Sledgehammer meaning is just what you said
This song is about sex, and the lyrics are loaded with phallic symbols. In addition to the word "sledgehammer," other references to the male member include the train, bumper cars, and the big dipper. The innuendo was typical of the blues music Gabriel drew from.
"Open up your fruit cage, and I will be your honey bee." Sexual metaphor at its finest!
The train part recalls the old 'dozens' slam--Yo mama like a railroad track: She been laid all over this country :)
@@mikemicrael5749 damn, all of these years I thought he said "fruit cakes". I'm almost 48 years old and still learning!
😂😂😂fruit cakes
@@johnharkness7114 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
This video was named the most played video of all time on MTV.
You guys should also check out Big Time by Peter Gabriel.
As you can see, he's sort of a visual artist as well as a musical artist. Check out "Shock the Monkey". Strange in a different way. Great groove.💙☮💙
Great song! Never quite understood all the meaning, but it's a fun song!
'In your eyes' from the secret world live tour is a real feel good song to watch. In fact the whole concert is so good I watch it about once a month and never tire of it!
Shaking the Tree from that same concert
YES!!! MOST DEFINITELY..WOWZER 👍
🤘🏻😎
Secret World Live is the best show I never went to!
It's Peter Gabriel, you get to understand the more you listen to him. He used to be in a band called Genesis with Phil Collins until he (Peter) left the band. He's actually very very cool! His music is awesome, he's done some good stuff with Kate Bush too. Absolute English treasure 🇬🇧
You need to check out Peter gabriel sock the monkey the video is just about as crazy as this one
He has won more awards than you can shake a stick out. He’s done amazing things.
A lot of talent in Genesis beyond Phil
@@TubinTexas Peter was the talent before Phil !
@@SirManfly Phil put that band into ground. Absolute shame.
Music videos were an art. Can you imagine how long it took to create it?
The golden days of MTV.
Did they do “Take On Me” or “Virtual Insanity” yet? Great videos, too!
The Chemical Brother’s “Let Forever Be” is really awesome too.
And obviously “Land of Confusion” by his old band, Genesis. My kid got obsessed with that video at age 5 (she’s 15 now). Imagine trying to explain global politics in the 1980’s to a 5yr-old. 😂 She still loves it-and understands it-today.
Yes, Sledgehammer is a song about male sexuality and also a tribute to MoTown. This was easily one of the best rock songs of the 1980s. Other Peter Gabriel gems are Biko, In Your Eyes, Solsbury Hill, Games Without Frontiers, Mercy Street, Red Rain, Shaking the Tree, When Your Falling, and Secret World. His music is a real deep vibe as you listen more. He is in the Rock and Roll HOF.
Great reaction! Peter Gabriel is one of the most remarkable people of our time. His contributions to culture and humanity go far beyond his music. You should read about his work with Nelson Mandela and other peace leaders and his long history of dedication to humanist causes such as Amnesty International. His catalog of music (solo and with Genesis from 1969-1975) and his influence on other artists is impressive. Peter is a clever lyricist and leading influencer during the 1980's by working with and promoting artists from around the world. Yet he has always had a sly sexual wit in his lyrics. If you like that aspect, listen to "Counting Out Time" from the epic concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway from his last album with Genesis. ua-cam.com/video/edBB5iGYYpk/v-deo.html Genesis and Peter Gabriel are deep rabbit holes if you like progressive rock.
Check out Gabriel's "In Your Eyes" from the Secret World Tour Live
The version from 1987 is so much more powerful
It was absolutely about sex. If you like the feel of this song, please react to "Big Time" and "Steam" for a similar feel. Peter Gabriel has a long list of very good songs. "In your Eyes" from the Secret World Live tour as someone has mentioned, is a must watch.
Another killer choice - this video took us all by surprise when it came out, and was a real landmark for the 80s. Peter was the original lead singer for Genesis, and in their earlier years they were an experimental progressive rock band - that uniqueness definitely carried over to his solo work. This album was huge, lots of great tracks, but this was definitely the biggest. Always fun hanging out with you guys, peace and love from Canada!☮
My whole Senior year of high school was about this album!
