Yeah but he sued people for copying his work when that work is pretty different than the source he thinks it was taken from. Incredible hulk for example.

@@amsbeats841 I can’t remember the specifics of the Hulk case, but The Terminator one is blatant in the extreme.
He was also right to oppose sharing texts online without permission.
He further in the ‘70s took a major TV network to court for stealing his and Ben Bova’s script and won at great monetary cost to himself.

Harlan Ellison knew what he was saying. Ellison knew all about computers, he wasn't a close minded idiot. Ellison understood better than most the great helpful things the internet could provide humanity, but what he also understood was that individual people did not have the self-control and responsibility to regulate the internet's powerful trappings.

Bit ironic Doctorow is calling Harlan Ellison a "mixed bag" as a writer. A person yes, but I have read both and Doctorow doesn't hold a candle to Ellison as a stylist. He also seems to be utterly unaware that most of the "worst" things Ellison has said were meant sardonically.

i feel so out of place being here being 18 and all
its like when you're a child and you can't understand taxes yet and your parents are talking about them
      but the internet did nothing
it its own creators that made it into a place of entertainment and stupidity
it came from a platform where you can share just about anything to a place of chasing trends to be relevant
its kinda like alcohol in a sense
you try it once or thrice and you can't just help yourself but to taste that again
that escape from reality and responsibility
      sadness, anger and sorrow

First off,You should have taken his advice. The internet is a waste of time with Tik Tok and social media streaming television. The Glass Teat has surely evolved. second off, I have kept up with Harlan's website and everything about him as an ultrafan for years before he died. And not once did I see a blog post or a public statement, a youtube video or even hear any gossip that he ever mentioned you or anything you have ever said and done. And i ask this question: who are you? and why do you matter? And as far as terrible things that Harlan did, yeah that's called living life. And its also fighting back bullies who will always exist in our lives. Harlan is the goat, and in my informed opinion, this clown who is running his mouth about a man who's been dead for 5 years, hasn't the right to even lace Harlan's boots, let alone comment on the man and his work! third and finally, it is bad juju to disrespect the dead. It's even worse when you're a writer who disrespects the goat. My name is Jacob Pittman, and you Dr. can kindly suck my balls, you bugfuc mother.

Doctorow is one of the most prominent figures involved in movements such as the Open Source/Free Software movement and the Collective Commons movement. He is a figure of international importance, and has worked across a number of different countries to help shape systems that operate outside the bounds of traditional Intellectual Property law. He is also a highly successful author.

I will be very well known in just a few short years once my novels are released.
No disrespect towards you intended btw if you like him.
But i really don't like this guy. He either worded his response wrong, or simply did not consider the nuance of Harlan's words on this matter. the internet on a technological level is an amazing accomplishment, that has devolved into the very same glass teat that was once television, sucking the life from us.

@@circeciernova1712 lol that’s not even big deal, he is just a guy of power saying things that smart people know aren’t facts at all, just opinions, and these things are of his interest, as you said, he is in the technology/ai and software development industry so obviously he won’t agree with something that is against his world, you guys need to stop putting some humans on the top when they hadn’t even did anything of enormous value, and yeah this is abstract but it’s pretty obvious he isn’t Donald Trump. Alas you call him a great writer?
