    I prefer to keep MSG and salts down in my dishes in general. Blood pressure. And like you said...natural flavours are great!

      @ChowWithLau  2 роки тому +2

      Absolutely! The research is a little thin on the ground with regards to msg’s actual effects in health apart from that it’s generally safe. I treat it like salt in that if I don’t think it’s necessary, I don’t use it and when I do it’s very sparingly 😊

    Need to see where in Australia I might buy this Saté sauce! I love the simplicity of this dish in terms of how quick you can make it, without what seems to be no compromise in flavour or crunch! Can’t wait to try it! Can you recommend a substitute if I can’t find the saté?

    • @ChowWithLau
      @ChowWithLau  2 роки тому

      Hi Joss, you should find it in Asian supermarkets and it’s widely available online and on Amazon here in the UK. Other than that I can’t think of a saté sauce that comes close. I hope you can find some 😊🙏🙏🙏

      I've used both the Jimmy's sauce and the Lee kum kee one and I much prefer the latter so I wouldn't worry about it too much.

      It’s pretty easy to find, some Woolworths and Coles have it. Harris Farm has it and obviously any Asian grocer. Jimmy’s sate is yum! Definitely recommend it

    Just a gorgeous dish Michael! Love a fantastic, flavourful, quick dish like this. Brilliantly done. I actually do cook with a bit of MSG, though only occasionally. I find it just another nice flavour additive to have at the ready, but I get what you mean. Thanks for this excellent recipe!

      Thanks Susan! I’m absolutely addicted to this dish, the combination of sweet and spicy is my greatest weakness 😅
      I’ve done some research on MSG and it seems that it’s pretty safe. I might do a video on the subject soon. No doubt it turbocharges flavour but I’m undecided whether I want to make it a regular ingredient in my recipes

      @@ChowWithLau As I'd read it, the whole controversy boils down to some article written by a guy ages ago in New York, who basically blamed feeling sick after eating Chinese food on their use of MSG... and not, say, him eating too much. No scientific foundation. Nothing to it but silliness... but it's been weirdly sustained for ages as a "truth." And what does that tell you, right?

    • @ChowWithLau
      @ChowWithLau  2 роки тому +1

      @@RhubarbAndCod Apparently so! The actual scientific studies I've read say that it is safe to consume. If anyone asks me I'd say the same, however I don't want to get embroiled in arguments so my stance is that msg is a great flavour enhancer but is not essential for food to taste amazing.

    MSG is often the missing key when trying to make Chinese and Vietnamese food at home.
    And its absolutely fantastic on fried eggs. Sprinkle a tiny pinch on eggs while they're cooking. Delicious.
    Another key is Knor stock powder.
    I tried and tried to make chicken stock from scratch that tasted like takeout soup.
    Knor is the flavour! I make stock with no salt then salt to taste using knor. No need to add MSG. Knor tastes like its at least 30% MSG.
    I lived in Vietnam for 5 years.
    MSG was out of control over there.
    Ordering a bowl of pho, the soup has MSG in it. A spoonful of MSG goes into the serving bowl first thing. And rheres MSG on the table so you can help yourself.

      I wouldn’t disagree with anything you’ve just written - it definitely is a great ingredient when it comes to flavour.
      However, it’s also quite a divisive topic because if it’s shady reputation. I made a video to address this MSG misinformation if you’d like to check it out? It’s actually really interesting when you look into it. I tend not to use it in my recipes because I think when you’re cooking from scratch it’s not quite as important if you use great produce. And it just gets people riled up 😆😅
      But yes, definitely one to have in your cupboard if you understand how to use it.
      I want to do a food tour of Asia and Vietnam is definitely on my list.
      Thanks again for your contribution. Much appreciated 🫶

    Thanks for the video. I don’t use pastes when making sataybsauce, I or my wife make it from scratch, far better than the store bought varieties and lasts a lot longer as we make a huge batch of it. Nice to see you coming back in to videos again. Take care, :)

      On every other sauce/paste I would agree, but I’m addicted to this Jimmy’s saté sauce. I can’t get close to it when trying to make it from scratch 🤷🏻‍♂️

      @@ChowWithLau excellent, my favourite dish at my local takeaway is satay sauce however I can never find a recipe to match it as it’s a garlicky savoury satay they do and all the recipes I have come across online are sweet and or peanutty so hopefully this is the one I’m looking for

    You can totally find MSG in any supermarket. It won't be the traditional white crystals/powder in a bag, but there are products that aren't labelled as MSG, but the only ingredient is MSG. And even if they don't have that you can buy MSG buy through stuff like knorr chicken powder.

    • @ChowWithLau
      @ChowWithLau  2 роки тому +1

      Yes, I know that many, many foods and ingredients use or contain msg. As far as I know you can’t get it as a naked ingredient in the main U.K. supermarkets and that was what I was trying to say. And then only because I don’t want people to spend hours looking for an ingredient they can’t find in the way I’ve described.
      I appreciate your input 😊🙏🙏🙏

    Why don’t you cut your chicken on the wooden board

    • @ChowWithLau
      @ChowWithLau  2 роки тому +3

      Thanks for your question. It’s just to avoid cross contamination. I use the white, polythene chopping board for raw meat as it’s easier to clean thoroughly after use.
      Hope that answers your question.