Back when MTV was still new, there were a handful of music videos that literally defined the genre. Thriller by MJ. Money For Nothing by Dire Straits. Take On Me by Aha. And this song. Really that's the "mount rushmore" of music videos I think.
When this came out it was a game changer. For me it has stood the test of time
This is the Gen X theme song.
Unmistakable voice. Nobody sounds like him. And - like David Bowie - he's as much an artistic talent as he is a music talent.
I have to highly recommend the live version of In Your Eyes. It's a spiritual experience. Also, did you know that Phil Collins replaced Peter as vocalist for Genesis? Yeah, that band is pretty iconic. I have to also recommend Genesis at Live Aid performing Abacab. Oh, and you're not tripping. 😅
Amazing performance!!! I use it as a vehicle when I meditate. It is very relaxing.
You guys should seriously listen/watch anything from The Secret World concert, particularly In Your Eyes.
Check out Big Time by Peter Gabriel. Cool!✌️
Love it! Sex, yep. Digging In the Dirt is one of my favs.
Several Peter Gabriel songs are about knockin' boots. Should check some live stuff from the Secret World concert video.
Check out his song: Steam. Great song and very interesting video.
Song is about sex 💯 %! His other songs are (Shock the Monkey) and (In your Eyes)
Yeah, the lyrics are a little suspect…and don’t forget Big Time and the great Kate Bush duet Don’t Give Up. Also from So.
I thought it was "In Your A$$" :)
Just so you know the meaning behind shock the money is as follows. Shock the Monkey" is “a love song" that examines how jealousy can release one's basic instincts; the monkey is not a literal monkey, but a metaphor for one's feelings ...
I highly recommend getting into some Genesis. I'd suggest checking out the song Mama, it's actually got Phil Collins on vocals as it's from after Gabriel left the band.
My favorite Genesis song ever!!!
"Big Time" next.
Welcome to the Peter Gabriel universe. Strange cat! Great music! Was original lead singer for Genisis
Fun fact: this video was nominated for Best video of the Year at the 1987 Soul Train Awards and Peter was the first and only white nominee in that category til Eminem in 2001 XD... it didn't win (Janet Jackson's video for "What have you done for me lately" did) but it won TONS of other awards with it (MTV, Brit Awards, etc.)
Peter Gabriel also won an Oscar for his song for Disney's Wall-E ... his daughter Melanie usually accompanies him on tour ....... the man is a genius .
I knew you would find this one interesting, lol. I would like to suggest another interesting song/video that I think you will like. Slave to the Rhythm by Grace Jones.
YES!!! This whole cd "SO" was fantastic, with this being my favorite Peter Gabriel song! Other GREATS are "BIG TIME" and "Shock The Monkey". Oh yes, it's about sex, lol.
Missy Elliott was heavily inspired to make videos just like Peter Gabriel. Such a crazy dope artist
You're spot on Recklezz! When the video first came out on MTV, it took me watching it quite a few times before the lyrics clicked.......and you did it the first listen!
He is saying he'll be whatever tool or vehicle needed to reach the destination. If it's beyond his imagination, he's open to being told and will have no problems communicating about it. Refreshing.
So he's submissive?!
@@annother3350 sure
@@annother3350 accommodating would come more readily to mind, but he is saying he'd be anything.
Peter Gabriel is so awesome! He’s a strange dude but so creative. He was a great frontman for Genesis before going solo. Check out Solsbury Hill, In Your Eyes, Shock the Monkey, Big Time, his cover of David Bowie’s Heroes was amazing.
Peter created the 1st "World Music" festival WOMAD in 1980, and it's still going strong. Genius level musician and performer.
Check out Harry Stiles" live cover on the Howard Stern show. It is one of the best cover's I have heard!
Big time producer Dan lanois helped produce this song for Peter....
Highly recommend Harry Styles' cover of this song on Howard Stern!!! Basically flawless cover
This was THE video on MTV back in the day. Everything you are seeing was new technology then. The only thing I didn't like about the video back then is that it took away from his great vocals. Talking Heads, Thomas Dolby, Devo....all those 'experimental' videos were amazing for the time!
One my favorite video!! ORIGINAL!! He is different, but talented. Thanks for reacting!❤❤ PS thanks for not ending video too soon. Yes it's about sex, and more!
