The addition of the percussion is an inspired touch. Augustin even makes sense of the third movement. A very satisfying concert piece.

25:29 is one of the most intense and breathtaking climaxes in classical music, dark and apocalyptic!

Genius arrangement. Sounds like Shostakovich wrote it. Great playing by all.

A scintillating arrangement and a gripping performance, ideally suited to the acoustics of Jordan Hall, which makes each pizzicato sparkle and gives fantastic resonance to the chorded and double-stop passages. It is great to see the amazing talent of Augustin Hadelich moving in the direction of the kind of more exploratory material Gidon Kremer and his Kremerata Baltica have exposited so well in recent years. Outstanding!

This is an incredible performance. The original Shostakovich violin sonata is one of my absolute favorite pieces, but it is very hard to get right. Despite its unusual arrangement, this is possibly the most perfect realization of the piece I've heard so far.

Yes, it's particularly daring to include percussion - I imagine there could be those who'd criticise by saying Shostakovich would have included percussion in the original if he'd conceived the piece with such sounds in mind. To me they enhance the piece immeasurably, as does the whole arrangement. I now think of it as a sonata for violin, strings and percussion...

@@grahamexeter3399 Shostakovich treated piano as partly percussive instrument, so the original doesn't need any extra percussion. And this arrangement misses quite a lot of rhythmic drive

My first exposure to this work. Terrific ensemble playing, and of course fantastic control and virtuosity from Augustin Hadelich. The orchestration by Michail Zinman is so effective that I find it hard to imagine that I would enjoy the Violin and Piano original as much.

I imagine that it depends on who is playing the piece. If Augistin is paired with that one special and perfect musical partner the original version may indeed be even better.

This is every bit as good as the concertos. Maybe even more interesting. With a string orchestra is so much better than with Piano.

Brilliant, but I don't get it, why there is a credit to other violinist Igor Karsko, and artist they says Sebastian Bohren, but it's clearly not those two. Is it a copyright nonsense again?

I think UA-cam/Google tries to analyze and guess based on the audio. Thank you for listening!

Wonderful interpretation and arrangement. Could somebody tell me where to buy the music of this Arrangement? Or to tell me what is the name of the Edition House.
    Thank you very much!

This was _written for_ violin and piano by Shostakovich, then _orchestrated_ by Michael Zinman.
