, right? the only way to achieve so would be doing the flushes with coolant instead of distilled water...

    • @CanyonChasers

    Thanks great vid. But did I mess up? 2013 R1...I drained the old coolant, flushed with distilled water with the drain plug off, then added 50/50 vinegar water and ran the bike with the system closed till fan came on. Then I rinsed by adding water with the drain plug out.. then closed the drain plug and added the new coolant. So I did not run the bike with pure distilled water, just rinsed with the drain plug out. Am I ok, or do I need to drain the new coolant and start again by running the bike with pure distilled water...then add more new coolant?? I have seen some videos that say run the bike with pure distilled water after the 50/50 step

    Does the “brand” or type of distilled water matter? If I search distilled water for coolant mixing specifically prices are crazy,almost as much as coolant alone .but if I just search Walmart distilled water it is just over a dollar.. I’d obviously like to save the $10-$20 but no at the cost of inferior/ damaging water..i use Walmart brand in my Xterra to no negative effect ,so I’m leaning towards “distilled water is distilled water”no matter what you pay for it …..I’ve considered making my own water via boiling with a bowl in middle of pot and lid on upside down( to drip into bowl) .but I’m so paranoid I’d be re distilling the water multiple times to be sure it was mineral free ,and still be worried hehe.

    • @CanyonChasers

      Most likely both of them. The one on the water pump is most likely the drain, but the other one will work like a bleed, and allow air into the system so it drains more completely.

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  9 років тому +1

      gunsntech411 How well the vinegar flushes out depends a lot on your bike. Most bike will do better if you put in water, run the bike for a moment or two, then dump it out. It may take a time or two before the vinegar smell is gone.

      Remove the drain hose from the top of the radiator and rinse it. If it's gross, you may need to run a bottle brush through it. If it's really, really nasty, you many need to remove it to clean it - and if its absolutely ghastly - just replace it. :)

    I recently bought a 2019 Yamaha mt09, but noticed the coolant level is low, the mileage is just under 2000 miles, Is it ok to just add coolant instead of draining and flushing?

    • @CanyonChasers
      @CanyonChasers  2 роки тому +2

      Absolutely! You could simply add a bit of distilled water, or get the coolant that Yamaha recommends for your bike. Remember the mixture in your radiator is typically 50/50. Coolant lubricates and prevents freezing. Water actually does the cooling. So it's okay if your system has a bit more of one or the other based on the temperature you bike lives in.

      @spokaneflyboy 9 років тому +1

      Mug Costanza To my knowledge, neither is overly great at heat transfer. However, ethylene glycol is a more potent anti-freeze. It's also highly toxic. Propylene glycol is what's commonly called safety freeze. It also doesn't have an MSDS that recommends taking four shots of hard alcohol and calling an ambulance if you accidentally ingest or inhale even a tiny amount.

      If the bike won't start when hot, that typically means you need a valve adjustment. Additionally, Triumph used to put really low grade coolant in their new bikes. I don't know if they use better stuff now, but I'd probably start by flushing/cleaning the system and installing fresh coolant.

    Help please. While blipping to get rid of the air bubbles (wasn't able to get rid of all of them) I noticed that as the bike got warmer the coolant was rising to the point where it almost spilled out had I not killed the engine. When the bike cools down the coolant starts going back down again.
    What I'm worried about is after I cap it off and while I'm riding, what if the coolant rises again with the cap on it and the pressure would build up and something disastrous can happen.
    Do help please.

    I just need to top mine up as it's on minimum and I don't want to flush the whole thing because of it, can I just add some distilled water?

      Yep. But you may want to test the coolant before winter to be sure it will survive winter (if you have winter where you live)

      @@CanyonChasers Thanks, I will keep an eye on it over winter and top it up after.