The backing vocals were by P. P. Arnold, Coral "Chyna Whyne" Gordon, and Dee Lewis, who also did the backing for "Big Time". I recommend you check out P. P. Arnold’s ’First Cut Is The Deepest’. Class track.
Sex. You got it. 😂
This was voted #1 video of the 80s by MTV and it was tied for the #1 song of the 80s (when the poll was taken in 1989) with Sweet dreams are made of this from the Eurythemics.
Yes Sir, you got it. In the beginning of the video, it shows SPERM. The video is about sex. You have gotten so much better about not stopping the video to many times. And we watchers thank you for that. People don't have a lot of time. Blessings to your family.
Sperm is nasty!
I really enjoy this video when I was a kid; the colours, the imagination, the fun, the stop motion, I never noticed it was about sex relations until I grew up!! It is a very adult song and video but it had conquer all hearts at that time.
Peter Gabriel is a genius, that I have the joy to have seen him twice in Chile. The first time in the first Amnesty International Concert in the 90's, with David Bowie, Brian Adams, among others. I was a Kid. The second time, not many years ago in Chile with my wife. Great!!
I just want to recommend you the song "Big Time" which has a strange video like this one; but surely his best songs ever are Solsbury Hill and In your Eyes, from the Album "So".
Regards from Chile!! :-)
cool guy, song brought the big band music sound to modern pop..and the video..well...😉😁👏👍
Love your reactions, but please try to refrain from saying Know what I'm saying " so frequently.
I normally watch your channel/Reactions on my tv so i cant comment. So commenting to give you some things to react to.
1 in your room - depeche mode live devotional
2. Radiohead - Street spirit live glasto 2003
3. Rammstein - Deutschland official video
I would recommend “Big Time” It was actually the official Wrestlemania 22 Theme song !
I don´t think the lyrics are so important. I love American and British music all my life and I don´t understand most of it as English isn´t my first language. Sometimes when I´m really curious what is the song about, I´m disappointed. 😀 I love the groove, the sounds, the rhythms, melodies and I like how the English language fits to the music. So I love how the lyrics sound in the song but I don´t care about their meaning. But the video definitely distracts from the music. I mean in a good way. The song is a banger but he video is a masterpiece too. I love the bass line here played by Tony Levin.
The lyrics aren't anything complicated -- it's about passionate sex. And the visuals are funny surreal takes on the words being sung at each moment. Sex and humor really do go well together, if the sex is going to be any fun. Like a Reece's Peanut Butter Cup -- two great tastes that taste great together.
I loved this song growing up but I was a kid and the video disguised what its really about. So I started playing this song in my acoustic act a few years ago, it was the first time I really looked at the lyrics and was like, oh...this is about fucking lol
Morgan James covering Aerosmith dream on is another 🔥 song
he is saying he will be anything you want and need as long as you let him in it's a bit more than just sex!!!!. ; )
.my favorite song by him is "Games Without Frontiers"
If a guy calls himself a sledge hammer I'm runnin for the hills!
I always took the song as someone being a your sledgehammer removing obstacles out of your way in life lol
Best song about having a huge .... sledgehammer
I remember the night this premiered on MTV . Same expressions as you guys had . Love Peter Gabriel . “In Your eyes” should be your next choice from him. ⭐️
In Your Eyes epic
It's nice to see young people react to and show an appreciation for music from way back. Great job!
BIG TIME. check out Big Time...👍🏼
👋🏻♥️
The look on your face when the video ended was the exact feeling/expressions of myself and people around me when this first aired on MTV
Hahah Word..
1987 was a brilliant year to me 15 years old
Morgan James cover of sledgehammer is a must see
*Now y'all gotta react to "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel. BUT, it has to be, "Peter Gabriel - In Your Eyes (Secret World Live)", from his official page (Best quality) It's the finale from his 1993 concert (which explains a couple of the backup singers' clothes.😁).*
*And yes, it's the song from "The Boombox Scene" from the movie, "Say Anything". That would be a cool clip to react to and add to this reaction since it's such a huge pop-culture reference.* 📻
Este clipe na época foi um choque
he is a legend
I never knew if it was about sex but it did start out with the sperm and egg.
