I felt like Portia's costuming made complete sense given that she lives in LA and is in her 20's. It gives the vibe that much of what she wears is thrifted which is extremely popular amongst the younger crowd now. And the mismatched prints and colors mirror the nonchalant vibe she tries to give off.
One thing I noted is that Mia's white feather dress portray her as a swan. In the oppening, there's a scene of a fresco where a woman has a sexual relationship with a swan. Now I realise it's a clear node to Valentina's (the woman) and Mia's (the swan) relationship.
It's also related to Greek/roman mythology I think because Zeus used to appear to human women or nymphs as all sorts of animals (a bull to Europe, and a Swan but I don't remember the nymph anymore). So I think it's also mirroring the power dynamics of a god and a "lesser" being promising themselves some kind of positive outcome of sleeping with the god. Also further playing into the themes of infidelity of this season!
Jack's a working class Essex lad, so I had to laugh at how Portia and Tanya (being Americans) didn't pick up on it being strange that he'd have a posh uncle.
Not necessarily!! I’m from Essex and a lot of people here have that accent but are actually stinking rich, and could easily have old money relatives. Often people (especially men of Jack’s age) will play up that accent to try and disconnect themselves from their family’s wealth and poshness.
Jack's clothing makes me think of the song "never fight a man with a perm" by The Idles: " you are a topshop tyrant/even your haircut's violent/you look like you're from Love Island".
I actually LOVE Portia’s style 😂 I mean I am a 20 something female, but yea I loved it. I thought Portia’s wardrobe made her seem very cool, but laid back. Her outfits were fun. She wasn’t sure of herself in real life but one thing she was sure of and confident in was her wardrobe. At least that’s how I viewed
Yeah Portia's outfits were great and they all made sense to me. Pairing that tube top with jeans would be lame af! Im glad she was wearing affordable clothes, it's always suspect when someone who isnt rich is wearing a ton of designer.
Another wonderfully made show. The story is outrageous but exciting. The mix of characters are all so unique and fun to watch. I love all their costumes but never thought about them as deeply as you’ve explained. But it all makes sense. Their clothes fit the characters so perfectly. I am a 42 year old woman, but I absolutely love Portia’s outfits. My young nephew has a girlfriend who is 19 and she dresses so similarly; so it just made so much sense to me that young Portia would dress like that. That’s the kind of stuff young kids wear nowadays. It may not resonate for the older crowd, but I thought it matched the younger generation so well. So much thrift store meets current trend stuff. I personally find it really new and funky in a weird abstract way. Thanks for your videos. I adore how you dissect each character!
I’m surprised so many people said that Portia’s wardrobe is reflective of thrifting being a trend when I saw it as fast fashion pieces. Combined with her fried hair with roots showing, I feel like her style shows someone who wants to follow trends and tries to, but doesn’t quite know how to put everything together.
Thank you so much for this well done video. I didn't mind Portia's wardrobe, it fit her character, the way people were freaking out about it, you would think the world was ending or something (lol). IMO Aubrey Plaza's wardrobe was the best, thank you for your explanation of that. Can't wait for your take of the 3rd season, (it's supposed to take place in Bali)❤
Thank you so much Green Godess. I am going to gp back and do season 1 before we have S3. I was hoping in was going to be in Japan but Bali sounds lovely.
Thank you so much for the shout out. We know exactly where every scene is shot! Really enjoyed the details in the costume descriptions and your opinions.
Love that you covered the costuming in this show! What a treat. I always thought Portia’s costuming was meant to mirror Tanya’s in a way. They were both pretty over the top, but generationally very different. If I could steal one character’s wardrobe, it would definitely be Daphne’s! ❤
Def Daphne and Harper’s style for me, loved each of their outfits! Very Italian coast chic that fits the laid back luxurious location! What a treat for the eyes! 😍
I dont know if you saw it but i had commented that i would love to see an analysis from you of the costumes of that show ! So glad you did it ! Im gonna watch this with pleasure ! 😁
