    On this episode of The Fab Forums I highlight the Dimple Dies set.
    Welcome to The Fab Forums. My name is Kyle Voss and I produce Custom Motorsports Fabrication content of all forms for you. Carbon Fiber, TIG Welding, Metal Shaping, Hot Rods, Muscle Cars, Custom Choppers, and everything in between. I work hard to bring you new content on a weekly basis.
    Here are some of the builds you can find on this channel.
    I have built several Chevy trucks on this channel. The first was my 1964 C10 named Crown Spoyal and the most recent C10 truck project was the 1969 I currently have named the Black Pearl.
    I am also finishing up a custom twin turbo Ford Mustang build I call the Gray Goose. It’s a 400 cubic inch Windsor style engine with twin 70mm turbos. I am hoping to make around the 1000 horse power mark to the tires on this particular build.
    Last but not least is the one off custom hot rod build called the Bibbster. This is what I call a modern day hot rod. It’s made from an old Ford Mustang foxbody, but made to look like an old school open wheeled hot rod.
    I also feature other fabricators and shops like Cutworm Specialties hand formed aluminum wide body kit for a BMW e46. Jeb Greenstone has also built a twin turbo, coyote powered model A style hot rod from scratch, and is currently building a Toyota TE72 wagon drift car powered by a 1UZ Lexus v8. Jeb’s custom fabrication skills are fun to watch and always make for good videos.
    Check out my playlist to see some or all of these builds.

    Am I the only one that notices that no matter how many likes there are for any one of these videos there is always generally 10-25 dislikes. Seems to be a small group of envious haters with nothing better to do than to make it their mission to dislike every video on the fab forums. Anyway thanks Kyle for your effort and time to produce these videos. Regardless of each others differences in style or preference. Keep up the awesome work.

    Nice as soon as my spindle get back from having the taper reground I am making me a set of those on my mill. I have a ton of scrap steel and this would be good to test the spindle on once its re-installed. Though I'm not going to make a full set. Just one pair. If I need a full set I will just buy one.

    The quality of these videos is always great. I remember looking at dimple dies a while ago but most were only rated to 12 or 14 ga I think, where 1/8 is more like 10 ga. If they work, they work though. Just moved to michigan myself though, so have to find a workspace!

    Kyle, I got a couple of things. First, that set of Dimple Dies for around $200 sounds like a good deal. Second, now that I'm spending all my money on more cool tools I cant afford to spend a lot on a really big tool box! But I see at Harbor Freight you can purchase there 72" for around $999. On Sale Now! I know what people will say, but I believe these boxes should last my life time with proper care and handling. Have you ever thought of doing a review on Tool Boxes? You know you have to put all those Cool Tools in a Cool box! Lol Last of all I also think "The Bibster Foxrod" sounds good! Once again thank you for you time and videos.

    Noticed you’ve gotten away from the Eastwood stuff, I know they have a plethora of stuff and enjoyed your choices of their products. I’d hope that maybe they could help you out in the future and that maybe your relationship with them is still good. Great videos as always and like always I enjoy your perspective on what to use to reach your goals. Maybe @irontrapgarage and you can get together in the future on the bibster, Matt has a very good eye with where you’re headed. Keep the content rolling sir and hope you feel better.

    Hey thx for the cool videos. Can’t wait to see the hot rod build come together. I like the cantilevered suspension ride height idea but I would probably make a lockout for going down the road so it cannot drop if a line or something was to fail. I know it’s probably highly unlikely but it would put my mind at ease. Also if the pump should fail, no doubt at the most inconvenient time lol, it could still be raised up with a jack to ride height and locked. Just my two cents worth lol. Thx again.

    is the 2" die going to be a 2" ID hole after flaring or larger because of the flare ? Just thing that if it expands it larger i might be able use it to make a custom gauge pod with a raised look

    Have you done a bunch of flairs/beads, with eastwoods, on a panel yet? I did on a 24x48, 20 ga, and it warped a bunch. What's the best method to pre stretch the metal throughout the panel that size? Drill the pilot hole first or punch the hole before pre stretching?

    Fools, I have that tool. Made myself a set on my 40 inch lathe. If you value your time I'd buy a set for the prices shown. It would be nice though if they'd make the depth of the 45 degree roll the same on all the dies shown. You can keep the depth the same on various sized dimples by the depth you press the die in but in thinner guage steel or aluminum you'll want to bottom the die to remove some of the warp you get from the procedure of dimpling.

    Never seen a punch and bead before. Do you know which is stronger the bead or the dimple?

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering 6 років тому +1

      Theoretically a pressed bead should be stronger. Think about the shape of the bead, verses and open edged dimple (in a like for like situations) with a bead you have two faces that have extended into the third dimension, whereas you only have one with a dimple. Problem is you probably won't be able to get a bead as deep as a dimple because you have to stretch the metal further and it would require infinitely more pressing force.

  • @johngray4107
    @johngray4107 6 років тому

    I think I'm going to go with the set from SWAG OFFROAD they are a bit more but they have a smaller hole so you can use them after the fact. Say you have something already built and can't get it in your press.

    • @Thefabforums
      @Thefabforums  6 років тому

      +John Gray how do you plan to press it....a bolt won't do it when dimple dieing plate steel. If you just plan to do sheet metal I would go with some punch and flare units.

    • @johngray4107
      @johngray4107 6 років тому

      I agree, I think material thickness and hole diameter should have a lot to do with it. Still can be used in the press same as the other dies to. Just thought it would be another option.

      Used Lathe for 4-$500 plus cost of tool steel and then for some, learning how to use a lathe properly..... That is already more than what you said a decent set costs. I don't see how you are making them for cheaper?

    • @pprotory
      @pprotory 6 років тому

      You can make these on a mill too but yeah any good mill is going to cost you 50k plus the same goes with any lathe. Now you can get manual ones for less or go straight up china garbage for way less (think grizzly or tormach) but either way you are still going to spend way more money than its worth. Although if you already have a mill or lathe and happen to have enough left over steel from a customer job then might as well just cut em. the 5 minutes it takes to mill out a set is faster than any trip to the store :D