You need to take in his first solo single, "Solsbury Hill." The lyrics are deep, thoughtful, expressive and intensely personal -- written as he was leaving Genesis for his solo career.
I really enjoy y’all’s reactions!!! Really wish you would react to The Allman Bros. song Soulshine!!! I really think you would like it!!🙌🏻🙌🏻❤️❤️
And the best part is that when you paused it to talk about the underlying subject matter, you were right where the video shows a tiny little box with a strange trigger-looking thing on it, from which Peter's face pops out. Talk about symbolism
Try his music videos for 'Steam' and 'Big Time' coz they're good too. Then, if you feel like something closer to Pink Floyd try 'Firth of Fifth' from his time with Genesis.
Peter was a straight up dude!
Reckless, you’ve mentioned several times, I believe, about lifting up a boom box and playing music to a woman like in the movies, so why not listen to Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” from the movie “Say Anything” that originated that whole boom box scene?? 💁🏻♀️
One of the iconic scenes in movie history
@@TopGun86 💯‼️
several great videos from Peter Gabriel! but this one was the first and everyone was talking about it in the middle 80s! an epic video
Big Time, Steam, Shock the Monkey, Digging in the Dirt, Red Rain, Games Without Frontiers, BIKO!
PETER EFFING GABRIEL IS EFFING GREAT!
Muy buena tu reacción, me gustaría que reacciones a INDIO SOLARI JI JI JI de Argentina
ua-cam.com/video/tVvTDVswTxQ/v-deo.html
Gracias
It’s so funny to see you wonder about the lyrics! 🤣🤣🤣
Yes, they’re totally about sex, many different metaphors to refer to it, and it’s so brilliant!!!
It's about Sex!@!@!!LMAO!!!! You are right!!!!..Back then....they would not play music on the radio or airwaves if the lyrics were blatant about sex soooooo musicians and artist wrote music in codes using poetic lyrics to describe sex....or making out!!!! Yes!!! Hahahaha...it's about sex!!!
Ya know what I'm sayin? Ya know what I'm sayin? Ya know what I'm sayin? She looks like a hostage. Help the bombardier!
Stop Motion Animation.
24 fps FRAMES PER SECOND!
That's 24 individual Shutter movements per Second= 1000s of Frames. Incredibly intricate State of the Art Animation!

Another amazing videos:
Frank Zappa - Inca roads
Bjork - I miss you, Human behaviour, Bachelorette, Isobel.
Primus - Mr. Krinkle, John the fisherman, Tommy the cat.
Genesis - Land of confusion.
Ex Band Member of The Band Group Genesis . Along With Phil Collins This Song Is Offff The Hoooook 🎤🎶🎶🎶🎶😍
"Big Time", "Steam", & "Shock the Monkey" were all great songs by him. "Steam''s video is similarly strange. Oh....and you're right. It _IS_ about sex.
I've been watching your reaction vids all morning, binging, and this one busted me up laughing... your reaction right off the bat was PRICELESS! THANKS!
Peter Gabriel sing about sex?
My car's getting bigger
(Big time) My house, getting bigger
(Big time) My eyes, getting bigger
(Big time) And my mouth
(Big time) My belly's getting bigger
(Big time) And my bank account
(Big time) Look at my circumstance
(Big time) And the bulge in my big, big, big, big, big, big
Big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big, big
SHOCK THE MONKEY, SOLSBURY HILL, IN YOUR EYES, GAMES WITHOUT FRONTIERS, BIG TIME, STEAM, and more are worth reacting to - Recommend the original official music video as he made real good ones, many having an element of humor and whimsy. This one was done with all stop-motion photography. Sledgehammer has a double-meaning for the male organ.
- *"Shock The Monkey"*
- *"In Your Eyes"*
by Peter Gabriel
*MUST SEE!!!*
*Great reaction!*
💜💫✌🏼🎵
I like the fact that this music video was shot in stop motion, by the studio behind Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, and others.