@@Costume_CO well anyway i really wanted to see you analysis of the second season, i feel its the one that’s really the most interesting from the fashion point of view ! 😍
It's funny how Cameron wears an outfit with a predatory mammal on it, and the symbolism there is too obvious to be worth mentioning, but clothing made for hunters (who are actual predators) only has pictures of herbivores (deer, elk, etc.) even though humans hunt both carnivores and herbivores.
What is a season one costume analysis ever created? I haven’t been able to find it on UA-cam and this was thoroughly entertaining. I would love to hear your perspective on season one fashion.
Love this video !!! So thorough as usual. Every costume on this show was so spot on it’s hard to pick a favourite but as a Gen z who just finished college I know so many guys who dress exactly like Albie 😂 special mention for Harper’s bathrobe. I can see the white lotus Sicilian vibes influencing fashion for summer 2023, especially Cam’s printed shirts. All love and support for your channel I shared this with all my friends who watched the show ❤❤ Now where would you like the show to go for season 3?
Hi Andi, thank you so much for commenting. I saw an interview with Aubrey Plaza talking about her bathrobe, haha! So many clothes and I couldn't cram them all in without making it a documentary. Thanks again for your lovely comments.
@Costume_CO - HELLO 😁 You have the comments function turned off on the Shining movie costumes. I wanted to thank you for an amazing and detailed video! So, I came here. In that video, youe detailed even down to the dresses and maryjane shoes the actress twins Lisa and Louise Burns wore! Amazing! Really loved the video and quite informative! WOW! I happen to be a HUGE fan of Kubrick's version of the movie. Thanks a million! I subscribed too. 😁👻👻👻👻👻
I actually loved those two pieces together 😂 the matching bandeau and jeans had a nice continuity and I loved the royal blue color ❤ I thought this was where she looked her best honestly.
Loved loved loved Valentina's style. She wore smart yet colorful outfits, very well fitted and suited to her figure. She was clean yet never overly adorned and her accessories were classy and never ostentatious. That said I think all the women dressed very well with outfits that suited their personalities and figures (for the most part) --- BUT, Portia at times was a train wreck despite having a few nice yet inexpensive dresses. I was just appalled though when she paired them with sneakers (she's way too short to even try and pull that off, making her look squat, frumpy and with no sense of style) ... and that printed bikini top flattened what little breasts she had, it just didn't work with her figure - contrast her with Daphne.
@@Costume_CO lol, well what do I know, I'm 60+ American male who did spend a good amount of time in Italy ... I had nothing against her wardrobe per se, just how some of it worked with her body. This isn't meant as a knock-on Gen Z fashion in general. Another example were her longer skirts (the wrap arounds), they could work on Daphne who is long and slender but on Portia it just accentuates her lack of height and thick calves. Again, in contrast, Daphne could pull off the horizontal stripes (the 2-piece outfit she wore in Noto) but Portia couldn't. So yeah, nothing against Portia's inability to purchase expensive clothes, or her more casual attitude towards clothing in general, but she was confused stylistically (guess it mimics her general confusion) and doesn't play to her strengths.
You don't always have a sense of your own style and what looks best on you in your 20s. Please read the comments from young women who are of that age and how they feel her look was spot on for someone who is from LA and likes to thrift and mix and match. Daphne and Portia are two women who are in very different stages/ages of life. It's silly to compare them
Yes, she had NO IDEA how to mix and match anything. Totally clueless style-wise. If that's LA mix and match 20 something year olds, then they have a lot to learn from their counterparts in other areas of the country.@@pollymorphic500

I actually thing Portia’s style was spot on for what the stylist was going for-- gen z maximalism, thrift finds, pattern mixing
@@kirrisolly-slade1313 I agree! Very spot on for her age

I think one of my favorite outfits of Portia’s was the losing my favorite game night out outfit!
Am I the only person who likes Portia’s style? (Besides that last outfit at the airport yikes)

Two pieces worn together for Portia? Oh come on...bit conservative maybe in style. Go OTT once in a while, it'll not hurt