A brilliant artist. Love his solo work as much as his work with Genesis. Saw 'Selling England by the Pound' tour, Nov. 8, '73 @ Toronto's famed Massey Hall. See also 'Big Time', same album, comparable vid. Also love 'Games Without Frontiers', ''Biko', 'Shock the Monkey', 'Solsbury Hill', 'Modern Love', 'Don't Give Up' with Kate Bush. Dive into Kate too. One-of-a-kind artist. 'Pull Out the Pin', 'The Dreaming', 'Them Heavy People', 'Cloudbusting' (official vid), 'Running Up That Hill'.
Was deeply disappointed to hear some years later that he was doing heroin at this time. Just as saddened as that George Harrison had a coke phase. Hmmm...thought you were better than that, hoped, anyway. Anyway, glad he came back from that sh!t, not everybody does. Some of my heroes did, some didn't.
It's DEFINITELY about Peter Gabriel "taking care" of his woman...if you know what he means
LOL, it was all about Sex.
From the Spermatic Intro through all the lyrics.
This is one of the Award Winning Videos that put Mtv on the Map.
Great artist. Check out “Big Time” and the underrated and INCREDIBLE “Steam”.
Can u imagine what Gabriel could do with TODAY'S video CGI tech? You gotta watch his "Secret World Tour" Show, '95 on you tube...the guy is one theatrical dude!! And you ain't wrong...I know this son'g's about sexin' up...people was bumpin' and grinding to it at every nightclub!!
Here's a Fact they don't tell you...
Living in 1987 and going, "Goddammit! This fucking song AGAIN!?"
Many more cool Peter Gabriel songs/videos..."Digging in the Dirt, Steam, Big Time, Shock the Monkey, and In Your Eyes" are a few.
Now,..now Recklez,...lets not jump to conclusions,..he might be talking about a construction job,..😉,..the thing with Peter,..quite a few songs,..and videos depict,..lean toward sexual innuendo,..and his videos wildly imaginative,..thank God for MTV,..came along at the right time,..I mean Midnight Special,..Ed Sullivan, American Bandstand,.yeah,..but don't think Peter's imagination could've been realized before the age of music videos,..Pink Floyd released a video on one night of Midnight Special,..they weren't there in person, so a video was played,..can't remember the song,..David Bowie did the same thing for Midnight Special,..for some groups at that time,..was the only time you saw them,.if they didn't do a live performance,..for the pre MTV era,.English groups, release some video,..to the states,..but there was a limited platform to play them,..of course MTV became the main hub,..Shock the Monkey was the first video I saw of Peter,..and the first song I heard from him as a solo artist,..and with his career going further,.he did more,..Sledgehammer,..was like at the top of videos being made,..and yes,.huh it was painstakingly made,..that whole stop motion,..Harryhausen style,..animation,..I think when asked,.Peter said how tideous it was to do that train track scene, where it goes around his head,..think it took days,..delicate, brilliant work,..but they brought it to life,..and it won best music video,..I was so waiting to see the look on your faces when the chickens started dancing,..lol,...it was an unmitigated trip when we saw this back.then,..and the thing about it,..every time it came on I watched,..cause lets face it,..its quite the groove,..isn't it though?,..I saw your head boppin,..Peter like Madonna,..Mary J.,..and a lot of others,..he will get you movin,..get you to your feet,..the videos be a trip,..but they also be a groove,..and you so need to dive into his video library,..Steam,..Digging in The Dirt,..Kiss The Frog(I so love that one),..Big Time, Secret World,..his songs also can have a gospel feel,..use of choirs,..Down To Earth(used in movie WALLE), love his music,..know it was hard for them at the time,..but glad he left Genesis, was good for him,.for the group, and for Phil Collins,..Godspeed, Peace ✌
You've GOTTA do Biko! (the official video with 6.2M views, not live)
In the 80’s this video had to be put together with stop-motion animation, a very lengthy, and painstaking process, no,computer animation like today...i dont know how long it took, but stuff like this took forever back then.....going frame by frame basically, starting and stopping the camera-- that little 10 seconds where he’s blue, for instance, and the white clouds go across his face in white make-up, I mean, he had to have the make-up re-done with the clouds inching across his face for however many frames that was....it’s incredible, and completely crazy--- but yeah, people who look deeply into stuff are baffled by this one....I know exactly what it’s about, but I’m sick of typing
